Door Locks [Merged 9-6]

I know that when I was installing my alarm (a faulty unit from crimeguard) it burned up my lock relay(The big one behind the dash on a 1g). I imagine that they can also fail for many other reasons including just wearing out, might be somethign to look into. :)

I was thinking maybe it had something to do with the dynomat that I had put on but it just doesnt make sense to me. Any ideas on disabling the factory alarm? The only way that I usually turn it off is by popping my hood, plugging my ears and disconnecting the battery...

any way to test the lock relay to see if its still good? I thought there's just a fuse for them ... but maybe there's a relay. My wiring is really fubar'd in this car as it is. Speedo and odometer don't work either ... neither do interior lights.

most likely its not the relay....my 2g's door locks dont work, ive replaced the relay and it still didnt help, i think the actual lock itself is fuct which i think is a common 2g problem....ever seen how much new locks are? i think ill reach over and do it by hand ;)

But seriously,

Im having problems w/ my power door locks. The passenger side locks fine everytime, but the driver side is another story. It will go for a period of about 3-4 days locking perfectly. Then itll go another 3-4 days and wont lock at all. Basically i can hear the click like its going to lock, but the lock will start to move then push its way back into the unlocked position. Even when i try to lock it manually, it will push out of the lock position and stay unlocked. Its really become a PITA when im at school for a class and the MF wont lock.

Could this be my actuator going out? I wouldnt think so since its been doing it for months now, but ill take any suggestions b4 i decide to start cutting wires and make it a manual lock.

I have the same problem. I think it may be a wiring issue somewhere, but I'm too lazy to check it.

Have you tried holding the inside door handle open and pushing the lock button at the same time?

That is how I lock my door without using the key/device. Try that. If it is not locking then, you might need to get the motor or locking mechanism itself checked over.

Ill try that, ive looked over the locking mechanism and its fine, nothing in the way of it. Also the motor is still sending power to the lock to lock it, it just wont push over into the lock position.

relay on its way out perhaps ?

(and to think i was on my way in here to whine about not serching b4 posting )

This would be my guess.

Didnt think of that at all, im going to have to check or just replace it.

Haha, i was hoping the title brought a sigh to most people.

Mine does it too. It's probably been doing it for a year or more.. but I can lock it manually if the button doesn't work, so I never bothered to check into it.

Sure was

I believe i found the problem, thanks dave99gst.

What was it? Can you let me know? I'd like to fix mine as well.

bought a talon and the doors wont lock... push the button manually and it opens... use the key and it opens... i took the panel off and checked it all it seems to work ok if i use pliers and force the door to lock. anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it??

can you put the button into the lock position and have it stay there? or does it pop back out?

I know my 97 GST had a "safety" feature that wouldnt let you open and then lock the doors if your keys were in the ignition. Even if you take them out and the little sensor inside the ignition doesnt come back to the "empty" spot, the car would think the keys are still in there. My GS is starting to get stuck like that... It'll beep at me when I open the door like the keys are still in the ignition.

Im not sure if the Talon had this saftey feature, but its worth a shot.

the buttons stay if you push them... but its a real mushy feel when you push them, its obvious theyre not workin right. in the locked position it still opens, and yea... the local dealer quoted 205 a piece for locks!!!!!!!

theres a really good, easy lock fix on here.... $30 worked great for me for a few months so far

my problem isnt with the acuator.. they work fine, they just dont push the linkage far enought to lock the doors all the way. with the panels off i can push the linkage by hand and lock the doors, but the buttons cant push it far enough. also the tumblers arent at the right angle because with the key in the door turned to the right its locked, the instant you turn it vertical to try and pull the key out the door unlocks. hard to explain but thanks for your input and the link

I myself am having problems with my driver side door lock. It locks and unlocks perfectly... but when i unlock it it makes a grinding noise like the gears inside the power door long thing are slipping... is there something i can do to fix this? or has it just gone bad... help me out!

I'm to lazy to check mine as well but be careful because a few times I have found my car open in the morning somehow it unlocks the passenger door on it's own.

To get to the door lock relays you have to take out the center console between the seats, then the radio. The door lock relay is all the way in the back under the climate control. There are two relays total in there, and I believe the one you need is the smaller one on the far right. You should be able to find the one that you need using the part number on it.
Hope this helps a bit.

Wow, this thread was opened a long time ago, I never did figure out what was wrong with the locks, eventually they just started working fine, I did notice that the cold was what made it happen most (if not all of the time)...

I actually got a TSI over a year ago and gave that car to my little brother for his 16th birthday, I havent heard him say he's had any problems with the locks either... I was fortunate I guess that it fixed itself :)

Good luck with getting yours working, I'd like to know what caused other peoples problems incase it happens to my brother...
