Does anyone work at a body shop and can price out ppaint for me..I got a quote today but he said black was like 500 a gallon, and clear was like 700..Is my busddy just blowing smoke up my a**???

Thats a bit high. At wholesale you can get a gallon of clear and a gallon of base(color) for around $450-$500 for Dupont chroma.

Is that $500 a GALLON?? Wtf kind of paint is it? I know black can be a fairly expensive color, but I think the most I've priced for it before was like mybe a little over $100. Now... you won't need much more than a gallon of color to paint your car because you will reduce it. I'd check that again. ALSO. Automotive Paint, Auto Paint, Car Paint has paint kits. I think I paid $204 shipped for a gallon of base, a gallon of clear, and 3 quarts of reducer. It also came with stirry sticks and strainers and a couple of those white masks which are almost useless for painting a car, but the thought was nice. Anyway... I'd ask your buddy to recheck those prices again.

Maybe it was part of a drug bust and it's got cocaine in it. I can't think of too many other reasons why a gallon of black paint would cost $500 or clear to be $700.

It's like $24 shipping too. Or atleast it was too me. It did take a couple days to get here, but we're using one of those kits for my GS. It sprays pretty smoothly (it would help if my car wasn't such a train wreck before). My husband didn't complain too much about it except he said he hates spraying metallic paints heh. But seriously.. it's an awesome way to go -nods-

WOW, I have like 450 in my paint all together. From primer, to about 8 layers of clear coat. Your friend sucks. Not to mention green pearl as well besides the black base coat.

It's my little GS that's being painted. It's not done yet. In my avatar pic it's the one in the middle. He did spray the roof and the hatch just to see what it was going to look like. It's going to look pretty awesome when it's all done. I'm really excited. If you're not going to paint your car for a little bit, mine should be done by the end of this next week (hubby's taking leave). I'll post pictures of it all done.

$400 for paint whos smoking crack? i can get ppg black 1 gallon for 150! 200 for clear. man u bring me all the materials ill pant your car for $600 if you help ill do it for $400

Paint prices will vary by manufacturer but that price is high for typical paint. I painted my car with Glasurit which is top of the line paint, and for primer, paint, clear and all the needed hardeners, additives and reducers I spent about $800 and that was enough material to do a complete color change and I had about 1.5 quarts left over. If you were to use an average paint line from PPG or BASF you should only spend about $300 at most for basecoat and clearcoat to do a whole car, maybe another $35 -$45 for primer too if you need it. A gallon is more than enough, once you reduce it, you have two sprayable gallons of material, I bet you will barely use one sprayable gallon, if that.

Don't get too disappointed dude. i got quoted 5K to paint my car last summer. That was with me doing the prep. I LOVE ALASKA!!!!! I'm probably ordering that trinity kit colt mentioned. It's nice that you can buy everything to paint your own car these days for cheaper than it is to have it painted.

Gallon of clear and hardener should be around 70-80 depending on quality ... paint depends on what color code you're going off of. About 130+

That's true, but that depends on intentions. If you're using a dd or race car, you don't need a show quality paint job. I know many people who use coffee filters and tarp to paint their cars and they look nice. Paint's mostly in the prep. People are rustoleum painting their cars these days with a roller.
