Ok i tried searching and couldnt find anything directly related.

1997 Eclipse GST...

I went to go get the engine codes read at auto zone. Closest place for free. The guy stuck the connecter on the connecter inside my car, and he was unable to make a connection or get any readings. Anyone have any ideas on what is up with that?

Maybe he doesnt know what hes doing.. Honestly.. Could be other things too.. But, I know where I'm at they dont know nothing.. Did he actually get it plugged up and couldnt find your vehicle? or what?

naw i double checked his connection. their readers couldnt read it. he tried 2 different scanners....it couldnt make a connection at all, nothing. Like it wasnt even there. What does that connect into?

The scanner should have a Generic setting that will read basic codes on any car. It's what I have to do with vehicle's that I don't have a key for that make at work.

Any OBDII scanner can read basic codes on any car. Take it back and see if they have a generic function. I have had to use it on VW and Saab before because it doesn't list there manufactor. Will it not find Mitsu. or will it not read the codes.

I meant any OBDII car. Only way I know to get codes off a 1g is with a Datalogger.

Dataloggers or dsmlink put the ECU into debug mode, right? So you have to disable/disconnect, unplug the ECU, then turn back on to read codes? Just a thought, I remember reading about it but I've never dealt with it. Didn't specify if you have a logger or dsmlink attached.

i believe thats all i have to say. the scan tool was unable to connect to the ecu. not there wasnt any codes or the manufactorer wasnt listed. IT COULDNT connect. and i already said its a 97 GST...

As someone mentioned, usually OBD scanners will have specific maker settings (GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, VW, etc) and will usually have an "OBDII Generic" setting. On the Equus scanner we use at work, I had to use the generic setting to read my wife's BMW, for example, because there's no BMW specific setting. I don't remember seeing a Mitsubishi specific setting either, and I don't know whether or not the Chrysler specific configuration will work on an Eclipse. Hm... I might have to experiment with that if I get bored at work. :)

See if the Zone was using the Generic configuration, and if that still doesn't work, have them switch it to a Chrysler configuration and see if that works.

I have a scanner. I bought it new plugged right in and read the codes fine it was the cheapest one you can buy. I would check your wires on the harness it plugs into. Also fuses, but I dont think that would make any difference since I thought the scanner went striaight to the ecu.

the autozone scanner is junk first off, this same thing has happened to a friend of mines 97 gst & he brought the car over to me. I put my mac scanner on it and it works just fine. The autozone scanner is an obdII generic(global) code reader, it should pull the codes, but there are no settings on them to change for any cars they should work with any 96 and newer car, but they dont sometimes instead they come up and say error or cant read codes. I used to have one and it was not very usefull for dsm's.

Make sure the key is in the on position or the scan tool will never make a connection. Check your fuses. And lastly check the pins in the scanner and the DLC connector in the car. If it still doesnt make a connection, his scanner is junk. Like everyone else mentioned any ol OBDII scanner should be able to read codes. I just bought a 600 dollar OBDII scanner for all makes and models last week, but your about a state and a half away from me. Good luck.

We do use a generic scanner, but it is a decent brand ACTRON, and yes, he was an idiot. The port is on the right side of the dash, under the lower part of the steering wheel. I check mine all the time and I have a 98 2g, so go figure. I have been working there for a long time now, doing the part time thing at night and the Marine Corps during the day. He should have double checked the connection....

Why, have you repeated that last post 3 times?
What have you checked? Maybe if you check some things out and post the results we could help you out, but if you keep being stubourn and saying the exact same thing, I'm not sure you'll get much help.

That is bull, I used it on mine, my buddy's 97 TSi AWD, and another buddy's 99 GS-T with no problems at all. As I said, yeah, it is a Generic scanner, but it does read the codes, as well as all the others. 95 and olders have OBDI, and 96+ have OBDII, so he should have had no problems, unless they have some EMS that changes the entire configuration completely... then that is a different story itself...

I have been there for over a year now and in the Marine Corps for 4, so yeah, that guy just didnt know what he was doing...
