The Battle of "Eris"

100% stock, un-wrenched 1g. Been sitting on it for over 20 years waiting for my chance to build. Diamond in the rough at this point?

Well this isn’t about Eris, but rather my truck. Took it in for some maintenance cuz 1. It’s still under warranty and 2. I just don’t have time. One of the items I wanted them to check was a tapping coming from the motor that’s slowly getting worse. I thought maybe tensioner or pulley related as it changed with engine speed. Nope, apparently there’s a TSB about this issue and I’m getting a new motor. Now just hoping the dealership mechanics not putting it all together properly!
Still waiting to hear if they’re going to cover a new long block or just the short. :ohdamn:
Mine is a 2020 but it still applies apparently.

Holy crap, man. Not what I expected.

That sucks, man. At least she's covered under warranty!
Anything new with the build?

Hell no I wish. Been too busy. Hoping to tighten up a few odd ends with the body painting soon so I can figure where to start from there.

So I finally got a few hours to get to work on Eris, mostly prepping for paint around the hatch wells and door jambs. Then found two cracks in the jambs in identical spots on both sides. No idea how I haven’t seen these before. Looks like I’m going to have to practice with my little welder. Anyone else have these cracks? I’ve never welded before and was hoping to have much more practice on scrap metal before I needed to implement skill on the car. 🙄 Anyone have any advice on how to tackle this type of repair?

Also while removing the jamb stickers a “void” pattern appears while removing the car info sticker. Thought that was kind of neat never removed one before. Going to see if my printer can duplicate some for me to put back after paint, without the void checkerboard of course.

Mine did that same thing trying to get it off, it was already destroyed by previous owner so I just tore it the rest of the way off. As for those cracks mine decided to do it on the strut towers which I have no idea why. Glad to see you putting in work, we are dying to drive these things again!

Your car must have had a guest appearance on Dukes of Hazzard.

That's weird. At first I thought it was from having it on a rotisserie but that looks older.

It’s possible! Lol

Yah I think I had the weatherstripping still covering them until later on so just never noticed. And never left the car on the rotisserie longer than it took to do the work for the day/weekend. They’re pretty stout even in the air.

So I tried my hand at welding for the first time ever. Practiced on a few scrap pieces of different gauges and the went to town. Not the greatest but I tried. The metal thins out so much on these corners it’s crazy. Lowest setting on my little 120v flux core machine and still wanted to blow right through instantly.

I have that same welder and it does good for what it Is. You really can't go wrong for the price.
Turned out great in my opinion.
Thanks man. Was definitely harder than I expected. Good learning experience though.

It really does well with thicker metal but either way whatever a guy welds in just grind it smooth and it'll look great. It's tough to weld real thin stuff with that welder but it can definitely be done.
Even when I use expensive welders most of what I weld gets the flap disk to make it look nice like the strut towers and what not.

One thing I’ve been plucking away at was removing the old moulding tapes, some would come off with enough convincing, some wanted to live there. Tried about every type of solvent I could think of. The stubborn ones wouldn’t give up the ghost. Finally got smart and got the proper tool for the job. Holy crap does this thing work good!

I have one of them and they work amazing. They make quick work of any hard jobs like that. Just gotta be careful not to get too greedy or you can burn thru clear.

Yah I could see that. Repainting everything so luckily I don’t have to worry about that part.

So it’s been a rough several months. One of our dogs was diagnosed with some crazy cancer that grew a huge tumor in his rear end. No amount of money or treatments would slow it. We sadly had to put him down April 1st. Haven’t been able to focus on much else.
This weekend was the first attempt at some car therapy since.

That freakin' sucks man. That's like losing a very dear family member. I'm sorry you(and the pupper) had to go through that. :(

That is gonna look gorgeous though. I can't wait until this thing is done and dusted.

I feel for you. A couple years ago I adopted a 7mo blue pitbull terrier from a local shelter. I only had her until she was 3.5yo. She got lymphoma and it was very aggressive, she was gone after only a few weeks post diagnosis. Take the time to mourn, but don't lose sight of what keeps you going and makes you happy.
