CrackedDSM's boring new project (420a)

A 1995 Eagle Talon ESI that I bought for damn near free, that I want to fully rebuild/get running again and use it as a super boring, slow daily driver.

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Every time I touch this thing I find more things I don't have, that you cannot find or buy.

Don't have transmission to engine bolts, and don't have the flexplate to clutch and flexplate to crankshaft bolts.

Not to mention various other fasteners I'll need for mounts, and everything else. The scope of this project is starting to set in. I need to befriend someone who works at a fastener place that can give me the homey hookup.

Edit: not gonna lie to you, I was briefly tempted to give up and part out. I went outside to take pictures of the engine so I can sell it, took the VC off and found this.

This thing is mint inside.

It’s honestly too nice to give up on. Sigh. Guess I need to just swallow my pride and just get ready to pay $50 for some used bolts, $100 for a crusty PS pump, and $80 for a used VSS.

Meh. I need to get this thing running though. Idk why I can’t just give up on it like I want to. Lol.

You can buy a new speed sensor on RockAuto for $39.79, but it does not include the plastic gear which I assume you also don't have. IIRC that gear was either discontinued or on back order when someone else was seeking it some years ago.

It’s the wrong one. They use the 97-99 style pigtail and read the same as a 97-99 sensor does(make your Speedo show 2x mph if it’s a 95 like mine). Sadly.

As far as the gear goes, there’s a guy on eBay who makes a 3D printed one in various tooth counts. If I could find a 95-96 sensor I’d be in bidness.

I still stand behind chunking the 2GA harness and components and getting the 2GB setup. Superior connectors and performance. I don't know about cost effectiveness given your scenario/setup though.

Brother, if I could find a 2GB setup for cheap I would do it.

But even just the transmission to engine bolts people want $50 shipped for. A whole harness and ECU would be in the thousands I'd bet. ROFL

Edit - but, after extensive research I've found Dorman sells a kit for both the flexplate to crankshaft, and the clutch to flexplate bolts. Both total after taxes around $32. Not bad at all! That way I only need two M12x1.75 50mm bolts for the transmission, I have the other two I need. Then we can slap this thing together, and drop it in!

I mean I paid 300 for both harnesses. You'd be better off with a 97 to 99 with the ecu because the 95 ecu is stupid expensive and hard to find. The only reason I'm staying with it is because the 95s could care less if it sees boost. I heard the 97 up are a little picky when it comes to that.

If you have an ecu and need some cash I'd be more than willing to buy it off you if you decide to go the 97 up route.

I’ve owned and worked on a few 420a cars in my time. Sold off everything I had a few years back. They were my first “DSM” experience. Parts cars everywhere and junkyards absolutely slam full of them back then LOL. I often think about grabbing one for a beater. Wish you luck in your parts searches!

So all I need is the engine bay harness and the ecu right? I don’t need the starter harness and etc?

If that’s the case I’d trade straight up my harness and ecu for someone else’s. Still need the gear for the VSS though no matter what happens.

I assume there's no parts cars available near you that you could get for cheap for all the little stuff?

Sadly not. There’s one with a bunch of issues and a torn off front bumper that dude wants $3500 firm for. Rofl.

Also, after a ton of research I found you can get brand new crank bolts and clutch to Flexplate bolts from Dorman.

This is what I needed! I also grabbed a couple M12x1.75 50mm long bolts. I needed two to complete the bellhousing to engine bolt set.

And best of all, this arrived today too.

I officially have all I need to throw it in the engine bay and get it almost running.

Just need a radiator, a VSS/gear and a power steering pump then we’re in business. Getting close now!

Either of these helpful Cory?

The first one for Lancers and what not won't fit. That gear you sent though is the right one!

They have different teeth count. It ranges from 29-32. Not sure what one is right. Lol.

Great news! I have scored a power steering pump from an awesome member here. That’s a huge part of the puzzle and I’m stoked.

Now all I need is a VSS. Which honestly, I may just use a GPS app on my phone. LOL.

Woohoo! The VSS all you need to get 'er running now, or are there still more parts you need to source before she's road ready?

Pretty much all I need I think. Other than various fasteners I’m sure I’ll find I need mid-assembly. LOL

New favor to ask of you guys.

I don't have two of the transmission mount brackets. I can find the top bracket easily(for $55-$60. 🙄 ) but that rear manual transmission bracket is absolute unobtanium. Please check your local yards or FB marketplace for one for me! Or if you have one chilling in your garage..let me buy it! As a bonus if you have the top bracket and can save me the time(And the scalper from getting my money) I'll buy both from you!

Otherwise if enough time passes I'm gonna see if the automatic rear bracket will work...
