CrackedDSM's boring new project (420a)

A 1995 Eagle Talon ESI that I bought for damn near free, that I want to fully rebuild/get running again and use it as a super boring, slow daily driver.

Well guys, I'm kinda back. It's not a turbo, not AWD, not ever gonna be fast...but it's a DSM at least.

Story goes, shortly after I wrecked my pride and joy, the AMS Talon I put out feelers on FB for anyone local to me to 1) Keep an eye out for DSM shells and 2) if anyone had one, holler at me.

I got a couple comments but one dude reached out with a picture of a bumperless 2G and I was intrigued. Turns out it was a 420a, manual transmission. Which wasn't what I initially wanted...but honestly I could use a second car, and I could use another little low-risk/high reward project car. What sealed the deal is he said he had the title, and wanted $200 and would deliver it to me.

So I paid him, and the car came yesterday night. It's obviously rough...but it really has incredible bones. There is no rust on the strut towers, no rust in the rear quarters, no body damage or crazy electrical stuff. It's just disassembled from someone blowing the engine spectacularly. The A/C system is even still sealed!

I'm excited for this, to learn new stuff. I know exactly ZERO about 420a stuff..but I'm stoked to learn. And 2Gs make such comfortable cruisers I'm looking forward to that to.

Plans are just a stock rebuild/get the car driving. No mods or anything like that. I do want to immediately replace the ricey fenders with OEM ones, I need some 2GB Eclipse headlights for the 2GB Bumper that was included, and I really want to get rid of the 2GB Eclipse hoop spoiler for the oem 2ga talon spoiler/hatch with wiper. It's too much work to 2gB Eclipse swap the rear, so I'll just keep it 2ga talon w/ 2GB frumper. :p

Hit me up if you have any of those parts, or want anything I may be getting rid of. I also desperately need a full lock/key set if you have some off of a manual 2G!

Pictures below in no particular order.

Let's goo!!
Awesome buy, I can't wait to see what you do with this one.

This is the 3rd 2g I've seen that had everything on the inside painted blue. My gsx and my talon both had everything painted blue, now I see this one.

I wish you lived closer because I have a mint front and rear bumper along with the spoiler.

I love the non turbos. You already know I'll be following.

It's true. I like blue though, so I'm not mad at it. I wouldn't do it personally, but it's there now so hey. Might as well keep it.

And yeah, minnesota is just a tiche too far.

Definitely you 420a guys, please feel free to drop as much knowledge on me as you want. Tips, things to look out for, any kind of "gotchas" or "avoid this brand of aftermarket parts", etc. I won't be offended. I need the help! Lol.

10 years ago, and even 5 years ago, there was so much more available for the platform. Luckily you can still surf RockAuto for the maintenance, tune ups, rubbers and what not to get it going. If you were earlier to getting one, I'd have had to send you another box of goodies :)
One thing I do still have that I forgot about is a box of various, nice and shiny hardware. I pulled a bunch of nuts and bolts from a 2g at the yard that was in too good of shape. So, if you're missing any random bolts and want the originals, especially the 10mm ones I've got plenty of that for you. I also probably still have the A/C compressor mounting bolts from when I deleted mine. Just get a list going and we'll help out when and where we can!

Heck yeah, done deal.

And honestly that's the story of my DSM life. Day late, dollar short. I need some variation of that saying to be this projects name...ideas?

I've been surfing ebay lately and there are a bunch of part outs from the non turbos. Luckily suspension wise you'll be 100 percent fine since the non turbos share everything from a gst. I've been trying hard to scrape up as much 420a engine stuff as I can, that's where parts are getting kind of scarce.

Just be prepared for maybe 100 horse power at the wheels. I know your last car was putting down some power so you may laugh when you put your foot to the floor. It'll be fun though.

Nah I 100% know to expect painful slowness. I just want something manual, better on gas than my twin turbo SUV, and clothed like a DSM.

I like driving slow cars, fast.

I can tell you, painful slowness is driving a 4g37 1G DSM. The 420A models can at least accelerate a little and make some noise. The 4g37 just acts like it's a damn malnutritioned weasel LOL . And there's plenty a guy can do to ramp up the performance of the 420A, but I doubt you're looking into all that. Just enjoy it for what it is and fill a few gallons of fuel here and there. They're solid machines if you treat them right.

That’s true. My first car ever was a 93 talon DS. 1.8L, and the engine had like almost zero compression in two cylinders. Lmao. God that thing smoked like a chimney and was so gutless. Good times.

Dude, let's go! I'm happy for you, man.

Will def be following. Can't wait to see where you go with this!

I wonder how many pages this will get to…:p

Hopefully like, no more than 20. I don't want this to be some massive project, just a simple resto. But who knows...maybe it'll end up being Evo and AWD Swapped. (never gonna happen don't worry)

Very minimal things you need to turbo but with stock pistons I wouldn't even try. I saw a thread of everyone who was running a turbo back in the day said most of the failures were from the ring lands. Mine also did the same thing. If your rebuilding your engine just toss a turbo on while your at it, 5 to 7 pounds makes a huge difference. It's all in what you want.
