DSM 1/4 mile time lists of old...

Lightweight tube frame car with undersized tubing vs a factory chassis car is two different worlds. You could continue talking about that if you would like. Your ramblings are definitely amusing.

My rambling is as amusing, as your attempt to sound important on this forum. Dave's Evo has run 8's. He has been in the 7's years ago. His toy car and, full street car by the way. Runs 9.0's on D.O.T drag radials. If you know this to be true, as I do. Say something that relevent to the conversation. I guess Shep's car is a full weight talon, LOL? The rear floor section of shep's car was cut out when he was running the Drag Radial class. Let's not pretend that he was driving a 3100 pound car and running 7.70's @ 190. Curious of what you think of Shep's talon now, LOL. Do you repect his car less, since he re-did it? You should know better. All that was said is, that Dave has the experience to build a fast car. If anyone could build a faster car then Shep's car, it'd be Dave. Not that Dave has any plans to do so. Just continue to disagree without valid point's. Sarcasm get's you nothing aswell, but hey atleast you made me laugh troll.

Whelp, again the thread has taken a bit of an off course. I didn't mind these guys coming here to talk.....I mean Dave and Sean. I thought is was pretty cool that they did. But all the other BS sucks.

So, BACK ON TOPIC AGAIN......kinda......

I'm in the middle of a move over the next month and my lists have been packed away until then. So, next update will be at the end of February most likely. However, that doesn't mean some talk about this stuff can't take place. I know the lists are the fun part...

Anyway, I'd really like to see Dave and Sean, and whomever else was into this early, Hallman, etc., tell some war stories about what it took to pull down their ET's in the mid 90's when this was all on the uprise.

OPEN FORUM.

But, keep your personal crap elsewhere please. You people know who you are.

Phil

Just read this thread from start to finish and all I can say is: Why wasn't I born 10 years earlier!

Thank you to everyone who has helped make DSM's what they are today.

Awesome read

Glad you're enjoying it. Nothing like visiting where these cars came from.:thumb:

I wish I was in the DSM game back then. These cars were so popular it seems.

I hear you man. Honestly, I actually think I was a bit late jumping in the mix in 1996. It's all relative I guess...

I just happen to be one that always catalogs everything I've been into with stats and pics.....

Whats the update as of 2011?

Actually, that's viewable as dsmtimes.org. My run of lists probably only comes up as late as 2003....maybe not even that late. I'll add as much as I can and try to make this last a bit.....

Wow, it was pretty stagnate for about 6 months there but that last update is more like it. I guess the Shep/Glazer 1st place swapping started back in 1998. When I got in the scene '03-'05 they were swapping back and forth every weekend it seemed. It's clear who came out on top in the end, but that was some exciting drag racing! Keep this thread up Phil, we want ALL the info you have in your little white binder!

It was...busy year for me in many ways. 1998 was a pivotal year. It's one of two shootouts I've ever been to and it was great.

Don't worry....I'll eventually post everything I have up. Well, I have boxes filled with the "rest" of all of these lists. Obviously, I'm only posting the first page.

Lots of familiar names on those lists.

It's weird to see Brent Rau at #20. I can remember when his car was still AWD.

Yeah, honestly, he was a bit late to the party, however, made up ground unbelievably. His car ran 11.11 best I think before he went big. I purchased the American Racing wheels he had on his car when it was still a street machine.

Wow just read this whole thread just amazing what these cars have came from.To op thank you very much for this thread!

Welcome! I figured this stuff would appeal to quite a few out there:thumb:

Phil,
Do you have the slip where Shep first purchased the 4bangr? If so, see if it lists the track on it...does it say Dragway 42 in West Salem Ohio? I think it is later than the last slip you posted a picture of. I always thought Dave ran his 11.0's in the thing, then sold it to Shep and he ran 10's after small changes? Either way the first time I ever went to a Drag strip (Dragway42) was the night Shep first ran the 4bangr after buying it from Dave Buschur. I remember it because Buschur, Tym Switzer, Shepherd, Kevin Lawson, and Mark Hallman were all there. If I remember right he ran one or two ten second passes, and then the oil filter o ring blew off and he had to stop (don't think anything blew up). I have been hooked on these cars ever since!

I would imagine I do.....I'll check it out for sure. Yeah, it wasn't long before Shep was at 10.7's.....

....cool story......those damn O rings:notgood:

Sorry I don't have anything useful to contribute, but I just wanted to say that I love this thread.

:thumb:

Phil, keep the timeslip updates coming! Always nice to go down memory lane, as I thoroughly enjoy seeing the history in the racing scene in the 90's for the DSM world. Back then, I was into RX-7's, and I didn't get into the DSM world until 2001, and ALOT had already been accomplished in our community. I only hope that the community continues to advance forward with this dying platform with the technological advancements now available for years to come!

As for Dave thread-jacking, he can make his own thread to discuss his new DSM project. Everyone else can respond in that. Let's keep this thread on topic.

Will do...there will be a delay however as I'm in the middle of a move and my info is packed.

Best Thread ever.

"Legends never die"

That's a nice compliment.......glad you like:hellyeah:

Great stuff thanks for the memories ..I was into rotaries since the 80's on the west coast( 79 rx7 with nos.in '95) I remember when the awd dsm hit the scene blowing me away with min. Mods and a set of greendots .

This is fun looking back on the good old days back in the mid to late 90's. I bought my first DSM, a 1991 Talon AWD in the spring of 1997. I remember specifically buying an automatic because I wanted to drag race it and I didn't want any lag between gears. After a few mods getting into the low 14's, I couldn't find any real parts for the auto so I started looking for a 5-speed. At the time, I met a guy older than me at the track driving a dark blue 1992 GSX named Rick Shindley. He was hanging around Brent Rau so I met him at this time as well. They used to street race each other and Rick would get the jump on Brent but Brent would reel him in when his "big" turbo finally got spooled up. :) Rick's car had a 20G, Spearco FMIC, VPC, 550's and a 3" exhaust with an 02 dump. At the track with Brent driving, it ran a 12.02 in 1998.

I was sick of my Talon by that time and Rick had mentioned getting out of the DSM game. I wanted it in the worst way, but I was dealing with some marital issues at the time and it wasn't in the cards. Forward to 1999, just got my divorce and had a little extra money in my pocket. Called Rick up, asked if he still had the car, and brought a cashier's check up there that day and drove it home. This car was really built for that time period, Koni yellows, springs, shortened rear control arms, full poly bushing kit, and those cool polished BR strut tower bars. I went out to my first shootout that year and met a lot of the guys including Tom Stangl, the guy that started and runs the VFAQ page. Those were cool times, I couldn't wait to get my Turbo magazine every month to see what Sean, Brent, David and the others were running, as well as seeing what new parts Project Talon had broken that month. I've got a a lot of those old magazines still and thumbing through them these days is funny at best. It's unbelieveable how far we've come since then.

I still have that blue GSX, I've only ever seen one other one in the same color. I've built it to hell and back making 600whp and never running faster than 11.9x, I failed. :D After having a ton of problems with it and my F350 tow rig at the shootout 4-5 years ago, I came home, parted out all the hi-po stuff, and made a basic 16g car out of it that I actually don't mind driving anymore. It's still been sitting quite a bit over the last few years, but I have a renewed interest in it now and I'm starting to build it up again as a fun, full weight street car. I think it's time to actually drive it back to the shootout this year for the 20th anniversary. I think we need the remaining clean 1G's to feel some love at the SO.

Good story! It's definitely been a great time the last 20+ years I've been doing this. The Shootout will be the place to be this year, it's never failed to grow. I hope you make it out!

This is a great story and I can tell you still have the heart of a true DSMr:thumb:

Can you post a pic of your car? I'd like to see it!

haha, NOT EVEN 10's!

I went 10's for the first time EVER in an AWD was 2010 in my RS, ran a high 10 in it. I tried again last year at the Shootout and ran a 10.20, both on street tires after the autocross. It was a pretty big deal for me, I gave up trying when I sold the Talon to Shepherd back in '96.

Shoot, thought it said 10 something. I was tired last night when I seen this.

For some reason that surprises me, though. Whether it be 10's or 11's. I guess it is because to me you are like Michael Jordan or Tom Brady or something. I look up to ya.

10's is still pretty fast to me. I am going to the track tomorrow which is the first time ever for me on a drag strip (race dirt ovals). It's an 1/8 mile so MAYBE I will run 10's =P

And I was there at the shootout in 2010. Loved every minute of it.

Subscribed. I turned 16 in 2004. I experienced my first DSM then, a 2gb Spyder turbo. I was in love. I got very close to getting a 2ga GSX in 2005, but it had been vandalized, badly. All the windows were broken, the hood was smashed, seats were cut, and it was in blocks. Looked like a crazy ex or something. I needed something I could turn key at the time, not a project. I let the DSM go for the time being. In early 2010, I wanted to get into import drag racing, did my research, and decided I wanted a 1g, preferably a 1ga. I looked for six months, before I found the one in my pic. That was in October of 2010. I haven't looked back since.

Thank you, appreciate that! I was so disgusted with breaking my AWD DSM back in '96 I sold it to Shepherd. I gave up on the AWD stuff for many years and we built the first RWD Talon, the '92 body and ran 9.4's in that. Then the tube chassis '95 Talon and ran 7.80's in that, the Conquest that ran 8.50's and of course the tube chassis Honda that has gone 7.50's. I drove all of those at one point or another. We built that 1991 AWD orange AWD (Daryl Hudson's car now) and it ran 9.80's but I had zero interest in trying to shift a 5 speed again and we put my brother Dan in it first and then Kevin, who ran the 9's. Ever since then I've thrown Kevin or Trent in the car 5 speed cars we've built and they drive them, well with the exception of our Black EVO that Dan drove to 8.80's at 172 mph.

This ^^^^ was THE car that changed the way I looked at DSMs forever! I'll never forget that day.... The day I snapped this picture. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=105794&d=1264902943

It was my first Shootout and I had just arrived at the track. I got out of my car and started walking towards the track. I heard the announcer tell everyone about the car getting ready to run and to get ready for David Buschur's Talon. I ran to the fence just in time to see the car launch and motor down the track in 9.x seconds. It was amazing and I was instantly hooked and I've been attending the Shootout ever since.:D

Wow, I had no idea. Nice picture, not a lot of those floating around, I don't even have many. That's a great story, thank you!

Thank YOU Dave for all the great times over the years! I have been wanting you to autograph it for several years now, but I never can find the right time to approach you... You're always so busy. I had it with me at the Sport Compact race this year and just as I was going to walk up to you someone else stepped in to talk to you in your one idle moment, so again I didn't want to bother you.:coy: However, I will be taking a moment of your time sometime during the Shootout this year to finally get it signed, so hopefully that's okay with you.:)

Of course, please do. I signed some huge fancy Nike last year! haha Thanks again.
