Plastidipped my car.

It would hold up fine. Guess you skipped over the part where one member coated his beer mug (glass) and put it through the dish washer multiple times to no I'll effect. This stuff is meant to be used as new grips for tool handles and such so I don't see any issues with it not lasting on some "rough" paint. Besides, roughness means more grip aka primer.

However if there is rust, I personally would remove what I could but apparently you can spray over rust and protect the rest of the metal from he elements therefore rust protecting that spot.

On the beer mug thing: apparently you cant put soup in a plastidipped mug and put it in the microwave... it held up so well untill that point i never even thought about it. But yea, i dont recommend it.
If you dont wash your car with chicken soup and microwave it dry you should be fine! :thumb:

:hmm:

pissed.

please go into detail.....

Plastidip is a protective coating which will prevent any rust and seal what ever you are spraying. Not sure how your roof could have gotten ruined from just rain/frost

really interested in hearing more about this. my drip rails have held up find to frost. I Think the key may be putting it on very very thick. I would be interested in hearing how many coats you put on and how you prepped it.

How is the lens that clear?? Mine is not that clear and it hasn't yellowed or anything. Yours looks like a clear aftermarket lens.

Anyways, here is the car with the fenders and bumper on. The hood is still not on obviously. Enjoy.

Hey man, the car looks absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for being "that guy" who tries some new things. I give it an A+.

i want to be the 2nd guy to do this! im currently in the process of doing the whole car.

Just curious OP, how is this holding up? What is the climate like where you live?

Everyone was curious to how well this stuff holds up in the snow....well, it snowed here Sunday - Tuesday and the car is covered....I wiped it off and the paint is still good.

Pics to come soon.

Did you wipe it off by hand or use a brush and scraper?

I went out and got 2 cans. I'm going to do my hood or my front bumper this weekend.

Happy to hear!

Any ice or just snow? Can't wait to see how it holds up to ice removal. Pretty much my main decisive factor on whether or not ill be doing this. Damn you Canada, why do you have to be so cold!!!

I guess water or frost got on to the paint while it was 2ish hours into drying. It now looks like I have a sun faded roof next to the sunroof. Everywhere else is good, except that area. Gonna be repainting it next week.

EDIT:
Here are some pics with lighting that you can see it on camera in.

And here's the difference between the normal paint and the plastidip. The hatch turned out fine. So use that as reference to compare.

It's easy to tell were the water got a hold of it.

ouch the roof looks like its hurting pretty bad. kinda looks the same as my hatch where paint is fading really bad. Next time you spray it let it dry for atleast 4-8 hours. so if you can, spray it at night then drive it in the morning so you know it will be dry for sure.

The one nice thing about plastidip is, that if you want to remove it you can cut a slit or try to peel up a corner of the part that is sprayed and peel everything off. So you can either do that or try and spray over it with a few coats.

yea definetly do it before it gets cold out and frost appears.

I spray my car in the shop i work at and we have a heated shop so i only wait about 10 minutes in between each coat to spray and wait a couple hours before i reattach the part to the car or decide to touch it.

Not sure why you had a problem with the water after it already tack dried. Must be in your prep work.

After I had scuffed the OEM paint with the steel wool and sprayed everything down with water, as I was painting, water seeped out from little cracks and crevices. Never affected a damn thing.

Also, on the snow comment. There was snow and ice both....the snow I used a brush and brushed it off. The ice I did NOT scrape off. I left it to melt on its own. Using a brush to get the snow off rendered no ill effects on the paint. If you scrape it, you WILL scrape the paint off. I guarantee you that.

So do you think its necessare to steel wool prior to spraying the car? I've just been making sure that I clean the surface with soap and water then dry it off and spray it with an air chuck to get any dust off. So far I've painted my my hood, both front fenders, and my wing. So far eveythinh is looking fresh. Just gotta get the rest of the car done when I get back from my trip to georgia.

On my driver side rear quarter panel I have 2 semi small rust holes that the previous owner had painted over. I'm thinking I'm just going to plastidip over it for now then when I get money next year bring it up to my guy who does body work and have him fix it.

Redid my roof and also did my hood. But I need another coat on both. The hood had some bad areas that still kind of show through. And the roof doesn;t look as smooth as the first time I did my roof/hatch.

what are your guys thoughts on painting over this stuff? I'm thinking of plastidipping my wheels then spraying a different color over. So if I don't like the color I can just peel it off.

And the water damage wasn't bad prep, just bad timing. Was a really cold foggy night(day when I started) when I tried a second coat the first time, so the water accumulated as it dried.

just use pressure and your finger and it should come off. I got some on my window the first time and i just used some hard pressure and a micro and it came off fine. If its connected to a main portion that is already been sprayed use a razor or something sharp.

wow this is awesome... im gonna have to do this to my jeep.. instead of a new paintjob or doing rhino liner..
very durable and easy to touch up!

Don't quote me bon this for sure but I want to say 3m adheshive remover has the chemical in it to break down the plastidip, same with brake cleaner. If its on glass, I would just use a razor blade scraper to get it off.
