Which turbo will be sufficient for consistent 11 second times? I've recently decided on a big 16g, but will that be big enough to run 11s with supporting mods and decent tuning? Remember, this is for a budget street car, so any one purchase over $1k is tough. A big 16g will run about $700-900, which is about $300-400 less than the larger alternatives.

Of course, I'll need lots of practice to run these times, but, I just want to make sure that it's possible before the money is spent.

WTF Are you achieving this on a stock engine or close to stock engine?!? or is that with a stroker engine and such?
Yea the 16g is a turbo upgrade from the stock 14b, 13g, or t25.

FP2x cams, stock intake manifold, evo3 exhaust manifold (not an upgrade to a ported 2g manifold), 3" exhaust, restrictive stock 1G maf. Stock revlimit, stock block, stock unported head other than the cams and valvesprings. Unmodified small 16g, no clipping or porting or anything. Just a Mr. Peepers actuator mod. 35.8 lbs/min. Good enough for 380crank hp. The maf was overrunning for sure. So this number is likely lower than actual. The Small 16G is an incredible little turbo! Considering how FAST it spools, IMHO it is the best 16g for any goal of 360whp or less.

Well my evo 3 big16g has been fun but now im looking for something more. I have a 6 bolt swap with a fresh motor. All arp internals. magnus intake, FP manifold, 880 injectors and chipped with afc and a few other things. A Friend of mine has a PTE 50trim but man that thing has to much lag for my taste. I have about 1,000 to spend maybe a tad more. Im looking at extreme psi. There Dual Ball Bearing PTEs look decent anyone have one to know how well they do? Sorry for the dumb question. Im wanting to stay with the dsm hotside and 02 housing.

I have a Slowboy Racing g50 turbo I'm trying to get rid of. Rated for 400+ horsepower, which might not be enough for your goals actually haha :rocks:

Im running a very similar setup.

I have a PTE 5031RE (BB 50trim) from Dejon Powerhouse with a .63 A/R housing internally gated. With my FP race manifold the car hits 23psi at around 3700 rpm. Its ball bearing so not as laggy and the FP manifold really does flow well in my setup.

I also have 880 injectors from FIC with a Keydiver chip and SFAC. My car hits hard and should run mid 12's and make around 375hp (ill find out tomorrow when I finally take it to the track). I run 93 octane pump gas and have ZERO knock, without even touching the SFAC (infact its not installed yet). But I do have an oversized FMIC.

Granted my turbo did cost $1350 shipped but that included all new stainless oil and water lines and a 90* coupler. But if you already have the lines/coupler the turbo itself is only about $1100, which is right near your budget.

Only thing is I heard PTE just redesigned this turbo so Id call them and check the availability of the new 5031RE "boosted".

thinking about the g50 from sbr but my power goals are wanting to go more than 400 I have another block that i will be building this winter. but need to turbo to drive on. My friends 50 trim is a turb my evo 3 big 16g ran right beside him in low gear 1st and 2nd i was ahead by a few cars

You know the turbos you are looking at on ExtremePSI are 50 trims and up. If you go bigger than a 50 trim it will spool even slower. Really the 50 trim is the best trade off for power and spool up for a street car. But I suppose you could go to a smaller A/R housing and gain faster spool up (trading top end power).

The G50 is a good 50 trim turbo, but its journal bearings so it wont spool up like your 16g.

yes I know I might be looking into a fp turbo I know i have a grand forshure. If not im looking into a bastard 20g from sbr. The pte 50 trim is just a turd till top end. Ill be running the turbo Off of a 3 inch tubular o2 housing with a tial 38mm wastegate

My pte was not a turd full 14 or 20 psi at 3300-3700.

It was fun trust me.

Yes it is a street car. I have 272 bc cams for the motor but im waiting till I get springs and retainers before installing them. Idk what it is but his is a dead turd till 4700 rpm

Well two people have told you that their PTE 50 trim hits 20 psi at 1000 rpms less, so either your friend has some issues with his car, or he is running a different turbo. Id guess he has a bad manifold leak or boost leak somewhere. Maybe you should help your friend get his car running/tuned right so you can really see what its supposed to run like.

I know my car had a warped stock manifold when I first installed my turbo and it spools up 300 rpm faster once I put a new manifold on. And it will probably pick up a little more once I install the 3" exhaust.

So wait, you want more than 400hp, a big turbo, but little lag?

ok so I have a 97GSX I have all my mods done execpt for a turbo. thats the next step.. i want to be able to have a nice daily driver and be in the 12s. I was thinking about getting the Evo3 16G but, they are a lot of money and im on a budget.. any suggestions

The MHI turbos are probably about the cheepest bolt-ons you will find, that will get you into the 12's. The evoIII16g is a great choice & will meet your goals but as I said, if you are looking for something cheeper, you'll probably have to look for a used one.

I agree, an evo3 will do the trick and you can pick up a used one in great shape like I did for $300 shipped, give or take 50 bucks. You'll need an install kit too.

So you can get a used evo 16g and the install kit for what a new evo3 costs, and considering everything, its not that expensive for what you end up with.

If you can't afford much I suggest being patient. My biggest regret is ever owning a 16g, it was a turbo I bought when I was in high school and on a budget just so I could win some street races. And now that my budget has gotten alot bigger and I am not trying to impress anyone I have had to replace my $600 16g with a real turbo.

A 16g will get you in the 12's but don't you want a turbo with a little more room to grow?

Garrett ;)

Just about any turbo seen on a dsm can propel the car into the 12's if you have the supporting mods. It is a matter of how much money you have and if you will want more in the future without upgrading turbos again.

The OP has clearly stated that price is an important consideration for him. As Daren mentioned the MHI EVO3 16G is generally accepted as a very reasonably priced turbo and good bang for the buck that will do the job. Since you stated that even this is "a lot of money" you will be limited in turbo choices. In addition to looking for a used 16G you can consider the ebay 16G turbo. A lot of guys will talk crap about them but I wonder how many of them have any personal experience with them. I have no experience with them either so I'm not recommending them or putting them down. Just pointing out that many guys are using them with good results.
