So i recently bought a 96 GST block.
It's all apart and i wanted to start rebuilding.
Got me some ACL main bearings but for some reason they won't fit. Checked te site and box both said it should work for my engine.I thought the bearing with washer attached (dont know the name) sould go in the middle. In the block itself it fits perfectly. But on the girdle it doesn't. It only fits at the tranny side. Any idea where to place it?

Thankkss

Are you sure that's a 1996 block and not a 97+ with the split thrust bearing design? The middle bearing is called a thrust bearing. On 1989-1997 they are single piece like in your photo, from '97 upwards they are 3 piece design.

Can you show us the ACL box and part number? Also I'm wondering if someone gave you the wrong girdle for that block... On my 1996 GS block I put ACL AluGlide bearings (single piece thrust) and they perfectly fit.

Thank u guys so much, i was struggling to find it on intetnet. Here is a picture of box.

On the site i ordere i found

Bearings 5M1219HX

is this the right one ?

Exactly!. do i need 2 pairs of trustwashers then ?

And are those block better or worse in general?

If you want the standard size + .001" extra oil clearance, then yes that's the one. But if you want the standard size without .001" extra oil clearance, it would be 5M1219H (Without "X").
do i need 2 pairs of trustwashers then ?
No, you don't need 2 pairs. You need 1 pair. If you want ACL, the part number is 1T1219. Mitsubishi part number is MD351820.

So there will be no thrust washer on the girdle ?
And will 1.2mm 1.2mm 2.0mm Piston rings work?

I think you are right Paul. I always thought it was 98 and 99. My son's 97 Talon wasn't a split thrust but my 98 was. IDK if either were the original engine
although.

EDIT: I just checked Rockauto for Thrust Bearings. It doesn't show up until the 1998 model year according to their listing
ExtremePSI, however, lists that thrust washer for 97-99. :hmm:

The split trust block is a revised version block that appeared in the mid 97. There is a reason why in the mid 97. I don't know how was in the States though.
It was all about EVO4. EVO4 came in 96, and until the early EVO4 or the early 97 cars, all 4G63 cars (both the early and late 4g63) came with one piece style main bearing. But somehow a lot of new 96 EVO4 owners got crankwalk, even it had always existed on the early 4g63. And they complained to Mitsubishi. It almost went a recall in Japan. Then Mitsubishi made the split trust block as revised version. Mitsubishi restarted to sell EVO4 in 97 with the revised block. And after that all cars came with the revised block from factory. And also in the same time Mitsubishi tried to replace the old style block with the revised block when people ordered an engine assy or a block from Mitsubishi, even for our 4g63 (the early 4g63).

will 1.2mm 1.2mm 2.0mm Piston rings work?
For stock pistons, no, it won't work. For what pistons?

Just for the stock ones ( 63DTF1).
wich ones should i use?
Live in the netherlands so supply is bit limited i think

its a turbo blok. Dont know if that matters?
But are 1.2 mm 1.2 mm 2.0mm rings okay?
1.2mm
1.5mm
2.8mm
Are all stock size and you can find them HERE made by NPR. I have a 6 bolt with NPR pistons and rings in it, on a stand, ready when needed.

Great!
Thanks i will using be those sizes. Anybody know a shop in Europe that sell those. Cause if I order in us i pay 25% extra.

I personally have only seen 98/99 aka W or X vin blocks as split thrusts. But you could possibly run into a 97 car with a split thrust maybe. I always look at vin on the block to tell what it is and not look at year of the car. Way to many times i have seen XX year have a different year motor. Heck my 97 non split thrust has a built 98 split thrust in it right now.

I'm not sure what your plans for the engine are but those are pretty specific "HX" bearings. The "H" means they're race bearings which are harder material than regular bearings and any debris in the engine will grind between the crank and bearing instead of just getting embedded in the bearing. The "X" means they have extra oil clearance. You may know all this and be building for a specific performance application but just wanted to make sure you know what you're getting. Lots of guys throw "race" bearings in a street car and think its an upgrade but in reality it's just putting unnecessary wear on the crankshaft. Not trying to bash you for buying the bearings at all just want people to be informed on what they are getting.

To be 100% sure what type of main bearings your 7 bolt block has, the only way would be to open the engine and physically check inside unless you are the original owner and know all its history. Even to check the vin or engine number won't make it 100% sure, it's because even the cars that came with the old style block like early evo, rvr, 1g 7 bolt etc, those could have been modified to use split thrust washers by someone before or maybe the original owner or Mitsubishi dealer have replaced the block with the revised block.
