THIS WILL BE RESERVED FOR BEGINNER E85 QUESTIONS, FOR TUNERS THAT HAVE NEVER HEARD OF RUNNING IT OR HAVEN'T RESEARCHED IT YET. THE ADVANCED E85 THREAD IS HERE FOR THE MORE ADVANCED QUESTIONS ---> http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/372386-alternative-fuel-e85-ethanol-corn-gas-e70-advanced-merged.html

HOPEFULLY THIS WILL MAKE THE BASIC E85 INFORMATION MORE CENTRALIZED AND EASIER TO FIND FOR THE DSM'rs WHO ARE JUST GETTING THEIR NOSE WET AND ARE UNSURE OF WHAT E85 IS.

THANKS,

GOFER

Has anyone tryed running E85 in their dsm? Their is a station in my area that sells it and it's not much more than regular gas. It is 85% ethanol and 15% gas and is 110 octane . It could be a cheap alternative to race gas.

People who use E85 are already getting a tax break because it is subsidized to lower the cost at the pump (in order to encourage people to use it).

if e85 was in my area id use it. dont know about the converson tho..

yea that cost about evens over, pay less per gallon , but fill up more often.

and yea its higher octane, but really higher octane such as 105 like E85 is, really only helps when u have higher compersion ratios, if your worried about hp. but i think the main reason to use is for fuel milage.

as for proof, just did a search.

The Final Score — Fuel Economy and Cost
After refueling we put the fuel amounts and the prices paid into a spreadsheet and compiled a clear, side-by-side comparison for both fuel consumption and cost. Remember, these results apply only to this vehicle and to the prices in effect during our 667-mile test.

Gas Result: From San Diego to Las Vegas and back, we used 36.5 gallons of regular gasoline and achieved an average fuel economy of 18.3 mpg.

Gas Cost: We spent $124.66 for gasoline for the trip. The average pump price was $3.42 per gallon.

E85 Result: From San Diego to Las Vegas and back we used 50 gallons of E85 and achieved an average fuel economy of 13.5 mpg.

E85 Cost: We spent $154.29 on E85 for the trip. The average pump price was $3.09 per gallon

Gas/E85 difference:The fuel economy of our Tahoe on E85, under these conditions, was 26.5 percent worse than it was when running on gas.

To answer your question, there is no tax break and I was reading on e85fuel.com that it is technically illegal to operate a vehicle designed for unleaded on another fuel source. I don't think you'll have to worry it though. I'll be running it this summer as well:shhh:

WTFWhat about e10 that's everywhere?

"Well you can run 10% ethanol, but not 85%, it's the law!" ...:D

Sorry to thread jack... but when I seen the 3rd Post I had to say something

i personally wouldn't use E85

What's WORTH it is that its 105 ocatne let see you run the boost and timing I have on E85 on 92 pump....
We Have had a E85 station for about 6 months ....
Start mixing soon as I could To Tune for It

Yes It CAN use upto 30% more Fuel but I have never had to add in that much fuel but also its only up to 70%ethonal sometimes
I've seen Better/same fuel mileage before on mixes of less than 70% of Ethonal and gas

Bottomline I want a Stil to make some of my own alki :thumb:LOOK at what everyone Who uses it SAYS about E85 using it FOR performance MOST Flexfuel veicals can't fully take advadage of the Higher octane of e85 or the Diferant mixes of Ethanol and Gas
You would be suprised buy what A turbo car can make use of Alki....
Hell there is a FFV Turbo Saab That gets better Gas mileage "The flex-fuel engine will improve fuel consumption under mid- to high-load driving"
Green Car Congress: Saab Flex Fuel Vehicle for 05

But Yes in the same case you Do always use more of cource But the Cost is usaly at worst the same
IMA
everybody else here just whats to be able to run the boost and timing on E85
Here's another Artical on a Tubo Saab

But Saab has found a way to take advantage of ethanol's higher-octane rating to improve performance, and the company put that to work on the 9-5 Aero BioPower Concept wagon shown here in L.A. You see, E85 comes in at 104 octane, and this allowed Saab engineers to advance the ignition timing and increase the turbo boost by 20 percent on the Saab 9-5's 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

well first of all,I mean because the offset in my area is not worth it!
What is the price span on gas vs ethanol in your area? black1996?

the biggest problem with e85 is you have to run more fuel quantity(1.0 gas to 1.3 e85)
For us turbo junkies we enjoy fuel economy but are after performance.

So if we can change out a fuel pump, and seals and tweak are tunes and get 20% more power out of are cars, isn't that worth it.

So your buying more gas but paying less per gallon.

When I top off my dsm with 91 octane at 4.15 a gallon, I could easily go to e85 and save 10 bucks a fill.

so instead of 50 dollars a fill its 40 and my car makes more power(after the conversion costs)

and kiss knock counts goodbye by the better fuel

Would I use it, when they put a pump in my city, consider it done.

People always fear what they don't know about.:shhh:

I think chicago was named #1 city with the highest gas prices... so i run e85...

E85 = 3.45$ per gallon
93 octane = 4.35 per gallon
103 octane = 4.65 per gallon

Ya where @
105 octane E85----------------------------$3.09
92 octane E10-----------------------------$4.19
last time I checked 110 was over -----------$5.50.....
----------Plus you got bring a Gas Can (off-road use only)
and 100 ocatane cost more --without the Can

E-85 has its pluses and minuses.
+Can be great for performance. No argument there
+Reduces dependency on foreign oil
+Cheaper, for now

-however, it takes just as much energy to make it, there for, AS OF NOW, its just shifting the fuel demand from cars to the industry that makes it ethanol.
-Also, it burdens the rest of the world (and the U.S.A.) as it hikes the price of food.
-for flex fuel cars, you must consistently use it, or your fuel mileage with go down the toilet.
So you have to avoid going from E85 and back to E10

+-As for being better for the environment, that's totally debatable.
