Which turbo will be sufficient for consistent 11 second times? I've recently decided on a big 16g, but will that be big enough to run 11s with supporting mods and decent tuning? Remember, this is for a budget street car, so any one purchase over $1k is tough. A big 16g will run about $700-900, which is about $300-400 less than the larger alternatives.

Of course, I'll need lots of practice to run these times, but, I just want to make sure that it's possible before the money is spent.
 
Ported 16G with Evo III Manifold, 550ccs, front mount, ACT 2100, Lightweight Flywheel, Walbro 255, SAFCII, 3" exhaust, cruise control eliminated, a good tune and race gas and like 20 psi, you should hit low 12s if you can drive good. This is all on a full weight car with AC etc.
 
If you really want good spool and power check out the borg warner s200 turbo, these things are basicly 50trim size but flow 55lbs in comparison to 49lbs of regular 50trims and they spool alot earlier! there is a guy down here on the islands that runs one one his evo VIII (he runs the s258 which is slight larger) and he spooled at 3150 rpms as logged by his aem ems with a rich afr(10.5 to 1) and only 18 degrees of peak timing! freakin insane!!

Do you know which turbine housing and which turbine wheel he uses in his s258? Is the engine a stroker? What exhaust manifold? Was he juicing it up with nitrous or anything like that?

His car was a stock 2.0 evo with a t3 housing I can't really remember the housing specs but I'll get back to you guys as soon as I talk to him again, he had an adapter plate for his stock manifold and a custom o2 housing. But the car was unreal! until he trashed it!!!(yeah just found out about that today...)

The borgwarner turbos from what I hear and seen are extremely efficient thus capable of running higher boost levels and more timing than others turbos due to the design.

Thanks notsofast, I'd like to find out whatever you can about his setup and how it was working power and spool - wise. They are available with different turbinehousings and A/R's and usually 2 choices for turbine wheel. Not many mitsu people using the borg-warners yet so it's been a little hard to sort out the conflicting results.

Okay, so its time to upgrade from the stock T25 (97 GSX). I have researched this and don't want to stray too far from a stock tune, injectors, fuel pressure etc. It looks like I can run a T28 or 16G and get away with it if I limit the boost to about 15-17 psi. and add a FMIC. So if you were making the decision, which of these two turbos would you run and why? Thanks for any thoughts. TP

I ordered a used 4g63t from Japanese auto shop in El Paso,Tx back in 2004 til this day I'm not sure where the motor came out of. Its an automatic and I'm guessing the turbo is a 13g with the information I've searched thru using the forums. The problem now is that white smoke was coming out of the exhaust during hard acceleration (boost). So I searched the forums and I know believe its the turbo seals. I decided to take off the manifold and turbo, while doing this I found oil in the upper intercooler pipes and intake. The thing is I'm not sure what turbo will bolt right up, only because I dont know what motor it is and guessing that the turbo I currently have is a 13g. here are some pics and sometime this week I will post some new ones with the turbo I just took off.

If it has td04 then its a 13g. If it has td05h then more than likely its a 14b.....and a 14b or 16g will bolt right up to your engine :thumb:
 
The TDO4HL are 13g's that come on the 1st gen auto. The motor probably came with 390cc injectors as well. I did some searching about what the "HL" means but I couldn't really find a clear answer, but it is different than a regular 13g td04h.
I would upgrade to at least a 14b and some 450cc injectors......
 
Cool thanks, the turbo on my engine reads td04 hl, what does hl mean?

It's an identification for the part number of the housing. TD04 have part numbers that start with 49177; TD04L have part numbers that start with 49377; TD04H and TD04HL both have part numbers starting with 49189. The TD04HL is easily distinguished because it has an integrated by-pass valve.

thanks, so my motor would be a 1g auto? I thought I had a 7bolt only because of my oilpan, not sure if that pic of the oil pan is good enough to justify the difference. all 1gs were 6 bolt right??
 
What the hell are you talking about? The 1G seven-bolts don't have the crankwalk problems that 2Gs have. He's fine with that one, and doesn't need to 'seal' it... well, aside from a couple of visible oil leaks, and possibly replacing that valvecover.. from the state of the spark plug cover, I'd guess that it may be cracked a little here or there.

I'd definitely replace that turbo though. Can sell it off for a decent price to a 3KGT-VR4 guy looking to get a pair to upgrade his car's turbos, and pick up a 14b from a manual 1G guy who's upgrading.
 
If it's an A/T motor then you have quite a few things that can/need to be upgraded if you are wanting to mod it. Injectors,Cams,Turbo to name a few. I'd keep the FPR as it runs a higher base FP than the 5 spd cars. ;)

Below is a comparision between a 1G and 2G but it also gives you an idea of some of the part differences between 1G A/T and M/T. BTW, what did ever happen to people giving reputation points? I remember someone else talking about this not to long ago.

The problem is, he doesn't have a 2G seven-bolt. He has a 1G automatic seven-bolt. The chart has zero real bearing on the conversation, aside from saying that the automatic came with a smaller turbo, lower lift cams, smaller injectors and a higher base fuel pressure. I'd disagree with the higher base FP by the way... without anything to manage the enrichment that would bring, he'd run rich and slow.

Additionally, that chart is wrong... the 2Ga DO have a cam angle sensor, it's just hidden behind the cam gear and is a total b***h to deal with or replace.

As for rep points, apparently someone was abusing the system, so only mods can give them out now. Which makes Reputation grow *really* slowly, with how rarely Mods seem to give out points.



PS- Oop, just read that you saw the 1G seven bolt thing. Still have no idea why the chart was there. :)
 
Looks like your caps lock is broken, along with your turbo, greddy. :D

I'd second the suggestion for an E3-16G though. Very nice turbo, quick spool and can flow a lot of air. A few people have made it into the 400 club on them, but that's tricky given the 'max' rating is something like 385hp, unless you're running water/alky injection.
