Ok! Sorry, had some housework going on over the last month or so and everything was packed away again. I got it all unpacked so I'll throw another one up. This is the time that the DSM world of drag racing gets good. As far as I'm concerned, this is the end for Dave Buschur as the top gun. He was the man for about 6 years being that his talon was a 1991 and he bought it new.

First remember that Dave B.'s current best ET was [email protected] with a [email protected] 1/8 mile.

On the same day as this list was updated, Dave ran the same ET exactly, 11.055, but with a 126.33 trap speed and a [email protected] 1/8 mile. This was at Norwalk. So, a marginal betterment. Unfortunately for him, that same day at another racers home track, Capitol, Maryland, ET's were dropping as well as you will see. Buschur's reign as quickest/fastest DSM ended on this day.

1. Sean Glazar [email protected] 6/06/97

2. Dave Buschur [email protected] 6/06/97

3. Jack Culotta [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

4. Tym Switzer [email protected] 5/28/97

5. Bill Lawrence [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

6. Marc Hallman [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

7. Dennis Smoyer [email protected] 3/01/96

8. Doug Derby [email protected] 6/07/97

9. Micheal Ferrara [email protected] 5/24/97

10. Albert L. [email protected] 7/20/96

11. Jeff Hill [email protected] 4/19/97

12. Andy Craft [email protected] 6/30/96

13. John Shepherd [email protected] 8/17/96

14. James Kaz [email protected] 5/26/95

15. Al Blaha [email protected] 11/15/96

16. Bob Hayworth [email protected] 11/10/96

17. Rober Toves [email protected] no date

18. Brent Rau [email protected] - with a 1.95 60' time! 5/11/97

19. Dejan Cokic [email protected] 5/16/97

20. Len Monserrat [email protected] 6/19/96

So, some notes: Doug Derby keeps droppin ET in the quickest 2G DSM to date, to 11.74!

-Dejan Cokic hits the list on this date with his 12.12 run from the DSM Shootout in Norwalk in May. For those who don't know he went on to make a name for himself as he had a single digit ET DSM pretty early in the going.....

.....I'll throw another one up later guys....enjoy!

Good stuff. I was still watching Power Rangers in '97.

Keep 'em coming DSM Historian.

Update 6/17/97:

Not too much changed for this one, but a couple cool updates.

1. Sean Glazar [email protected] 6/06/97

2. Dave Buschur [email protected] 6/06/97

3. Jack Culotta [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

4. Tym Switzer [email protected] 5/28/97

5. Bill Lawrence [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

6. Marc Hallman [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

7. Dennis Smoyer [email protected] 3/01/96

8. John Shepherd [email protected] 6/15/97 - Atco import event

9. Doug Derby [email protected] 6/07/97

10. Micheal Ferrara [email protected] 5/24/97

11. Albert L. [email protected] 7/20/96

12. Jeff Hill [email protected] 4/19/97

13. Andy Craft [email protected] 6/30/96

14. James Kaz [email protected] 5/26/95

15. Al Blaha [email protected] 11/15/96

16. Mike Hadley [email protected] 6/15/97 - Atco import event

17. Bob Hayworth [email protected] 11/10/96

18. Rober Toves [email protected] no date

19. Brent Rau [email protected] - with a 1.95 60' time! 5/11/97

20. Chris Tichy [email protected] 6/15/97 - Atco import event

Notes: John Shepherd drops to 11.59 from 11.89... 3 tenths, nice work there.

Mike Hadley(Extreme guy) and Chris Tichy(Buschur guy) enter the top 20 and drop "Big Len" Monserrat and Dan "Dejan" Cokic outside the top 20.

For anyone interested, Chris Tichy was another small turbo guy and was on the small 16G for this run and stayed on that turbo for the most part as you'll see in the future....He was a solid driver, very consistent.

At this time, the quickest 60' times I can see are Buschur and Switzer at 1.66!

In case I haven't mentioned it, #15. Al Blaha is the guy that gained some notoriety with his modifications to the 1G MAF's.......

More to come obviously.....:thumb:

Al Blaha sounds like the name of a villain in a James Bond movie, LOL.

If you get the time some pics would be awesome

pics of these guys back then? I have plenty, but all on paper. I have to get my scanner to work, or I will take some pics of the old pics with my digi cam. I will have to locate them though. They are packed away.

I remember Al Blaha. At this point he hit 11.9 on a 1G MAF? Not bad. I wonder how far he'll take it?

LOL Glad you posted up...sometimes when I don't see any replies I think noone has looked at the current update and I don't put another one up....

Yep. He went into the 10's on a 1G MAF, that was his claim to fame. How far I can't remember, but, hopefully I'll find it in my lists somewhere.

I've got quite a bit of info on DSM's. Tons of old magazines, mostly Turbo and Sport Compact. I have stuff from the 80's-early 90's, so once I was into DSM's in '96 I went back searching through all my mags back into the late 80's and found some cool stuff. I have been going through them and keeping certain issues or razor blading certain articles because I just have too many magazines. THOUSANDS. 30 years worth. I could have a 50 ft. bonfire in my backyard with nothing but magazines...wouldn't last long but it would be huge.:D

Wow! Them were the days. I been in and out of the game since the mid 90's. Just getting back into it. Seeing them names brings back lots of memories. I have a few pics of Bill Lawrence car on paper. I remember when he sold that car to Jeff Carpenter (whom I believe started Forced Peformance when it was in Tulsa Ok.) who was doing some "street tuning" which unfortanately took his and his wifes life when he wrecked the car. If my memory serves me correctly. I will look for the pics and scan some "old school" stuff for you guys.a

I love to see these kind of threads as this is when I was just getting into DSM's.

That's awesome man....nice to see you back into it. I truly believe there are tons of memories for all of us in the DSM world. Sure, Honda has a history in import drag racing as well. But, I just think the DSM history is so much more interesting. There is definitely a solid 15-16 years worth of it anyway. I find it very interesting...obviously. Correct, the late Jeff Carpenter did start Forced Performance. I met Jeff only once at the 1998 DSM Shootout. We were at the Econolodge in our room, and Bill Lawrence was there, as well as Sean Glazar and his father Terry along with several members of CCDSM-Connecticut Club DSM. We were watching in-car video of Sean running 10 second 1/4 miles. Jeff was a great guy and we had something in common, we were both running 14b turbos and he was a bit quicker than me at that point. He wanted to help me go faster and suggested I try his ported O2 dump and that I would gain for sure. I got one from him within months and with that piece I went from [email protected] best right down to [email protected] at the same boost. He wasn't kidding! I now have that piece on my VR4. It's a very significant piece to me. I still have emails printed that he sent me every time he went quicker on the 14b. He was a super nice guy and an inspiration for me when it came to my goals. He will never be forgotten, that's for sure.

6/29/97 - Ok, not much changed at this update, in fact, only two guys moved, and in the long run, one of these guys will go on to make the most significant moves in DSM history, of course, that would be John Shepherd. So, here it is:

1. Sean Glazar [email protected] 6/06/97

2. Dave Buschur [email protected] 6/06/97

3. Tym Switzer [email protected] 6/20/97

4. Jack Culotta [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

5. John Shepherd [email protected] 6/27/97

6. Bill Lawrence [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

7. Marc Hallman [email protected] 5/16/97 *At the DSM Shootout*

8. Dennis Smoyer [email protected] 3/01/96

9. Doug Derby [email protected] 6/07/97

10. Micheal Ferrara [email protected] 5/24/97

11. Albert L. [email protected] 7/20/96

12. Jeff Hill [email protected] 4/19/97

13. Andy Craft [email protected] 6/30/96

14. James Kaz [email protected] 5/26/95

15. Al Blaha [email protected] 11/15/96

16. Mike Hadley [email protected] 6/15/97 - Atco import event

17. Bob Hayworth [email protected] 11/10/96

18. Rober Toves [email protected] no date

19. Brent Rau [email protected] - with a 1.95 60' time! 5/11/97

20. Chris Tichy [email protected] 6/15/97 - Atco import event

Notes: Tym Switzer moves from 11.27 to 11.10, one tenth off the quickest pass ever by Extreme -- 11.00.

And, John Shep eeks out another couple tenths dropping from 11.59 to 11.38.

At this time the quickest 60' in print is Tym at 1.64 while the 11.00 pass by Sean of Extreme is a 1.69 second blast to the 60'.

I have updates on 8/03/97 and 8/25/97 with no changes in the top 20. What I can say is that a California DSMr, Todd Chiamparino hit the list at the 8/03/97 update, or came inside the top 50 at number 29 with a [email protected] pass. He will go on to be the most noteworthy west coast DSMr. Sorry Michael Ferrera. Darryl Hudson was number 43 with a [email protected] pass.

At the 8/25/97 update, James Heck, the guy that did all of these lists, was at #53 with at time of [email protected].

Only those that have been into DSM's for the better part of a decade will recognize some of these names most likely.

The next update is a turning point in DSM history....stay tuned....

I find this very interesting! What kind of setups (turbo, intercooler, engine management, etc) were the big dogs running back then?

At this time...the top cars were all on 20G turbos....most running HKS VPC's except for Sean at Extreme that, if my memory serves me right, was running the EFI Systems PMS, that noone else could seem to get to work.

All other cars, if not running 20g's were running small 16g's. Several guys were running high 11's on the 16g, Shep was one of them, but was on the 20g buy now........intercoolers were the Spearco cores for the most part, just like Buschur's kits. I think Extreme also ran Spearco cores.....

.....crazy huh?

I just found this thread for the first time and it's interesting seeing as I couldn't even legally drive for another 7 years. That being said, it's cool to see the progression of DSM's since I obviously wasn't seriously into them when this was all happening. Keep the lists coming.

ROFL crazy kids

Phil, I need more updates.

And again.....I guess I just find it funny. You haven't said anything about any of the content like everyone else. What you like, what you think is amazing for the era, etc., etc. You just keep saying "update."

And your last one here with the word "need" makes it sound like you need a fix or something:D

Are you alright?LOL

Dam! Sean Glazer and David Buschur are so close together! Just 0.049 seconds apart, but Buschur has lower mph, so he's the better driver at this point.

Was Tym Switzer working for Buschur at that time? I know he worked for Buschur for several years. He's right there at #3. It's like the Buschur crew is chasing Extreme!

I can't wait to see what Todd Chiamparino does. I'm a West coast guy too.

Yep, they are close together, and true, at that point Buschur had more track experience on the DSM and otherwise........but, for Glazar, practice makes perfect.....

As far as I know, at this time Switzer was working for Buschur.....

Chiamparino was the only name worth talking about in a DSM conversation from the west coast........Bergenholtz, Fuchs, Papadakis, Bautista, etc. were the import drag racing names that were known the country over from Cali.....all Honda boys.......you can throw Adam Saruwatari in there too with his RX7. Cali is and will always be a Honda dominated area......nothing wrong with that....but, it took a while for the DSM's to catch on I guess......

I'm noticing a trend here....

see what I mean......

and again.....

Yeah, thanks for calling me out Phil. It's great informtion and a great thread. I didn't get into the dsm's and import untill 2000, as I just turned 16 and I was able to drive. Sean was the fastest with a 9.16 or 9.18 ET. Both him and Rau were very close in times. Honda's were miles away and were fully gutted with fiberglass front ends. My 1st DSM didn't happen for me until I was 18. I mostly post on my blackberry now in days, as I work alot. So keep the updates coming. It's like a drug, as im interested in the progression in dsm history. So give me my fix already, LOL.
