My last timing belt and balance belt was a gates, not because i chose it but the garage said HKS belts dont exsist for our cars! So they put a gates on instead. The pullys and the reas was all oem items though. Car got 31k miles on that belt and when i took it all off for another timing belt job it all looked great! the belt was in good condition

I've had zero issues with my gates stuff water pump, belt, balance shaft belt, all pulleys I'm almost At the 10000 mark

My car ran oem stuff for 80000 km no issues either (except water pump and t belt were aftermarket ) the balance shaft belt was pretty cracked and all the pulleys had play it was last changed in 2006 @ 160,000 had it running till 240,000 so I changed it asap I'm currently running gates I'm at 249300

I also want to bring this back and mention that i have around 35-40k miles on my oem water pump and its got a bearing whine going on. Its about 5 years old now, I didnt change it last time i did the belt which was 3 years ago bit im getting ready to do another timing job on it anyway so the pump will be changed this time around.

I might try a gates pump but i have ways put mitsu items on the car for pullys, tensioners and pumps so i would feel bad for doing this now and getting a gates.

I just put a gates water pump on and looking at the gates and oem side by side the quality difference is indiscernible. You can pick them up for around 40$ online so I would go that route unless you really want oem peace of mind. The gates pump is a nice piece for the money, and gaskets are included.

Also when I purchased a gates timing component kit the pulleys included were oem koyo. This indicates to me that gates has an idea of what is acceptable for oem performance.

I recently put a gates water pump in my 97 GSX. No problems with it so far and since then the car has been tuned (19 psi, 16g). The only thing i dont like about it vs oem is that the gates water pump is missing the dowel pin for the belt attachments. That makes installing the metal sprockets for the alternater/power steering belt that much harder.

Rather old thread but I use the Gates pumps and gaskets, no problems.

Agreed, Marty.
What it comes down to for us is any water pump that has a cast impeller and the pully locating pin on the water pump hub- which the Gates always seem to have.
