I have a 1996 Eclipse gs and my check engine light has always been on. I've took it to all the parts stores and their scanners will plug into mine but nothing happens. I had a friend that worked at a salvage yard and he brought home their scanner and it worked and I had two problems. That was a long time ago and they no linger have that scanner.
I am just going to buy my own scanner. What is a good scanner that would work on my car and isn't that pricey.
Thanks

I've got a harbor freight obdII with live data. IT cost around 120 bucks and is hands down the best scanner i've ever owned. I haven't found a vehicle that it won't work on, and it is able to be updated thru usb also. CAN OBD II Code Reader / EOBD Scanner. To find another scanner that has all the options as this one and live data feed you will spend 300+ on a different brand.

Depending on what type of phone you have you can get this...

Auto Car V1.4 ELM327 OBDII OBD2 Bluetooth Diagnostic | eBay

And download the Torque app its free and you can look up and get rid of CEL and also you cam monitor a bunch of things as well as log with it. Near the bottom of that link there is a list of thing you can monitor using this. Just another option

Does this work?

I would go with the harbor freight scanner. Seems to work well with the money.

Yeah it works great! I have used my buddies a bunch on my car and does everything I have needed as far as telling me what CEL I have and it is very easy to clear the CEL's as well. I have not logged with it yet but the next time I am home I will log and let every one know hot it goes. There is also an option to E-mail the logs to your self so you can send the out to others.

Here is the app website (some features you need the full versions which is 5$)

Thanks. I looked it up and I like it. Does the upgrades cost. I am going to have to wait on buying that one due to don't have that kind of money yet. But looks like a good buy.

Upgrades as far as the app? There is a free version which you can do most things with such as log and clear CEL's and monitor data but there is a 5$ full version but I am not entirely sure what the full version gives you over the free one.

Is it easy to use and does it really work. I seen it on ebay but it looks shady to me being only $15.

My buddy got the 15$ one and has it for over a year now with no issues. I just looked up some more things on the app and the full version has more things you can receive data from and a lot more options with in the menu along with gps mapping that will record in real time a map of where you go. For under 20$ for the whole thing with so many options, I don't think its a bad deal at all.

Okay, but in your opinion should I get it or the one Bryanwheat suggested. Sorry if I am asking to much just really want to make sure I can get something to figure out what is wrong with my car. It has been driving me crazy for over a year.

There should be plenty of places that have scanners that will work on your car. The one they use at autozone should work just fine. I wouldn't necessarily even buy one if you just need the codes read.

I would say it all depends. The one from ebay and using the torque app gives you a lot more options from what I know because you can log and map you travels as well as emailing logs to people. The one from HF would be a good option because they are user friendly and are almost guaranteed to work with slightly less options, where as you take a slightly larger risk with the ebay one. Me personalty would go with the Ebay adapter with the Torque app because of all the options and customization.

Like I said in the beginning I already took it to all the parts stores and they don't work on my car. I wish they would work on my car. Save Me time, money and a year long head ache.
I think I might take the risk. It is only $15. It should work on my phone I have a smart phone. The Samsung Stratosphere.

I didn't get it from ebay I got it from amazon. It works great. The one thing that sucks is i always loose it. It costed me 35 bucks and 7 shipping

its a good scanner. i got it over a year ago. so far I have used it on Mitsubishi's, VWs, Volvos, a BMW, few Subarus and its work flawlessly. when you first get it you will have to pair it, like what eclipsemf said. then your set. you can customize the app with carbon fiber, you can make a cluster of gauges, Readiness status, digital or analog gauges. its a cool app. Makes me feel all high tech

Well I got mine and i am really digging it :thumb: i have shown it to a few friend and family and they are in awe . And now they want one ..... I just need to put in the right info for my car so it reads it better . And i like how i can see my volts meter on my car .:thumb:

Can you log A/F ratio and throttle position?

I don't want to spend the cash just yet to get a wideband and want to make sure I am running right.

Throttle position, yes, it has the ability for AFR but I havent tried it yet. Ive been using it on my 06 Saturn Ion Redline and loving it. Get the 1.5 version of the BT adapter though. I'll have to try the AFR when I go to lunch to see if it works on my car. I figured for the $35 I spent, its 100x better than any scanner and cheaper. Lets me log Boost, IAT, MPG avg and current, Throttle position, rpm, calculated HP and torque, and alot of other things.
