Was it a pita to remove?
I can't find the write up on vfaq

You need to get a proportioning valve from a non ABS car (I think they're different) and you will need non ABS front brake lines? Someone correct me if I'm wrong as it's been a few years. The rear wheel sensors were difficult to remove but you could easily leave them in. Part of the ABS wheel speed sensor is pressed into the hub assembly so you could just do that the next time you replace your wheel bearings. I also removed the ABS control unit and all of it's related wiring...that was a pita.

I am kind of torn with the same issue. My ABS light is on and I have no idea what's wrong with it yet. So I don't know if I should just get it working as it would be nice to have that reassurance that I won't flatspot any of these high-dollar race tires, or get rid of the ABS completely to lose the weight.

You know, last season I bit the bullet and bought some RA1's. The difference was night and day. During my last session I was really pushing things because I had a great day, it was the last day of the season and if something broke, oh well. Anyway, going into big bend I was breaking way late and managed to lock up (I think all 4) for no less than 10-15 feet...no flatspots. Maybe it's the tire compound as I hear RA1's wear like iron. Nevertheless I think that learning threshold breaking is a necessity regardless and would hate to mask the skill required to do so with ABS. My vote is take it out.

Yeah, I also use the RA1's quite often. I have learned how to threshold brake as I never had ABS on my last car. However my last car did not have the big brakes like my new car does so things might be a bit different. For now I will leave it like it is. I have enough stuff to do to the car and have less than a month to do so. Dyno day coming up April 6th and the Road America the next weekend. I'll have to take the ABS out when i have everything else worked out and a few week gap between events.

I've got some questions and concerns about running my car this year. I think I have the car pretty much right where it's going to be for a while. My only short term plans for it are to get it inspected so I can start tuning my new setup with my wideband, and probably an alignment.

I plan to attend as many autocross' as possibly. I don't see any problems with my setup right now for autocrossing other than I would really like to get a racing seat as soon as I can afford to do so. My real question here is do you think my car is prepared for HPDE days? My only local track, Beaverun, is adding more and more to their schedule this year and I'd like to attend at least one of them if possible. Will I be ok without race pads (I have brand new porterfield r4-s all around), without r comps or at least shaved street tires (I have brand new Kumho MX's now), without an external oil cooler, etc? Not having the oil cooler is probably my biggest concern and I just don't know if I would need one or not.

Also, a nice thing Beaverun has started to do is add their kart track into the autocross mix. I think it is sort of a crossover into the big track, but sessions are also only about 5 laps at most as it is still an considered an autocross. Here's the configuration of the little kart track.

I don't think it will put much more stress on the car than a standard autocross though so it probably won't be a good telltale of how things would go on HPDE days. Let me know what you guys think about my car being ready or not.

Anyone know what the 2g gys have to do in terms of abs?

You can do the same thing as the 1g guys - oem non-abs prop valve and new hard lines for the front. But...this isn't a great setup for lowered cars that are racing. I've been trying to find a good solution for eliminating the abs properly.

and the Road America the next weekend. .
So we'll see you there. Cool.

probably an alignment.

If your alignment is biased towards autocross (lots of toe out) and your anticipated track has high speeds, I'd look into more toe-in.

R4s's may be ok for a few laps on a track that doesn't get you over 100mph too often, otherwise, get race pads. If your MX's get greasy after a few laps, slow down or pull off for a bit, same with low level brake fade, it won't get better by going faster.

I don't have an external oil cooler. I also don't have an oil temp guage. My 148000 mile lump still runs great. Ignorance in my case is bliss.

Caveat emptor.

An external oil cooler would help out greatly. I did not run one all series long and saw my oil temps get as high as 250 degrees. I talked to several people about this and said that was no big deal. Getting close to one, but well within the perameters of the engine. I will be getting one here soon though :D

As far as "more" stress on the car than at an autoX event. The car will be under more stress for longer periods of time at an HPDE. You have to look at it like this. The average AutoX run is what, 1:15 - 1:45 (give or take). You will be running twice as fast for longer times at an HPDE. Eventhough their runs are around 5 laps long, it will be at much higher speeds and force on the car in turns I would think than a "regular" AutoX event. Your car will be fine I am sure, people go out to these with a lot less. Good luck. :thumb:

So, for us here in the northern area, the snow is finally melting. How many of you guys have all your winter mods complete???

I took my car out this weekend and do some testing and tuning with it, and to find any little bugs that found their way to the surface. So far I am pleased with all the results from my winter mods. I have yet to install the TCE brake kit as it should be arriving this week.

The only little bug i found so far was a nasty boost spike. I'll hit 25-27psi and it will drop back down to 16-17psi. I suspect it may be the vacuum source for the wastegate so I'll have to play around with it and get that fixed. Other than that little tid bit problem, I took it through some twisties and wow is that fun!!!

Got the car fired up yesterday with the new cams, and tested out the studderbox. Still need to wire in the NLTS setup, but no rush as I'm not sure my transmission is ready for that just yet anyways.

Pulled it back into the garage and once I get it to idle decently it's going to come back apart to get the rear motor mount int, rear main seal replaced, and get the phantom grip out of the trans before it exits on its own. Then it's a last minute rush to get the seat modified, mirrors solidly mounted, and the cooling system flushed so I can get the new radiator put in with a good clean basis to work with.

sounds like someone is just starting their winter mods. OMG

Well after a week off from racing and a weekend spent at the beach (thats for you Andy), its time to get back to the car. Next week I will be ordering the 16G Turbo, Install kit and Dejon Powerhouse "Big" side monunt innercooler. That will blow the budget until next month. I have a birthday in April (7th) so I should be getting parts or money for parts there as well.

Started to pull more stuff out actually last night. Little things here and there. Going to start to tackle the ac/heater stuff this weekend. And everything else under the hood and in the cabin that does not need to be there. Trying to get all the parts orderd by June and shooting for a late July to early August finish date. But that all depends on the $$$$ situation as well. We'll see what happens. But here is the list of parts going into the car for next season.

Evo III 16G Turbo w/install kit
Dejon Powerhouse "Big" Sidemount Innercooler
Eagle Rods (have them)
ITM Pistons (have them)
ARP Main, Head and Rod Bolts (have them)
BC Intake & Exhaust Valves
BC 272/272 Cams
New Valve Guides (have them)
BC Springs & Retainers
Misc. Gaskets

I think that is about it.

Yea. The first winter mod was getting the garage ready to hold the car and tools in the first place.

So far:
Valve cover on
HKS 272's installed
650cc eprom chip installed - also fixed broken knock board
mirrors relocated (not final mount though)
new exhaust manifold gasket - replaced broken or missing studs (still have 1 though)
Fixed e-brake
Installed stainless braided lines - bled once, but need bled again, and then replaced with some good fluid.

Looks like I'll be trying to find a new 7cm exhaust housing though as the current one revealed some massive cracks around the wastegate and a stripped turbo bolt. Also looks like I may keep the phantom grip in the car and save up for a Kaaz front diff to be put in mid-summer and use some of my tax return check towards that. Was planning on picking up a JM Fab street intake manifold, but it's looking like the KAAZ will be a better buy and with all the event entry fees and everything else I may have to hold off on that til much later in the year.

Guys, dont forgot about uncle sam giving us that nice $600 check mid summer (starting May). :D

Mine will probably be spent purely on a track day at BlackHawkFarms on May 24th.

LOL....Thats funny man. I was just looking at the pay schedule for that very thing. I know where mine is going as well. Suspension parts !!! Thanks for the reminder though talonTSIdriver. :thumb:

Everything I've said reports that this is untaxable income.

Well winter is near its end, and I just got my last and probably my biggest winter mod today.
