Some say DSMLink is not worth the price if you're mildly modding. But keep in mind that i firmly believe that this should have been my first purchase. if you plan on going the distance with you DSM (or even mildly modding the fuel system) look at DSMlink first. I wish i could have had fuel and timing control when i first ran up the boost on my eclipse. I am sure the NLTS would have been great when i ALMOST beat that 400+hp Camaro SS who'd been giving me hell for a year. But, the most important reason to get DSMLink is the customer sevice... I know first hand how much i got when i forked the $600 over to DSMLink instead of TMO or KeyDiver (not that they are bad companies, just entirely different beasts). here's a series of emails i have had with them recently. i've been having problems with dsmlink connecting to my laptop (honest truely is the best policy):
Man. Don't be embarrased... First of all, i know nothing about mitsubishi ecu's and you could have told me that i fried something, but you repaired it for free and i would be soooo happy because i thought that i would be getting good customer service. Your honesty by far is the most dazzling aspect of being a customer to ECMTuning, Inc. And I LOVE DSMLink, so that says something about my respect for your honesty and this company for having you be a part of it.
Just thank you. you personally have been of great assistance. and i am a testomony to why anyone should get your product over any one else. Your customer service is truely worth the money and yet you still have a very affordable product that by far out performs anything in the price range. In fact, the price in NO way reflects the quality of your product or this company. I will definately get my friend's Nissan ecu out to you soon to socket.
Oh, I forgot all abou tmy OTHER ecu... I will also have your $77 included in that shipment as well.
I am your free salesmanhahahaha.

The problem was an improperly soldered pin on the DSMLink memory board after I replaced the chips to repair it. I've fixed that and everything now works properly. In addition to testing on the bench with your comm cable, I tested the ECU and your memory module in my car and it drove fine (with settings to match my car, of course; I've since restored your defaults).
The improperly soldered pin explains all of your symptoms.
I'll be sending everything back to you by UPS instead of USPS. It should be there tomorrow. After you are satisfied that it's working properly, you can pay the balance due of $77 for the original ECU repair and I'll send out your other ECU by USPS.

That's fine. I don't really care how long it takes. I only really trust you and your associates because others have been dishonest up to this point...
I have another question... I have been helping my close friend turbocharge his ka24e 1989 240sx. and we're looking into engine management now bacause we're eventually going to drop in a to4b h-3 (I think it's alot like an 18G). SOOO, we really need more control than just an SAFC2. All KA24E ecus have eproms where the maps are stored. we plan on tuning the system with a wideband, ROMulator, and rom editor called Live Edit (for Nissan ecus). Once we get a tune we like we'll flash an EEPROM using an EPROM programmer with the saved tune and drop it in. ... My question is can you socket my friends eprom? How much would it be. I'm not looking for the best deal just the best service. Do you know anything about Nissan ecus?
Thanx for the reply,
Matt, VA

Yeah, 200 Hz at idle seems screwy and correlates with your 14 psi dash boost gauge reading. I'm not sure how it could do that, but it's something I can check here. I'm assuming that the problem is not with the MAFT (although it would normally be the thing I would expect first) since I believe you had the MAFT working with your other ECU.
It will probably take an extra day to get to me since you sent it to Tom (you sent it directly to me the last time and the ECU repairs are done by me). Tom will pass it along when he gets it, so I will probably get it late Wednesday.

thanx. I sen't it to this address today:

via ups: tracking #1ze308w40243597202. I tested my serial port on my laptop by reprogramming my lm-1 and everything was ok with that. i can log the ecu i'm sending you with scanmaster (which gives 200+ hertz at idle. . . ). and i can log my original ecu so i don't think there's a hardwire proble from the port under the dsh to the ecu, either. i inclosed the cable and the ecu with dsmlink.
thanks for your help
matt
Yup, it has been confirmed. When talking to *your* ECU, DSMLink will
not connect. When talking to my normal test ECU, it works fine. So I
believe the cable is OK. The problem is likely to be inside the ECU
somehow. I opened it up and checked that voltage regulation seems to be
working normally, but I could be testing that wrong. I do know that I'm
getting a good, solid, normal 4.99v out of the 5v sensor output pin when
referenced against sensor ground. I know that's fairly normal at least.
I will need to meet up with Dave down in Gaithersburg tomorrow to hand
this stuff off to him. He'll need to dig deeper into the ECU to figure
out what's wrong now.

I still think the best approach would be to send the ECU DSMLink module and cable. I should have my Talon running again in a few days, so I will be able to test the ECU in the car as well as on the bench.
Boost gauge a 14 psi certainly suggests a problem somewhere, unrelated to tuning settings. I'll check specifically for any problems related to that.
We'll get everything working. If it looks like the troubleshooting on that ECU will take some time, I'll suggest sending you back your other ECU while I do the work on the '90 ECU.

I assume this ECU does now run the engine.
Failure of the comm circuit in the ECU is rare and I have to say that I don't recall doing a comm test on that ECU on the bench. That's an oversight on my part. I suppose it's possible that the ECU could still have a problem with that circuit that I didn't detect (such a problem is independent of the DSMLink memory module).
The reason that you couldn't communicate with the ECU prior to the repairs is that the ECU could not run properly with its bad voltage regulator.
I don't think the problems with the ECU would have caused any failure of the DSMLink cable.
The best I can suggest is sending the ECU and cable back for additional testing. There won't be any additional repair charges regardless of what I find.

I got the ecu today that you fixed. with dsmlink installed and i keep getting a i/o: connection timed out error. I tried all my com ports. I uninstalled the dsmlink software and tried again and it didn't work. I added this: http://www.dsmlink.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6232&postcount=3 to the dsmlink.prefs file and it still doesn't work. I have a standard serial connection. I am really frustrated... i don't know what to say. What's going on? I didn't want to post this on the forum becaue it is very negtive. But, what the hell is happening now. You did fix this ecu and repaired the memory module for dsmlink, right? Can my cable all of a sudden go bad?
Matthew Campbell
P.S. i got this error message the last time i had this ecu in the car, too.
