Phil you're almost right. They had that fire, but remember the rules changed. They banned AWD cars in that class. Sean, at the time was more then a half of second faster then the closest car. He built the FWD car just to continue racing. The car was sold to a Maryland owner. It has been 10.30's with a 35r, from what I heard. it's a great looking car.

I would imagine it is. Never thought about that...... I think that started because Extreme started running fast and James Heck who did the list was a member of the Buschur Camp.:D

So, I forgot to write about the banning of the AWD.....honestly I forget anything that has to do with changing rules so Honda's can win races. It's just like Ferrari buying championships in F1. The sanctioning bodies didn't like seeing Honda's get beat that bad. Never had interest in Honda's as drag cars even though they were the early stars of import drag racing.

I remember how great it was to watch Sean whip the snot out of the Honda's.

I know who the Mirage was sold to first.....it was supposed to come out as an NA car....guess that never happend.

I wish I would have been old enough to be around when this all went down. I love reading the history.
Also, when did shep get the dark cherry talon he has now?

It was cool to be around for alot of this. But, at least you can learn about it here! Glad you are enjoying this.

Shep's black cherry talon was bought from Dave Buschur. From what I know, Dave was frustrated when he couldn't run better than 11.0 and sold the car to Shep and concentrated on his RWD 1G. The first recorded pass that I have with Shep in that car was on 9/18/98....it was an 11.23@127. So, I'd imagine he bought the car right before that. At that time, his own red '92 talon had gone 10.95 the year before.

I saw Sean Glazer run his Talon several times at the NOPI Virginia Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park on April 23rd and 24th of 2005. It was alive and well then!

In somewhat related news, I saw John Shepherd run at the 2004 and 2005 DSM Shootouts at Norwalk Raceway but I don't remember Sean Glazer being at either one.

Awesome information Phill!! It's interesting to see some of Sean's history. Seem like he was kinda getting out of the game when I was first getting into it (got my first DSM when I was 17 in 2004). I've always wanted to know more about him since he seemed to be way ahead of the game. Didn't he break into the 8's almost 2 years before shep? Standalone computers definitely made a huge difference. I think thats one of the reasons HKS272's were considered such a big cam back then. Oh and I think Sean hit that 8.63 in 2004? But correct me if i'm wrong.

oops just checked DSMtimes and it says Sean's 8.63 pass was on 4/24/2005. When does Curt Brown come into the picture?

Speaking of Shep, has anyone posted this yet? Thompson Dragway | Facebook
It looks like Sheps car is on the track again. It may not be past history, but it could be history in the making.

The part I'm most bummed about, is that I don't think there will be a vehicle that will have a chase to go fast like the dsm's. To me it seems like dsm's and the fox body mustang is what started the whole fast street car thing in the 90's. All the new platforms just seem to be instantly fast. There's no chase to go fast, they just instantly are fast. I'm sad that I missed out on the chance to be a part of it, no matter what platform. It is amazing to see where these cars have come from, 8 years ago when I started playing with mine, I would have been in the top 50ish with the times it runs now! I still have some of the issues of turbo with the red tsi they built up, and then the 2002ish one with Shep, Buschur, and Glazer on the cover. They also did a GVR4 build up in that one. That issue is what got me into DSM's, and Sheps car when it went 9.80's in that issue is the end goal for me.

Very nice...wish I got down to some of those races. I was at the '04 shootout myself....true, Extreme was not there.

We are getting old for sure....jeez it's been a real long time since Jack stopped running the Eclipse....

Thanks! Glad you're liking it all. I don't have ALL the info or ALL the details of everything, but I have a decent overview anyway. Yes, it was about 2 years time before Shep passed Sean. I have not seen dates on dsmtimes.org, i guess I'm blind:D So, I was right then, it was '05 when Sean went 8.63. Cool! Not too sure about Curt Brown, don't know him, never met him, so someone else will have to fill in the blanks. All that I know about him is what I've heard and read. As much as he has been talked about, and the things he's done, I don't think what he's done is extraordinary honestly....at least when compared with Sean or Shep.

Thanks. Glad to have you up here enjoying it! That is pretty funny.....considering I had the original Nintendo when I was a young teen:rocks:

There is a thread about Shep piloting AMS's GT-R and within that thread there was one photo most likely from that day at the strip. However, seeing a few new photos here...interesting that he now is running a larger rear tire than in front.....very slick........and the car looks unreal, sweet wheels........and the rear wing is very nice.

You may be right. True about alot of the newer cars. You really didn't miss out on the chance......I got my '90 car in '96 after the 1g's were out of production...but, I do wish I got my '90 new and started then.....so I see what you mean. I know the issue you mean, I have several copies, and several other issues as well with dsm coverage. 9.80s is a good goal to have. Single digits. I'm not sure what my end goal is. Hard to say. In the drag racing world 10's will probably do for me, but on one of a few small turbos.

Update: 10/10/97 Three weeks go by, and just like that the Extreme talon grabs another tenth to the 1/8 and 1/4:thumb:

Want to see pics. I love looking at all the old pics. Theres threads like this on honda-tech that i love. I always followed all imports racing in the late 90's early 2000's. Not cause they were honda boys, but just the personalities of the guys is why i always loved Rado and Papadakis. But looking at the old battle pics and things are AWESOME....more updates and i DEMAND pics!

I have a list from fall of 1995. Will send it to Phil for him to post up if he can. At the time only three DSMs in the US were in the 11's. Trying to find some of my lists from 1998-99 where my 2g finally was 11.54.

I was sent a link over to check out the first post. Good old stuff! Man there are a lot of memories on that list! I miss the old days a lot of times.

I'm only on the first page but wanted to respond to the post below. The part about Sean and I working together is only partly true. What really happened is this. The car ran a 10.60 I think at about 135 mph. We had the boost down as low and I said it was at 18 psi. Sean/Terry and I never got along. Sean was standing close by and we were on speaking terms. I could see he thought I was full of crap. I didn't own a video camera from what I remember. I told him something like this, "You don't believe it's 18 psi, go get your camera and mount out of your car and I'll let you put it in my car and see for yourself." So, Sean went and got his camera and roll bar mount, I let him put it in my car and he video taped the gauges, thinking I was surely lying! haha I made the next pass which was also a 10.6x and when I came back we reviewed the tape, 18 psi on the nose! He couldn't believe it. At that time that was the quickest/fastest 4g63 powered DSM. He had NOTHING to do with anything else on the car, especially the tuning. It was a video taping adventure only. The car was all messed up the day before we went the 10.6, that was the day with the heads-up races against Dave Shih's Honda from California. That day before we had put a 660cc injector in the car and it was so rich it wouldn't run. No chips for the VPC for that injector back then. During the car show that was on the other spectator side of the track my brother Dan and I were talking and remembered the last thing we had done was changed injectors. I don't know if any of you were there for that but we swapped back to 550's and took the car out onto the paved road in between what seemed like hundreds of people. I hit the line lock and the car lit the tires up, I did a huge burnout in between the rows of people lined up watching, it was GREAT! Everyone was cheering because the car finally ran right.

Man I have stories. I should write them all down sometime before I forget them.

Thanks for stirring up some great old memories!

    David

Shortly after the 11.05 my Talon broke again, sorry this is still from page 1. I busted the rear diff into pieces. I was so sick of breaking the car and it not shifting. I was already started on the RWD Talon at this point. I remember the "4Bangr" sitting in the parking lot in my driveway at home broke. John Shepherd at the time had a '92 Talon and I he wanted to go faster. I told him I was fed up and sick of breaking parts. I sold my Talon to him, which is his current Talon that went 7.70 for $16,000, with the broken rear diff in it. I am going to fast forward a bit. Extreme was running nitrous, which back then (and I still do) frown upon multiple power adders and most people back then gave them little respect because they used the bottle. Of course they had their followers, just pointing out the bottle. When I stopped running my car Tym Switzer and I were best friends and he was at my house helping me every night with the shop and I'd give him my old parts. His dad got involved and they built some tranny parts to get the car to shift. I left for a race in Kentucky with the Buicks and he called me that night, which I am sure is coming soon in the thread (as I am reading page 1 still) and told me he ran a 10.98 at 124.xx, making him (all BR powered) the first AWD DSM in the 10's without nitrous. Sean from Extreme did it the same night I believe on the bottle. Let me jump ahead more. John Shepherd bought my car, fixed the rear diff. He then did an alignment on it, which I had never done since I owned it. He told me it was WAY out of whack. The very first time he took the car to the track he ran a 10.72 at 131 mph and Sean was there, I believe it may have been at ATCO but can't remember. John had to take the inlet off the turbo and physically show the turbo to Sean because Sean called him a liar and told him there was no way possible a TD05H-20g could run those times or MPH. Man there was a LOT of drama back then!!!

HAHA, there it is! Yes, it was a week later! I was thinking it was the same night! Tym was the the first to break into the 10's, NO NITROUS. He was de-throned by Sean but Sean was on the bottle. A lot was changing at this point in time and shortly I am sure I am going to read in this thread about John's 10.72, which was also NO NITROUS.

Fuel management was starting to come around that was better than the VPC, although back then nothing would convince me of that. Bigger turbo's etc. Tym quit right after his 10.98 too, sold off all the stuff on the car and started a crazy build. Somewhere there is a video floating around of a build that took him about 2 years to complete, the car made something crazy on our 2wd Dynojet, around 900 whp if I remember right. The car in that form never made a successful pass and was sold.

The days of nitrous racing was on at that point in time. John, Sean, Brent all started hitting the bottle heavy (haha). That was the key to a lot of the speed and big MPH change that was taking place.

OK, did more reading and finished. Great thread but my memory of a lot of it is different. I see the list Sean is on is no nitrous, my memory is 100% certain that the first time he went 10's was on the bottle, from the looks of the list I am wrong but somehow I feel it either came out or there was a huge doubt of the facts because there was a bottle in the car or something. The scene was off the hook back then and who knows what was going on. History, according to the list is he did his off the bottle, so I will go with that;)

VPC and HKS272's. Both seem so old now. Fact is both have run killer times. The first 1g RWD ran 9.40's I believe on those parts. I then built the full tube chassis car and ran 7.81 at 174.8 mph with the VPC/GCC and HKS272 cams! Not sure how many of you remember it or saw it but the RWD Honda Civic we built with the 4G63 in it, that car is in Aruba now and went 7.61 at 175 mph on the HKS272's but has an AEM EMS in it I tuned, three years on that same engine now. The VPC ran the car so lean and no timing control that once the big power hit and the use of the bottle to get the torque converters to work, the runs were limited from blowing head gaskets.

I look at what I know now and give thoughts to building another RWD again, I can't imagine how fast and reliable it could be now, wow......

Thanks for stirring up some old memories.

If I still have the video of the RWD and in-car camera... I'll post it on Youtube. I know I could have cared less what boost the car was running, only that with no datalogging as everything was piggyback in that car..... you had no idea and were clueless as usual :tease:. I offered the use of my mount and the camera and all that I remember was that we got it in, tried to get a shot of the gauges.... and vibration took care of the rest. Solid mounted everything did it all in. Nothing usable as it was a blurry mess, yet made for some good controversy and conversations. So I guess you still are the only one to know how much boost it really ran:D

I remember running 10's the first time. Stock rod motor and it was also the first time I was not on the 20G. Atco if I recall?? We had tried some hybrid Mitsu/ Garrett turbos between my car and Jack's car and they were just not right at the time no real MPH gains but lag was bad. So I had received this "monster" Garrett T4 turbo from TEC..... damn the thing was huge, and was it going to work? Yup, 10's. Then the rod decided to exit the block. Twice. That began the hunt for 9's. As far as nitrous on those runs-- definitely no nitrous when the Talon went into the 10's. I didn't run nitrous until the following season or so if memory serves me right. You ran the VPC and to this day I still detest the thing, so my direction was the PMS. Just as you said, you look back now and all of it seems so antiquated and even a basic 2G MAS and an old school AFC would have been that much better. The last two passes with the PMS was at MIR and I was running with Peter Farrell--- the first pass was 10.66 and then from there the wonders of piggyback computers began to become a real problem... the more I ran the less it would run right. The following season I switched to a Haltech E6S and dealt with Arthur from Australia..... and that was the end of piggybacks forever. I remember calling so much to get it to work with their new box that I still remember their phone number. The worst part was when they were at lunch... and it was 3am here on the East coast. Now everything from DSMLink to stand alone systems simply kill everything we had tried. And on top of it all I broke away from the norm of the "big" 550 injectors and went to the "huge" injectors.... 750's. Good times and plenty of interesting ways we tried to make things work. Al & Sam with their hacked up flappered 1G MAF from hell also comes to mind....... I still thank God that no matter what that we had a Mitsubishi and not a Honda...

I do however remember running nitrous for the first time... a single nozzle 50-shot at Maple Grove. Not off the line but in 3rd gear--- I remember closing my eyes and hitting the switch and it was like Night Rider---- Turbo Boost! And then I never ran without it again, until the last NIRA event at Englishtown when they took my bottle and slicks away for the following year. With that, 9.53@153 I believe was my best non-nitrous run and that was on the original Nitto drag radials and the car had a lot of ballast weight in it as well.

I have to say, there were a lot of stories and back when the Talon Digest was the only thing.... things definitely got heated and waiting for the next one to be released.... that only fueled the fire. I think I may still have some stuff printed out.

Dave--- my turn for the next DSM Shootout controversy story.... was it innocence or spying...... and yes, just like back then, until the next post!

Holy sh**, Sean! Haha, never though he would chime in, Its been 15-16 years since I saw you and Jack at MIR, I worked for this guy Dave in Virginia at IPT, we got some clutches off you and your Dad. I had a Minden Silver GST, I think I bought my PMS off you guys too. I left and joined the Airforce, anyway.... Its funny to read these old stories from back in the day.

    Take care man,

    Gregg
