Blowing off intercooler pipes [Merged 7-8] ic intake

The stock lower intercooler pipe pops off my Big T28 Killer when it starts to boost. Why? Do I need a hard pipe? Well i'm leaking coolant and have to go tighten this bolt down. Please give some advice Im stumped.

Two customers of my workplace have Diesel pulling tractors, and both use exhaust V-bands to connect their charge piping- I plan on doing the same for my AWD project. The V-bands are 100% leakproof, and allow the piping to be quickly disassembled....you never have to "slide" the piping inside a coupler, so it works well in tight spaces.

The v-band flanges are available in steel or aluminum, and are welded directly to your piping. This is the only way to rigidly join stainless piping to an aluminum intercooler!

It's still recommended that you have a rubber coupler or two on the system so it's not too rigid. If the piping cannot flex, you risk cracking or splitting the piping.

hairspray and look through the forums i just saw a thread about makeing your own bead makeing tool out of vice grips you need a bead and i would call up extreme psi for some top shelf couplers also

Use a rubber band, a popsicle stick, toothpick and a midget....just kidding trust me the JB weld crap is strong!

weld 2-4 bubbles around the outside of the end of pipe.

I wrapped the male end of the output of my sidemount that goes into the plastic uicp with soft electrical tape to make it snug, put a thin layer of silicone sealer (forget what it's called) around it, and clamped it down with a t-clamp. It hasn't leaked since.

No gasket.

Are you sure you don't have a faulty flange or something? By design, the v-bands shouldn't leak one bit....the tighter they are, the better they seal.

now i read all the fixes for the ic piping to stay on, i plan on doing jb weld and hairspray, but i have a question, after all is said and done if i put pvc glue on the ends of the piping and slip it on the couplers....... will it eat threw? or do you think it will be a permenent fix. that stuff is strong!!!because this pipe fixing is bullsh!t is getting old!

If your pipes are really smooth, they will keep blowing off; you just need to grind around them so the hose has something to grab to.

Beaded Ends on I/C Pipes

You can also just tag the end of the pipe and flare it up in 4 or 5 sections. Always works for me.

Flared ends are very nice to have and do help, but what you really need 3-4 ply silicone couplers with t-clamps. You should NEVER have to jb weld pipes because they blow out of their couplers. Extreme PSI has everything you need for keeping pipes from blowing off in the 'do it yourself' section I believe, or they have their own seperate couplers and clamps section. Do that and you'll never worry about it again.

^^Agreed. While rolled edges are optimal, they are not necessary. With the combination of hairspray, silicon couplers, and t-bolt clamps, you should be fine.

I run 15psi to 17psi daily with just silicone couplers and t-clamps. No flares or beads.

I think you should note what KIND of hairspray to use. Oil Sheen is hairspray and that aint going to hold poop.

I sanded the ends of my piping slightly with 600 grit sand paper where the tbolt clamps go. pressure tested up to 40psi multiple times and held without slipping.

Hairspray is a horrible idea. If you really want them to stick use wd-40.... no seriously. I have ridden bmx for years and it's what I use to stick my grips to my handlebars.

edit: this coming from someone that used to use hairspray on grips... until i learned that wd40 works a million times better.

You don't need silicone couplers. As long as they aren't blowing off or blowing up, whatever you're running is fine. Just make a bead. I've had silicone couplers with T bolt clamps blow off too. Every reputable intercooler kit comes with beaded pipe ends along with silicone couplers and T bolt clamps. None of them come with hairspray. Save the hairspray for these guys

Just flare the ends slightly with a adjustable wrench it wont blowout even with regular clamps.Its a little harder to put the couplers back on if do it too much but it will hold and its your cheapest option.

Just make one of these dude. Ball sweat and hairspray wont help hold the pipes LIKE A BEAD WILL.

stupid answer but like my dumb friend did was use t bolt clamps which were over sized for the actual pipe being used. So even though the nuts were tighten down all the way the clamp was still not tight. He used regular worm gear clamps and no problems after that.

I used straight gate hose it works wonderfuld, and looks almost better than silicone couplers.(they sell it by the foot so you can make whatever length you need) The problem I had was that the silicone couplers were not long enough so, you couldnt get a good clamp.
