Is 3k a fair deal for a single stage paint job(viper red), bodywork (fixing multiple dents), welding holes in the hatch of the vehicle? 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST? 3k was my quote from body shop owner that seems very honest and has 5 a star rating with 50+ reviews. Family owned

IMO and in my area (North Florida) that’s about the standard pricing for bodywork+paint. Maaco does their $500 spray but that’s barely any prep work or repairs. Basically just a quick spay and to end up needing to be repainted again. The last time I got quoted from a shop to get my IS300 repainted was in the range of $6000-$10k for a entry level 3 stage This was for a Metallic white/Pearl White with a few body corrections (I didn’t want to pay that so I’m doing it myself now LOL)

Ahahaha I wouldn’t wanna pay that either.

I think when I got my Galant repainted many years ago I think we paid like $1K-ish? I might be wrong because I wasn’t driving it at that time. It was an entire repaint with a new front end after a deer incident. Paint still looks good besides a few spots of clearcoat peel and a few shopping cart dents

That is a very reasonable price. Especially with the other things you are mentioning they will be doing as well. Paint is getting really expensive and good body work takes hours and hours. You need to book that quote immediately LOL, before they go higher. I painted by own engine bay and interior myself just now and it was almost $800 just in paint/clear and prep supplies. Not to mention my own time spent hours upon hours sanding and prepping it for paint.

I’m in the same boat with my IS300. I’m molding the wide body and carbon skinning the roof and trunk. I’ve been on and off with the prep work but it takes forever LOL. It’s definitely cheaper in a way but the work that goes into it is the deal breaker LOL

Appreciate all of your thoughts. I will be posting the end results here. Car going in the shop today. I’ll keep y’all posted.

FWIW I would opt for a 2 stage paint with a base and clear. I’ve seen some single stages come out nice and all but the 2 stage I feel is always a better product in the end.

You ever see any of this shops work personally?

-Daniel
Yes you are right. I’d love to opt for 2 stage but the price bump is just something I can’t do right now. I would love to wait but I want to get this car in better shape asap. 2 stage later down the road for sure. I have seen their paint work and it’s pretty damn good. Single stage is perfect right now for just getting it in way better shape.

Its the body work that costs. it’s the bodywork that makes it look good.

And you will need great looking trim, cowling, wipers, lenses wheels and glass to be happy. All these details cost and only cover the exterior.

I would like to be the voice of reason here and just either wait, or spring for the 2 stage NOW. You will be waaaaay happier with it in the long run and also not spending DOUBLE or more down the road to do everything again. I know you want it done ASAP, and we have all been there wanting soemthing NOW, but please... wait or just do it now. You will thank me later.

Already did it💀 I’ve seen single stage done right. It’s not the end of the world. As long as it’s taken care of and done properly it’ll be fine. Not spending a fortune on a car that might blow up anyway.

Sounds like you should be spending money on the engine then instead of a cheap paint job LOL.

Judging by the skull emoji you may just be young and just need to learn things on your own.

Car runs amazing. Engine isn't showing any signs. I’m just saying, catastrophic shit happens all the time.

Totally understand. A lot of people are fine with just OK.
I appreciate your understanding. I honestly don’t see the issue with single stage viper red. It’s a solid color🤣. Not like I’m going with a metallic or a pearl, then I’d have to go with bc/cc.

The issue is how the paint is laid out and then how the clear flows out after. A single stage will always be more dull than a dual stage of course. Metallic of Pearls aside, the individual base and then clear stages will always be a better quality and appearance than single stage. The base color in a dual stage is also more vibrant and pops more beneath the individual clear. BUT, more work and cost of course. It is what it is.

Makes sense. Thank you for explaining.

Its a decent deal, if you know a guy sometimes they can do it cheaper

Had mine done with full color change and pdr for $3300 back during covid when shops were slow

Is this single stage? If so what color is this blue? I might wanna change my color before the body shop starts.

I’d say that’s a fair deal. I hate when I hear what people pay when the bodywork is bad and it’s already painted. You could have done a better job with some hand sanding with no knowledge and come out better then some of these vehicles I see.
