Well if no one else is going to, I guess I might as well bump this thread for updates! It wasn't until August 2007 that I got into dsm's but I can't really see myself getting out of them since. The passion, loyalty, and respect in the dsm community is bar none to any other make out there of which I am proud to be a member of. Seeing as how I got into the game when everyone was getting out of it, I have never had the opportunity to see national recognition of the dsm community because we were put on the back burner in 03 from the evo. I love this history lesson even if I wasn't 16 until 04. Thanks Phil.

It all kinda makes me want a 20g now so I could see how far we have come since then. I guess English Racing is a good example. IDK

Yep, for sure...it was the rapid prograssion era. It seems now that the progression is much slower all the way around. I mean, there still aren't that many people that have run quicker than Glazar's 8.63. Hell, he went 8.87 back in 2001. And, maybe except for Kevin K's FWD, there's noone anywhere near Sheps 7.70 and that's going back what, 3 years now?

Hey, thanks for bringing it back to the forefront! I'm guessing that there aren't a ton of people interested in this thread. For me, anything I'm into, I want to know where it came from and how it became what it is. So, I love this stuff. As stated elsewhere I got into this in July of 1996, so almost 6.5 years or so after the 1990 DSM's hit showroom floors. So, I've tried to learn as much as I can about the goings on in the DSM community before I got into it...and, I'm glad that I was able to be part of it all since then. As I was getting into it, Extreme had opened their first shop. And now amazingly, I'm still into it, and they are no longer in business. Too bad.

On another note, your age is not a factor at all, in fact, I think it's awesome that you are interested in this information and am glad that there are others out there like me. Many younger people I meet in my other hobbies(just got back into BMX Freestyle after 21 years)have no idea of the history or where it all started, and some of them even think the trends along the way were, "stupid." That's totally ok, but it's more of them making statements like that purely because it is not of interest.

Glad you're enjoying all this and I will reward that with another update later this evening. I appreciate that you appreciate what I've documented over the years. It's great to share it with interested parties rather than have it sit in my 3 ring binders collecting dust!

Yeah you're right, there really aren't that many that have surpassed Sean Glazar let alone Shep even today with all the advancements in turbo technology. And I believe Shep's 7.70 was actually 4 years ago now. Thanks again and I will be looking forward to another update. I am going to look for some more pictures from this era to scan so I can post them up on here to go along with your updates. I've got a bunch somewhere if I can just find them.

That article was from back when I was first getting into DSM drag racing. I bought my DSM in 2003 and got big into the racing aspect in 2004. That was when Glazer and Shepherd were battling for the Fastest DSM title. It was a close fight and keep changing back and forth but then Shep broke into the 7's and Glazers DSM just kind of disappeared. Extreme starting moving to the EVO's and then so did Shep. I'm still dreaming of the return of Shep's Talon. He has said that it will be back on the track but it just seems like it's been forever.

For me, anything I'm into, I want to know where it came from and how it became what it is. So, I love this stuff. Definately interested in this thread! I too started a bit later but love reading about the history and seeing where things went! I laugh when new people join the local forum or something and don't even know who John Shepherd is, much less Glazar, Switzer, or any of the "old timers". I've never thought about the fact that Glazar's 8.63 was run so long ago and very few people have topped even that! That's partly what I enjoy about running the 14b and watching others on small simple setups, in many ways I think we've overcomplicated things recently with new technology. I'll also be eagerly awaiting some more updates in this thread.

Yep, It's taken a long time for some to be able to match and beat Extreme's number. After the first couple of 8 second passes from Extreme, 8.87 backed up with an 8.90 at Maple Grove, there was at a minimum, one year, but I think it was almost 2 years before Shep surpassed them. Then they came back out at the local strip in Crofton MD, Capitol, and ran the 8.63 pass and then it stopped there. So, other than Shep in the 7's there was noone in the ball park until the latest handful of guys surpassed them within the last year or so. Definitely find some shots. When I find mine I will start to leak them out up here. Time just isn't on my side lately!

In a nutshell, yes, but what really gave Shep the edge is that after the 8.87 record pass by Extreme, Sean had interest in running a tube chassis car, which was a Hyundai Scoupe with 4G power. It was a sick car but ended up hitting the wall I at the strip I think and that was the end of that. The point is that during that couple of years, Sean lost touch with the Talon and Shep was all by himself going for it. Sean also campaigned a FWD Mirage that went 9.7's or so---this also taking alot of time away from the Talon. Had Sean Glazar stayed with the Talon all along......I think two or three things may be different today in the DSM world.

#1 Extreme Motorsports might still be in business

But more importantly, #2 There might be two 7 second AWD DSM's

#3 There would have been a friendly rivalry between THE TWO BADDEST DSM'S OF ALL TIME, that we would have been able to watch at the local import events. But, I guess it wasn't supposed to go down like that.

Last tidbit as I'm now typing things that could be posted in the history thread, but, I guess are valid here as well:

The above just goes to show how FAR AHEAD of the game Extreme and Shep were.....

I don't know why I didn't choose to do this before, but, I can now let everyone see what the lists looked like. Some up here obviously will recognize the lists. These listswere done by a dsmr named James Heck.

BIG news this update!, Tym Switzer jumps from #3 on the list with an 11.10 to #1 with THE FIRST DSM 1/4 MILE PASS IN THE 10'S! He ran a killer 1.57 60' time and as far as I can see that is the first 1.5 second 60' ON THE LIST as well. History has been made on 8/29/97!

Also, noteworthy this time around, Jeff Hill drops his 11.86 to an 11.74 effort.

To me, this might be the largest turning point in DSM HISTORY. This is the time when all the potential players got serious and started to turn up the wick, as well as thinking outside the box of what was normal for DSM modification. We now start to see FULL RACE DSM's which to some was not accepted well. Most guys were FULL STREET TRIM guys and that was great for sure, that's how the cars received such notoriety as no other import cars could run that fast without at minimum switching to slick tires.

So, let the fun begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is correct! Many of the first 10 second passes came on 20G turbos. I would like to run one someday as well. Alot of people have moved on to other turbos b/c they are cheaper or whatever, but, I think the 20G turbo was the beginning of making big power with the 4G63 and holds a solid place in the history of our cars' improvement down the 1/4 mile.

After being the first DSM in the 10's, after only one week, Tym Switzer is dethroned of the top spot by Sean Glazar of Extreme Motorsports. With a slower 60' and 1/8 mile, Sean is still able to run a tenth quicker but with BIG MPH. No question who was making the most power out of the 4G63 early on in the game here. John Shepherd improved his 11.243 a tad with an 11.225 effort.

Extreme never looked back from here until the time when they weren't running the talon anymore.

Without a doubt, he did. I think he is the biggest story in DSM Drag Race history. He was the first to step outside the box and use tuning tools such as the EFI Systems PMS while others stayed on the HKS VPC. The HKS VPC while a decent piece, was a roadblock for going any faster in this time period. Sean had great aptitude for learning and understanding the "other" systems that had far more capability and immediately, he was making more power and running quicker than ALL of the fast guys before him......all Buschur Racing guys. Sean was a self-made tuner and got very good at it...

Most definitely. For the record, I don't include Buschur's RWD 1G in any of this at all. Sean was first to 130, 140, and 150 mph markers. On 10/08/00 Sean ran 157 mph......Ten years ago!

Honestly, they didn't give up on the talon(at least not initially).....it caught fire at a race and that was a big roadblock.....the car had to be fully dissassembled, sent out to be alkaline dipped, fully repainted, and re-assembled. And it wasn't that simple. The Brake Man brakes(which were set up for DSM's with Extreme's help BTW)had to be sent out for rebuild amongst many other things. While the talon was down at that time.....they campaigned the Mirage. The car went 9.50's almost right out of the gate, but, wasn't immediately competitive with the fastest Honda's out there....so back to the talon. This is when John Shepherd started to creep up. But, in my opinion, the real setback was when Sean wanted to run the Pro Class and started campaigning the 4G63 powered tube chassis Hyundai Scoupe(2003-2004.) I think this is what really stunted the progression of the talon. I'm not at liberty to talk money here, but anyone that's been around this stuff knows what it takes to not only build one of these cars, but to campaign it in a series as well. STUPID, that's the word that comes to mind. What I'm saying, and I'm speculating here, not quoting, but, lots of money, time, and energy went into the tube car and to my knowledge the end result was not alot of success and contact with the wall that caused the car to burn. Also, keep in mind that Sean did come back out with the Talon and ran 8.63 which was definitely quick. I hear guys(Showdown) today talking about how they beat Seans 8.63.....so it must have been a big deal. To date there are only five AWD and two FWD cars quicker than Extreme---so even now they are still at the top. And for the record Showdown edged Sean's time by less than 1/100th.

The last thing I want to add in reference to all this: time needs to be considered here. There are plenty of guys running single digit ET's in DSM's these days, and no doubt it's impressive, no doubt a fast car is a fast car. But, Extreme was knocking on 8's door TEN years ago, and hit 8 seconds 9.5 years back. If in fact Sean had continued straight through without interruption, I feel that he would have been into the 7's about 2 years before Shep. In Shep's favor it has already been over four years since Shep went 7.70---11/10/06

I think he finally just got tired of doing what he was doing and decided to call it quits.

See above. Honestly, since DSMtimes.org doesn't have dates on the list I'm not sure when the talon ran last. I'm gonna say it was 2005-2006 when it ran 8.63. It was at the local track in Crofton, MD. Capitol Raceway. I'll see if I can figure that out...

Is that the first time a timeslip was required as proof? The header is broken up, but it seems to be asking for a timeslip to verify a record setting time.
