Looking for replacement ignition coils and have visited the forum sponsor sites as well as a few others. The only ignition coil offered has terminals on the base of the coil pack, and the mounting holes do not line up with the holes on the bracket.

Here are the coils that were on the car and they appear to be factory original. The company is still in business making coil packs, but no longer lists the part as being available:

Here is what is listed in all the sites still showing coils for DSMs. This one arrived with a broken stud. Listed as Delphi GN10274 14022:

Yes, the existing harness can be modified to use spade terminals, but given the vibration of the engine, this doesn't seem like the winning plan.

What is everyone else doing that for coils, short of running 25+ year old packs?

Thank you.

I've always ran old oem coils, went 9's on them with no CDI. They seem to work or not, not much in between in my personal experience.

Thanks for the input. After 178k miles, just seems the spark is weak and causing an incomplete burn even with new plugs and wires, especially at lower rpm’s.

We’ll check to see if there are some electrical measurements we can do to see if they are still in spec, and how the new, delphi ones compare.

Weak spark does not cause incomplete burn.

Please explain. What else might cause this? Smoking and smelling rich at idle and low speed (maybe high speed too — can’t tell). ISC stepper and TPS and BISS seal all replaced and calibrated. Idle timing set to 16* per our tuner (N/A car). No WB as of yet, but the scanner will log fuel trims. Just trying to find out the source.

If the fuel ignites, it burns, simple as that. Weak spark doesn't make it burn less or slower. It either ignites the fuel or it doesn't. If it doesn't burn completely it's an issue with the air/fuel mixture.

If it is too rich it will run poorly, are you SURE the idle mix is tuned right? When you get a WB, you will know for sure. If any car I am fiddling with has a fuel issue, I stick my AEM UGEO in the tailpipe and take a look at the AFR's. It may not read perfect like it would in the proper location but it does tell me SOMETHING. How is the tuner tuning without a WB Steve?

I understand the principle of what you are saying, but if a coil pack goes bad on my GM 3800, where two of the cylinders are getting a lower voltage than the other cylinders on a different coil pack, the engine runs rough.

Perhaps there’s more at play with this car and it’s not the coils, but it’s not a bad idea to replace 25 year old ignition components. Hopefully, there has been improvement in ignition parts over the years.

We’ll be pulling the ‘99 GSX ECU out to check the injector circuits. If it’s flaky, we’ve got ECMLink in the wings.

The idle mix was confirmed recently with EvoScan, but has been getting worse. That’s a neat trick to use the WB in the tailpipe. Our tuner clipped his on there to tune, but we assumed it was a unit that was designed to work at the pipe and didn’t think of using a mobile setup.

Thank you everyone. I really started this thread to see what our coil options are, and to get diagnostic help has been a real bonus. When we have hard data to report, We’d love to have your help moving forward.

This is what I use. The picture is kind of grainy but it is an Innovate WB adaptor.

Curious how these have performed I’m looking to buy a newer set from rock auto instead of sourcing the originals aging ones.

After a 100 miles, these are working great! We could tell a difference with the faster starts and smoother idle right away. Not sure if these are higher output than the Mitsu OEM coils, but they make the throttle respond well.

They did require modification to the mounting bracket though (See Post #83, https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/sun-burned-’99-spyder-gs-revived.483010/page-4).

As mentioned, RA has a set of the original Diamond coils with the bracket available, but you have to look under 4G63 Turbo only to find it. Since we were committed to getting the car running, we modified the mounting plate and will make a new one in the spring.
