After a 5500 stutterbox launch the other night, my car died. I fired her back up and she sounded like she had no oil in her and made a very loud valve tapping sounds. I detected the sound to becoming from the intake side of the head under the valve cover. After driving 75 miles home (still good) I pulled the valve cover off and verified my suspicions. I found a piece of black hard plastic UNDER my intake cam between the valve springs. The plastic was just floating around in the head and no doubt causing the loud lifter/valve tapping sound. After removing the plastic, the car fired up and the tapping is gone!

However, I have now triggered a CEL and have no time to check it right now. I lost the piece (go me  ) so I can't even take a picture of it. My suspicions are (being a 95 motor) that the CAS has broken. OMG

Anyone else know what would cause a piece of plastic to emerge in my head? Anyone have a picture of what a 95-96 CAS looks like?

did it look like a ring from under the cap of a quart of oil? I remember seeing a pic of someone who pulled their valve cover off due to a wierd noise after buying a dsm and they found that someone did an oil change without using a funnel and had just stuck the end of the quart of oil in the hole and upon pulling it out pulled the little bottom ring from the cap of the quart of oil off of the empty quart.

Just some food for thought.

It cant be the cas, because it is external to the head. It has to be something that someone has lost inside the engine.

That's what I was wondering. I've never had a 95-96 head before so I don't know how the CAS is mounted. I guess I'll poke around a little more tomorrow. I still need to verify compression, since I checked if my cam gears still aligned today.

The CAS is right behind the intake cam gear mounted with 2 bolts and as stated cannot get inside the head. It does, however, sound like the second reply as someone had forgot to pull the ring from an oil container, or somehow let a foriegn object fall in while filling with oil.

Maybe an aftermarket oil cap, or a filler funnel type of thing that broke off and fell in.

That's what I was wondering, but I have since replaced it with a new one so I can't even find the old one. Either way, I did a compression test after talking to Oldman (bruce) and we both suspect that I have a bent valve. My cyl 4 compression is at 105 OMG. I guess on to building a new head for next season :sneaky:
