Does anyone have any instructions (step by step for DUMMIES) on how to remove the air condition system?

-I never use it anyways. (If it's hot, I'm scared I'll overheat car, if it's cold, I wouldn't dare LOL
-What benifits will I get for removing it?

Thanx,
DeathBeast

You could also remove all the components in the evaporator housing under the dash and just plug the holes in there. You could remove the A/C control module that is mounted on top of the evaporator housing too.

I know its not a good idea, and MAY even be illegal, but the way I see it is the engines not completely in the car so theres no driving to the nearest dealer to have it serviced and the systems has been empty for years now so how bad could it be?

Can someone give me a run down on what "my friend needs to do" to get that 40 pound piece of crap out of the way? No one will be held liable; I promise!!

Thanks

If the system is already empty, there is no problem removing it. If it still has freon(r12), call a local shop and they will probably come to your house with a recovery system and get it for free. I have ran across shops that are willing to do it because they can resell it for$80+ per pound.

In "theory" you could just loosen one of the hard lines and let it out. Best bet is a shop do it as it IS illegal.
Mike

Remember, only in theory. :p

It IS illegal to release freon into the atmosphere no matter who deaos it. Mine was dead for years when I took it all out. What I did was cracked one of the hard lines a bit and listened for any leakage before I took it out completely(cover your eyes, nose, and mouth just in case). Mine had nothing left in it so I just removed the system without any further issue.

Long as it empty there is no problem, and like others have said its illegal for anyone to release freon into the atmosphere, due to strict pollution laws created back in the 70s and 80s due to too many VOCs in the atmosphere, ect... Just take the 2 12mm bolts out that are behind the battery(on firewall), then cut hard lines, pull condensor, if you can get under the car or the engine is out of the car enough then take out the 4 12mm bolts holding the ac unit on the back side of the block. you will need to take the rad. and fans out if they aren't already out, and just to make parts easier cut the rubber ac hoses(on ps side of engine bay).

Just to let you know the ac piping doesn't go to the radiator, it kind of snakes around it to the ac condensor(looks like the rad. but much thinner, its what you can see from looking at fromnt of the car). Pull the rad. and fans(to get to the ac condensor), then just cut the hard piping(if ac is empty, dont want freon hitting you in the face), then look behind your battery, on the firewall should be 2 hard lines that bolt to it. Take those off, the passenger side hard lines are easy to pull through...or just cut them up at several points, and pull the small pieces of piping out, then jack your front end off the ground to fit under it easier, then unbolt the 4 12mm bolts that attach the ac pump to the back side of the block, they are long bolts. watch out that your not under this piece when the last bolt comes out, heavier then you might think...trust me not fun having to try and catch it so it doesn't land on you.

I say accidents happen. Not your fault that the hardline got cut in half by a pair of bolt cutters. The burden of proof is a difficult thing to show.

In this case $$$ wins cases, and I think the government agencies in charge of this type of stuff has more then everyone on this site....combined. And why risk it when a recovery from a shop could be free of very minimal charge and a fine is 10k, I would rather spend that 10K on my car then a fine. thats just me, but I might not be right in the head thinking this:p

I just thought I'd let you all know I was able to remove the AC system with minimal release of freon. When i first cracked the line, there was a small hiss and then nothing, so I loosened it a little more let it sit for a wile. When I came back to finish and really opened the line up there was more than anticipated. It only leaked for five seconds or so.

After all was said and done, I must admit I felt a little guilty for going about things in a non environmentally friendly way. This is going to make most of you laugh, but its the truth. I looked up a local Seattle environmental protection agency and made a $40 donation. That being one of the lower donations making me a "family member".

There really wasn't that much freon in the system, so maybe I'm even in some strange form of logic.

The one on my sisters car is making tons of noise and I'm assuming it is the pulley. I'm looking for a way to take it out and replace it but I cant see a large enough path. If I were to go through the bottom I have to some how get it past the transaxle, exhaust, and suspension parts. Through the top it seems I may have to remove the power stearing fuild tank, ignition coils and maybe other stuff. Anyone have any suggestions.

Its a 97 GS

Thanks

What pump are you referring to? It should be your A/C charger. Which is located at the bottom right of the bay. The very bottom. Looks like a miniature toolbox, and it's about as heavy too.

Anyways, I removed this when I put my turbo on, and it dropped right down. You can leave the bracket there, it looks like a couple little prongs sticking out to the mounting points. You do need to remove the belt for the unit to drop out. But when you do remove the belt, you also lose your power steering. Now you can get your power steering back, but you'll need to find a belt that fits these pulleys. You do not need to remove any parts of the P/S system while trying to drop out the A/C charger, other then the belt.

Yes, the exhaust may be in your way. It may have been easier for me because mine was off at the time, and I was fibricating the downpipe for extra room down there. The transaxle and suspension parts should be nowhere near your path. They're about 6" back. Well, the transaxle atleast. The suspension is even further away.

Look at the photos I uploading onto the thread titled: Need oil feed line. On the 3rd picture down at the very bottom right you''ll see this bracket in a red powdercoat. I cannot circle or post it up right now because I'm at work. But I hope you see what I am talking about,..

P.S-Watchout for the freeon..
