Well the car is finally back together again. I snapped a shift fork in the trans a couple weekends ago. So i treated the car to a new set of syncros in the process :)

With a little more adjustment to the tune, as well as some more seat time im hoping for a good result this weekend. (fingers crossed)

im that guy from shootout that ran the 10.9s...
sorry for just now seeing this threat

car is fully streetable
i normally drive a hour and a half each way to one of the two local tracks

would love to drive it to shootout and back one of these years but i keep getting a sweet deal from my boss with an enclosed trailer

also shootout was the first time out with my cars current setup, thats why i had a few crappy passes then finally got my head out of my butt and ran a good pass, 12.2@127- 10.97@129 haha

i have to say i was totally sleeping at the line in the semi final too

Cool! Glad to see you up here on the thread. Congrats on 10.9, that is pretty incredible:thumb: I'm interested in your 1/8 mile ET and speed on that 10.9. Would you share?

I have a few updates on my 16G build.

I got a new EVO3 exhaust manifold delivered yesterday. Thanks to Matt from NJ for posting his eBay ad at the right time. I ported and polished it tonight. This replaces the old, unported and cracked ex. mani that was on the car. I should pick up a few HP here.

I'm converting the 16G to a downflow outlet. This will remove the 180* bend coming off the turbo and improve flow. Check out my thread: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/custom-fabrication/380121-downflow-outlet-16g.html

I'm going to do something with the wastegate to hold boost better. I have't decided yet, but I want something cheap and easy( like a true DSM'er) :)

I also picked up a set of true slicks! My BFG Drag Radials worked very well these past 2 seasons, but now I'm ready for the next level.

Nice Dave, I'm sure these improvements will be worth their weight. Now, go for it, and no damn granny shifting, out for a Sunday stroll drivingROFL The downflow outlet you made is killer!

I guess that can happen from time to time on a hard shift. glad you got it repaired and made some upgrades in the process. I'm hoping you'll be able to touch 10's this year so good luck and I'll be anxious to hear of how the weekend goes:thumb:

You comin' out this weekend for the final CMI? We gotta hook up if so.

With 965 tech post, this is the dumbest thing you've ever POSTED on this site. I'm not going to flame you, argue, or disrepect you. My opinion is just that and you have yours. I believe "Fast is Fast". If he was able to break into the 9's with that a 16g turbo it's just as impressive as Curt's 10.30s@ 137. If it was that easy everyone would be doing it. It takes alot to make a nitrous car work. I wouldn't mine trying to shoot for the same goal and puttinf my current setup on hold. To date less then 10 have put 16g into the 10s. With or without spray. I have 1/8 mile times, but no 1/4 mile times to compare wih everyone 16g times.

Relax man. I know Nate. I'm just busting his balls. I'll more then likely be at the track with him next time he goes. ROFL

thats great that e316g is pushing them great times at the track hopefully you get that thing in the 10

as far as new mods i think the biggest help was going to a jm race manifold from my extude honed stock manifold and a different approach of tuning the car by none other then Mr. 237, Mike Reichen.

i did go 11.35@125 previously in stock appearing class trim from last year

the night before shootout was also the first time we started playing with the tune, Mike was figuring out my car still between passes on race day, couldn't of made my first 2 10 sec passes with him.

For the Auto 16g guys out there...are you all having to use nitrous to bring up the stock converter or are you able to stall it off of the turbo alone? I ask because I'm looking into an e316g (getting one that needs a rebuild from a buddy...free) and I'm trying to get a 1g together over the winter for next season. I'm either looking towards the e316g or the 14b, and it will be compounded (eventually) with either a true hx35 or hx40 turbo (full t3). I am also looking at the g4cs block and trying to get some info together on that to gain some spool/torque down low...but if the 2.0 will stall the e3, then I can hold off on the block.

i know it's not the same but i should be getting some 1/8 times tomorrow in my evo 3.

18psi with a walbro 255, blitz sus intake, megan o2 housing, megan 3" downpipe and kakimoto 3" exhaust.

Not sure what the exact weight of my car is but it is supposed to be around 2775lbs.

I just found this thread, and I can't believe what you guys are doing with an EvoIII 16g. I've been struggling to get into the 12's, and so far I've only done three sub-13 second passes.

My car weighs around 3000 pounds with everything including A/C, P/S, spare, child seat, etc.. But it seems I should be able to pull more out of it on a pump gas tune. I've got my AFRs between 10.7-11:1, but it still pulls around 2-3 degrees of timing at the top or 4th. I'm only running max 15 degrees of timing and 17-18 psi.

Opinions, ideas?

Edit: I'll post a log if anyone cares to look at it, but my laptop is still in the car at my shop, and I'm at home.

E85, drag radials/slicks, and full boost(30 psi).

I think there's two E85 stations within 50 miles of me, but neither is along my normal route. I just don't think I could deal with searching for gas whenever I leave town, and driving 5-10 miles out of my way to gas up when I'm going to work or whatever.

Shouldn't I be able to do better on 93? Perhaps 17-19 degrees of timing, with 20psi? Maybe low 12's? It just seems off to me. If that sounds normal then my next step would be water/meth, but I just feel like there should be more power on the table.

Ps. These guys are doing 11's on street tires, so slicks cam't be good for that much more. I do 1.85/60' times.

Most boost man. My turbo was happy in the 25psi range on pumpgas. Good enough for 11.6s@119mph on 17" street tires. Personally I prefer less timing and more boost on pumpgas.

Wednesday my car went 11.4@123 spinning on the streets and 11.1@124 on the slicks. HG is DONE now LOL. Head's off the car and waiting for a new gasket. Hope to be back at the track soon enough with a few fixes and a motor that holds its coolant!

Ugh, I don't really want to lift my head, but that's what I'm battling with. I still see knock even with my whimpy tune. What, pull all the timing out and crank the boost controller all the way down so I have to blow the wastegate open?

25 psi sounds awesome, but what kind of timing were you running?
Are we talking 7* at 7000, is that within reason? I already pulled almost half the timing from the stock 1g basemap.

My best 60' was 1.816 last Wednesday. Is that bad? I trapped a 12.905 that pass at 107.73

No not bad at all. 1.8's are decent, but there are alot of gains to be had by slicks, just check these people pulling 1.4 60fts. That's at least .4 off your 1/4, which normally equates to more! Not saying you need them, just making sure you understand there is alot of gains with slicks.

Sounds like you need to bite the bullet and put some real gas in there. I think 11's are doable on an evoIII 16g with pump gas, but you're leaps and bounds ahead when you pour in some proper fuel. This is the reason E-85 is so popular these days, you can run it on the street, yet still run good timing and boost. Obviously this is tougher for those who can't get it locally, pour some 116 in the tank at the track and do some more tuning.

Yeah I realize they would help, but I hate to spend money, and four slicks and lightweight wheels are going to cost a pile of money.
Then I would need to transport them 60 miles each way to the nearest 1/4 mile track. That would mean taking the child seat out for sure LOL.

Besides, wheels aren't going to stop me knocking in fourth at 12* timing while dropping off to maybe 15psi. Something's wrong. I'm starting to think my ebay core wasn't such a great buy.
I don't need to set any records, I just want to be able drive hundreds of miles with the A/C on, then do maybe a 12.00 on pump gas. Not haul tires, then work on my car on the ground with a floorjack.

I reduced my plug gap from .028 to .025, and if that doesn't help I'm going to have to tap an IAT sensor into my UICP and see what's going on in there.

Edit: Besides, if I wanted to run slicks, I would have left the car FWD.
I hope this wasn't too much of a thread jack. Sorry, but these times not only inspire me, but make me feel how much fail my timeslip has printed on it.

Take it easy, this isn't 'all-or-none' tuning. Tune it one step at a time, read the datalogs and timeslips, then make adjustments.

Give it what it likes. Pump gas has it's limits so don't be surprised if you go slower at higher boost. I also like big intercoolers and/or meth injection with pump gas so you can run more boost or more timing.

That's not bad, it's about average for street tires and high 200 to low 300 hp range. Your trap speed is a good match for the mph, so your driving is on par. It'll get better with more seat time and some determination. I was able to cut consistent 1.5 to 1.6 60' times with drag radials, both on the 14b and GT35, so good tires can only help. Just make sure you don't overcompensate by getting some huge heavy tires, lighter is better.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I was just curious what timing others get away with on pump gas. I realize my 9:1 pistons might make tuning a little more delicate, but is it normal to be knocking on such low boost and timing?

I've been trying to get an answer to this since day one with this setup, and before I built this engine in '07, I have had absolutely "zilch" for tuning experience. Screw it, I'm pulling my UICP today and welding in a bung for an IAT. At least then I'll know if my air charge temp is to blame.

I'll post back Wednesday with my 1/4 mile results.

Post a log. There are tuning geniuses on here that will pick that thing to the bone. The timing that you can run on these pistons will generally be lower then you see people run on there stock ones, especially when using pump gas. The higher compression aftermarket pistons can usually take the added heat caused from running lower timing, to an extent of course.

The times that you are running are great for a full weight 3000lb colt. Once we get the tuning down, and the boost up, your car will fly.

If you get the log to us soon, we might be able to help you improve the tune for Wednesday.

Get the meth injection then you will be able to turn up the boost and the timing. Having high compression pistons and only pump gas on a turbo car is going to limit you.

So last weekend I ran a 12.028 at 115.45. With a 1.659 60 ft. Im running a big 16g with stock bottom and 3bolt rear. Haha, so how much wiggle room do you guys thing i have? I know a 4bolt is in the near future. Oh and that was on crappy street tires, and my trans grinding into 2nd. Im putting another transmission in it now. What are some thoughts?

Don't be surprised by the ammount of timing you have to pull. The 16G spools up at low rpm, and timing needs to be lower at low rpm. Timing should also be lower at max boost, so hitting 25psi at 4k rpm doesn't leave much room for timing. For example, my timing map with a 16g spiking to 29psi at 4500rpm has timing at 1*, yes that's ONE degree. And that's with E85. I also have 9.0 compression. My timing ramps up to 16* by 7500rpm @ 21psi, so it looks normal up there. Be flexible, don't be swayed by the tuners who brag about high timing. Most of the time a guy bragging about high timing numbers is either beyond MBT or his setup has backpressure issues.

You've given us zero info.

Great 60 foots on street tires. I've gone [email protected] (personal best for a while on pumpgs) on a beat "big 16g".. stock bottom end with probally 140k on it at the time.

115mph traps was good for 11.90's. Give us more info.

Nice, well i know my page was meant for a joke. But i have a bunch done. 950cc injectors, fp2 cams, dual valve springs, mitsu mls head gasket, Arp headstuds, All new timing, dsmlink (tuned by myself), gm maft, balance shaft removed, fmic, walbro 255, coil overs etc. etc. plus E-85 which is = to amazing. So i mean i have a bunch done, Im just wondering what you guys think of my time with a 16g, along with any pointers.
