Hey all--finally found my old 1/4 mile time lists! I was going to put this info in the history thread, but, it seems that thread is buried a bit. So, I figure this thread can be devoted solely to the times and discussion about them. Some of the lists are only page 1, as in maybe about the top 25 or so cars. Some of the lists are as many as 19 pages long. For the purposes of this thread I will post the top 20 or so cars and maybe list some notables that are further down the list to establish a progression for certain key players. The oldest list in print that I have was updated on 12/23/96. These lists were put together by DSMr James Heck and they were pretty thorough as they included track locations and actually dates of when the runs took place. So, I'll start with my oldest one, again, from 12/23/96 and post one up every few days or so. Hope you all enjoy this trip down memory lane, or learning and seeing the progression of DSM's in the drag racing world.

As of 12/23/96

1. Dave Buschur [email protected] 7/12/96

2. Dennis Smoyer [email protected] 3/1/96

3. Sean Glazar [email protected] 11/17/96

4. Bill Lawrence [email protected] 6/7/96

5. Tym Switzer [email protected] 11/3/96

6. Albert L. [email protected] 7/20/96

7. Jeff Hill [email protected] 4/19/96

8. Andy Craft [email protected] 6/30/96

9. John Shepherd [email protected] 8/17/96

10. James Kaz [email protected] 5/26/95

11. Al Blaha [email protected] 11/15/96

12. Marc Hallman [email protected] 6/23/96

13. Bob Hayworth [email protected] 11/10/96

14. Micheal Ferrara [email protected] 5/18/96

15. Rober Toves [email protected]

16. Len Monserrat [email protected] 6/19/96

17. Philip Long no 1/4 ET present- on list for 1/8...

18. Jim Palczynski [email protected] 5/17/96

19. Doug Derby [email protected] 11/17/96

20. Ken Krejei [email protected] 5/24/96

So, that's the list. I think 1-8 are all running 20g turbos. Shep's number on this list I'm fairly certain is on the small 16g if I remember correctly. #14 was Turbo Magazine's "Project Talon" for many years......as Mike worked for them, and now has DSPORT mag. #20 was the quickest 2G for most of that year, until #19 Doug Derby(Doug's Dynopower) came out with his 2G effort to just edge Ken. Cool stuff. I'm sure many up here recognize these names.

At the end of 1996, I had only made three passes in my at the time bone stock talon with a best time of [email protected]. I was a bit behind the curve but I'm glad I got into this when I did. Dave B.'s number above was one week after the EIP Shootout at MIR 7/4/96, the event that got me hooked on these cars and drag racing. Dave also ran 11.1 I think at that 7/4/96 event the week before.

Nice :thumb: I guess I'll subscribe to another one of these threads you're involved with Phil LOL I really enjoy the history behind these cars and you seem to know it as well as anyone, so thanks for sharing what you know with the rest of us. I was just getting involved with DSM's myself in 1996 and I think my best at that time was a low 14 at a little over 100 with my 90 fwd I had at the time. I really didn't get the bug hardcore till the following year when I first attended Dave Buschur's DSM Shootout and saw him run his yellow rwd converted Talon. Anyway, thanks for another interesting thread Phil and here's a picture of Daves Talon at the 1997 DSM Shootout when I became hooked.

Cool, man, glad you decided to subscribe! No prob, I like to come up here and at least throw some stuff up here, obviously, veteran DSMr's know much/all of this info but I'd be willing to bet not many, if any, printed as many updates to the 1/4 mile list as I did between '96-'00. And, of course, as you have, I'd really like to see some people add there own experiences. Especially from the Shootouts as I have only attended them back in 1998 when our club CCDSM was at it's height, and in 2004. I was't able to enjoy that one so much as I had an ear infection that reached it's height on the drive out:barf:That sucked.ROFL

Just a note for you: Your above pic of Dave's RWD, thanks for sharing first, but, it must be the '99 Shootout. Reason I say, is that I was at the '98 Shootout, and that's when the car was still flat black, and made its first 10 second passes, a best of 10.6. Believe it or not, it was with the tuning help of Sean Glazar of Extreme Motorsports. It was the first time, that I know of, where Sean and Dave were civil after alot of mud-slinging on the internet.

Ok, let's keep this going.....I'm one that likes riding down memory lane and remembering the roots of the DSM drag racing craze and outright domination the DSM's were exibiting during certain times.

Its like going back in time...ahhh the good ole days.

I know isn't it great? The DSM's are unfortunately in the shadows of the EVO in many ways these days, so looking back on what they have accomplished and represented is awesome....:thumb:

Blast from the past!

You know Phil, I kind of questioned myself as to whether or not that was correct. I knew that if it wasn't you would let me know. LOL Sorry to tarnish the memories with bad information :ohdamn: and thank you for correcting me.:coy:

Not a big dealLOL

Once I get a scanner set up I'll upload some of my old photos for sure. Wish I had a digi cam back then!

With that, here's the next list I printed, updated, 03/30/97:

1. Dave Buschur [email protected] 7/12/96

2. Sean Glazar [email protected] 3/30/97

3. Bill Lawrence [email protected] 2/16/97

4. Dennis Smoyer [email protected] 3/01/96

5. Tym Switzer [email protected] 11/3/96

6. Albert L. [email protected] 7/20/96

19. Doug Derby [email protected] 11/17/96

20. Ken Krejei [email protected] 5/24/96

So, Bill Lawrence drops ET from 11.61 to 11.58 to move ahead of Dennis Smoyer, and Sean Glazar drops ET from 11.60 to 11.48 and with that moves ahead of both Bill and Dennis to move into overall spot #2.

My personal notes: Here comes Extreme! Buschur Camp Beware!

Amazing to see how far these cars have come...

It is amazing for sure. I just looked over all my lists, up to about October 2001 and they tell an amazing story for sure. Eventually I'll have them all up here, except for ones where there are no changes in the top 20. I don't know when James Heck started his list on the internet, but, at least I have starting at the end of 1996 which really seems to be the year that this DSM craze really kicked into high gear.

And to think your current time with the 14b puts you in the top three on those lists! Shows how far dsms have come doesn't it! Thanks for sharing this old stuff Phil, it's really neat to see the progression. When I got into the dsm world it was all about Shep, Glazar was on the downside and alot of the other big names were kind of getting out of it. It's neat to see what the first "big name guys" were doing.

Todd Day started the talon digest right? What kind of times was he running?

I know, it's crazy, my 1/8 beats alot of them!

No prob, I figured at least some people would be interested.

Yeah, alot happend before Shep took the top spot and ran with it. In in a nutshell, Extreme really came HARD. They made over 1000 HP at the wheels a LONG time ago. There was a point where Extreme had to go to the AWD dyno because in FWD the talon would just light the tires up on the dyno around 780 HP! Shep was always hanging around pretty strong, but then Sean and Brent were low 9's and Sean broke into the 8's and noone was even close. Don't want to get too far ahead here though....I'll add some blurbs as I go.

Yes, Todd Day did the digest. I really didn't take part in that. Not sure what he ran, I don't see him near the top of any list. I'll look through one of my lists where I printed every page and see if I can find him anywhere. We went back and forth about something at one time and I remember him making a comment about my anthracite gray wheels...I had them powdercoated...something about it "looks like you're riding around on spares." Funny thing is, that was 1997 or so, and NOW look at how many people run DARK wheels. I got the idea from a couple of Mercedes' that were on the cover of European Car Magazine. Remember, I was into the VW's before I got hooked on the DSM's. So, that's my rememberance of Todd Day. I've always tried to be a trendsetter, a leader not a follower, different, etc. Some people just don't appreciate it apparently.

Ok, back at it.....list update from 05/05/97:

So, what's changed:

-Dave B. hits 11.0 but Sean G. closes it up a bit with a 11.20 pass
-same day as Sean G., Jack Culotta hits the list with an 11.31
-Sean G. has the highest trap speed on the list at 127.21
-now EXTREME cars occupy two of the top three spots on the list
-Marc Hallman dropped a couple of tenths
-Jeff Hill runs just a hare quicker and adds some trap speed
-as far as I can see the best 60' in print is 1.62 by Philip Long

Jack Culotta, #3 on the list runs a bit quicker, [email protected], bettering his 11.316, but stays at #3. Bill Lawrence at #4 on the list runs a bit quicker, [email protected], bettering his 11.587 pass, but stays at #4. The rest of the list is unchanged from the last update. All others in the top 20 remain the same as the last update.

20. Philip Long no 1/4 ET present- on list for 1/8...7.79 1/8

Alot happend in a couple of weeks, that's for sure. The DSM drag racing world HEATS UP as of the 1997 DSM Shootout!

Jack Culotta drops ET from 11.29 best to 11.25 at the DSM Shootout, defeats Dave Buschur and wins the event. Extreme Motorsports is on the move, with a quickness.

Tym Switzer jumps .33 from 11.64 to 11.31, pretty huge...

Bill Lawrence keeps edging his personal best- 11.55 = 11.54

Marc Hallman on the move dropping to 11.54 from 11.77

Doug Derby hits the top ten, drops from 12.27 to 11.85 and becomes the first 2G DSM in the 11's!

Brent Rau hits the list for the first time and lands inside the top 20!

To date the quickest DSM ET is still Dave Buschur at 11.055, but it's not going to last long...

Thanks for another update Phil:thumb: Amazing that Rau has just emerged on the list at this time. He and Shep were pretty far down on the list as well at this point. It's hard to believe how far they stepped it up in their quest for total dsm domination. Very interesting information as always. Thanks:)

Anytime.....I will update as much as I can on a regular schedule. It is crazy that it took Brent a while to get up there. He may have been alot further down on the list but I wouldn't know only because I only printed the first page after a while, there were so many pages. I'm sure I have additional pages to some, but I put the first pages in a 3 ring binder and put the remaining pages in a box somewhere that I have yet to find. I think I was actually in the top 100 at some point long ago.

Anyway, from here on out there is alot of action and John Shep emerges pretty quickly as one of the top guns, as does Brent, Garry Marsh, Dejan Cokic, and others. It gets real exciting from now until the first 8 second pass....

Definately update, this is some cool shiat!!! :thumb:

The funniest part of that list is how quickly and easily stock turbo EVOs were running similar numbers when they finally came to the US. And yet so many EVO owners are so oblivious to how far DSMers paved the way for them. If there were no DSMs pushing the limits of the 4G63 for over a decade before the EVOs came here, they'd probably just now be breaking into the 10s and they'd consider 25psi to be "high boost".

No doubt about it, no one in Japan was trying to build a drag car out of any of their 4g63 tuner shops. Americans pushed the limits of this engine package and continue to this day. I never thought we would see something like Sheppard is doing. I was also amazed when I saw dave's 2g RWD talon for the first time.
