step-by-step on filling in old spoiler holes [Merged 9-6]

Maybe its just me but I have come to perfer a spoilerless look also. I had an apr gtI wing on for awhile and now am completely spoiler/wingless. I had the original holes welded and sanded by a body shop, with the repaint the total was around $400. Once I took off my apr wing I just used the chrome bolts that held it on and siliconed them into place. If I were you I'd suggest trying to locate a stock hatch of an RS that is the same year and color. Thats what i'm gonna attempt to do, hopefully I will be able to find one that doesn't have the paint faded too bad. That should be cheaper than having the holes filled again.

I searched around and didn't see any topics addressing this.

I removed the spoiler from my '90 Turbo and I'm trying to figure out the best way to patch some of the holes in the hatch and fenders. I also need to figure out how best to remove the white stud mounts that are pressed into the body that hold the spoiler parts on. Is Bondo and a hand drill the only way to go here? One of the holes, the one for the 3rd tail light, is rather large. Will a Bondo plug hold up in a 1"+ hole?

Thanks for any help.

BTW: I'll probably sell this spoiler, what is a good starting price? Thanks.

no bondo will not, it might for a while but if you dont weld it up you will crack, drill out the plastic plugs and weld them up with a wire welder...

Cool. I'll probably end up mig welding the smaller holes and welding a plate under the large hole so I can fill it in with body filler. I don't trust my mig skills that much yet to fill in something that size in such an obvious location.

I removed the factory spoiler off of my 97 talon, and put an after market spoiler on it. How can I get rid of those ugly factory spoiler holes without having to spend a grip of cash on it? Anyone know anywhere in the Oxnard, CA area where i can get them filled and painted or something? Thanx:thumb: :talon:

I would use little rubber plugs, like they use for feet on various
small appliances, like a phone.
They make clear silicone ones, as well as black.
Grommets are easy to find, but you have to fill the center hole.
Doesnt fix it but gives a finished, low key appearance.
Try radio shack and grainger to start.

Bigglesworth87 is clearly a Brit or Brit-o-phile.
Over there a grip is a satchel or valise.
Links to plug suppliers are at the bottom of the page -
Caplugs and MOCAP

Well i went to a dealership and they wanted to charge me like 1800 bucks to do it, thats what I mean by alot of money. I was told that bondo would do the trick, but like 3 of the holes are way to big for bondo, I was looking for a cheaper route.

nothing is to big for bondo
how big are they?
since theyre probably on a flat surface, some plastic body filler should to the trick. and a can of touch up paint.
not the prettiest or best way to do it though.

The large holes i am talking about are about 1-2 inches in diameter, and then with every large hole there are 2 little holes that are about 1/2 inch in diameter. Bondo for sure on the little holes, but yeah the big ones are the problem.:thumb: :talon:

what youre going to have to do for the bigger holes is to have someone weld a peice of sheet metal behind them then fill it in with bondo or whatever body filler you choose. I have had good luck with the bondo brand "UV" filler, it is flexible and doesnt crack like regular bondo.

Or you could just put fiberglass epoxy strips on the bottom and filll the top with bondo. My friend bought a rusty probe and chopped like 10 parts out of the trunk and use the strips and bondo to fix it. Looks great and is very cheap.

I posted a thread about a week ago about filling in 9 holes in my hatch so I could put an aftermarket spoiler on it.Now, when I have a guy weld it,should he:

-weld washers to the inside of the hatch and fill weld from the top?

-cut out round peices sheet metal and put into holes and tack all the way around each one, then grind?

Any input would be great!:talon: :D

I had a guy I know weld in some 20guage sheet metal plugs in the holes that origanally held the middle spoiler...My new after market single wing will be delivered next friday.stay tuned for those pics. Also I'm going to start filling in the newly welded holes later today.I decided to paint my car...Black Saphire.....It's the metallic black that you see on new BMW's.Does anyone know where I can get this paint?I know the paint code is 425.Where do I go from there?

Go to any of the autobody supply shops in Syracuse to get the paint. If you want I can paint your car for stupid cheap I am a painter at a custom/restoration shop and I am looking for some side work.

sorry to hijack but...

since your an experienced painter, how much do you think it would cost to paint a whole 1g. It would be jet black..

the ex-owner of my car got one of those cheap 100 buck paint jobs and its starting to "curl up" and flake off.

Sorry but it's hard to say a price on a paint job because there are just to many variables like where you go, where you live and what kind of shop you go to the place I work at will do a paint job for anywhere between 12,000 and 20,000 I also know of a shop in washington that does them for around 30,000 but we all do top end show winning paint jobs but just to get a basic from a body shop it could cost between 1,500 and 4-5,000 or you could go to macco and get one of those $199 specials that only last long enough to sell the car. you just have to remember that you do really get what you pay for.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I was thinking about doing the same thing.

Did any 95-99 eclipses come with no spoiler at all? If I could find an owner of the same color without a spoiler, could we just swap hatches? Is there a difference in the hatch between the 95-96s and 97-99s? Would I loose anything? The only thing I can think of would be the rear wiper, which I hardly ever use.
