I'm trying to install my kiggly street beehives, and they will not sit all the way down on the stock locators. His site say they are supposed to use stock locators. I tried ones from 3 different heads.

Anyone else have this problem?

The od of the lip of the stock spring seat must be too large to fit in the bottom of the ID of the springs.

If that is the case, set the factory spring seat to the side, and add another aftermarket flat spring shim.

You may want to measure the seat pressure with the stock locators. You'll likely find it to be too low. That's why Kiggley supplies the thick locators with their spring kits.

Yes that is the issue. But if you omit the locator, what keeps the spring from digging into the head around the guide?

No, these are the street springs, and designed to run the stock locator.

what shims are you using ?

I use VSI brand, common in any machine shop.

Bastard... if the springs are jumping around that much to hit that lip around the guide, you have other issues to deal with.

Most heads do not have a lip on the spring seat, Some newer heads do not even have a steel spring seat anymore.

How thick are the stock seat locators? I don't have one available to measure, I would if I could

I found shims to use that vary in sizes 0.2mm, 0.3mm, 0.5mm, I think the stock ones are at least a 1mm thick. Should I be looking thicker shims?

IIRC the stock spring seat is .035-.040

The VSI That I use and stock come in .015 .030 and .060

My comment still stands. The street springs are rated at 85 lbs @ 1.475".

The installed height on a DSM head is commonly much greater than 1.475".

This means that you will need to put a shim under the stock locator to get the seat pressure up to 85 lbs.

Using a spring tester, compress the spring until it is exerting 85 lbs. Now measure the height and record the number. Now, with the factory locator in place, measure the spring installed height on the head and record the number. Take the difference of the two recorded numbers and that value equates to how much shim you will need to give you 85 lbs on the seat. You'll also want to measure your coil bind clearance.

Yes, I know all this. They install at about .060" less than a stock dsm spring and retainer when used with the OEM .039" thick locator. My kigglys were installing at about 1.510", so I got some .030" shims to install them at 1.480, close enough.

The issue here is that Kiggly states, these are for use with the oem locator. However my springs have an ID of about 0.744", and my locators have a OD that tapers from 0.740 to 0.750, with a radius at the bottom. This doesn't let the spring sit all the way down on the locator. So what do I do about that? Ignore it? Attempt to find different locators? Put a shim on top of the locator?

My dad who is an accomplished SBF engine builder suggests radiusing the flat part of the springs a small amount

are evo spring seats different than DSM spring seats?

On the website it stated that these are for evo and DSMs, and just states "oem" steats, maybe it is designed to use evo spring seats since they are both beehive design.

Sorry I dont have any evo seats either to measure. I feel like I should just collect some spare parts for measuring and reference data.

EDIT: I think I answered my own question. I got the same part number for both the DSM and EVO seats. MD113424.
Can anyone else verify this and above?

I measureed locators from 4 heads. The original head to the car, a virgin 92 head, a Jasper reman head, and a jem head. All measured the same.

I ended up lightly deburring the springs so they would fit over the locator.
