Having some major problems with the electrical in my 91 Laser. Does any one know if there is a difference in the coil of a 90 model vs 91? I know the plugs are square and triangle, and there is a tacho interface on the 90. I cheeked around at a few part houses and the coil packs carry different part numbers. Is there a different voltage or amount of spark between the coil packs ?

Thanks Skulz :laser:

i know for a fact that the ignition system between the two cars differs in some way, i would assume that the coils are not interchangable...

It's my understanding that the coils themselves are the same but the bracket and wiring is different since the '90 coil assembly has the tach sender on it rather than in the power transistor like on the later cars. So, if you unbolt the coils you should be able to swap them.

Were you checking the numbers off the coils or the part number for the assembly?

Confirmed, I have disassembled the coils from a '90 style bracket and assembled them into my '91 coil bracket, they are running just fine.

Well, Im just blown away... I bought this Laser on a great deal and was thinking of doin something with it :D . It didnt run when I bought the car, but there were a few parts in the floor that look as tho they have been changed, CMP, and a tacho interface and some black bracket. With further looking into I found the car has no spark and the bracket on the coil has the holes to attach the tacho interface, and also to all checking with the book(from 1g coils to even the 2g coils ) they are in no paramaters that im seeing, so I beleave the coils are bad. After reading some articals from this site, Iv also tried to use a light tester on the coil harness and out of the 3 wires that go to the triangle plug only one wire will show power in the light, assuming its my hot wire. as to the next step and turning the car over and looking for one of the other 2 wires to light up they dont . From what I understand this should point and indicate that my CMP is the problem. Yet I do not find any problems with the CMP and as I go to the CMP wire harness there is no power to light all 4 wires in the plug, am I to assume that its my ECU. Im so lost..

Thanks for the help

Ok I have taken out my ECU and smelled and snooped it good and found that the capacitors seem to have corroded my board here and there. Off to E-bay I go to see about getting another ECU see if that helps my problem....... :barf:
Thank

Sorry to hear it. We been trying to tell people for years that if they have original caps in their ECU's they need to replace them ASAP. On 1G ECU's you either have caps that have leaked or have caps that are going to leak, there isn't any other case. Make sure to check your replacement ECU.

It's also good to keep in mind that not all capacitor replacements are created equal. I see far too many cases where people burn the traces off the board by overheating them or try to solder to corroded copper. Any leaking electrolyte much be removed from the board or it will continue to eat away at the metals until the ECU stops working.
