Where are the FWDs at????

I obviously didn't read 47 pages, I'm new here. But the topic is interesting.

I love my FWD, but I wouldn't drag regardless of the drivetrain. I just don't have that kind of money to support racing. I don't want AWD. Well, that's not really true. My ideal car would be RWD or AWD with a heavy rear bias.

But for someone who just wants around 380-515 HP for some around the town spanking, I think the FWD suits me. It's lighter, simpler, less power loss, less to fix/break, and better handling. There are just as many advantages to AWD, but again, this suits me more for now, I think. The Quaife will be essential.

Eventually, I plan to pick up an AWD to join my GST in the garage.

Kiggly has had great success with an auto FWD. Check out Kiggly Racing - kigglyracing.com

I've seen kiggly's but I'm sure he has extensive work done to his. I think it would be like comparing apples to oranges. But I will shoot him a pm see what he says.

Anyone else have any suggestions or tips if I should go through with the swap or if ill be better sticking with the 5 speed.
Thanks in advanced.

Get a 10'' converter and have ITP build your auto. Its worth the money and you will run consistant. Wont be in the boat of breaking your trans every few track visits. The auto can handle the power. Kiggly will tell you he went through alot of manual trans setups then he went auto and never looked back. Hell even TRE told me to go auto with the power levels im pushing and the amount of gears I break.
Yes it will cost alot at first but it will pay you back in the end. I payed $600 for my stock 2g auto w/ converter. But I will cost another 1k for the converter and 2k for the trans to be built. Its worth it if your going to drag race it professionaly in IFO or NSCRA.
For daily and taking it to the track every now and then a standard rebuild will suit you to 650whp high 10s.

Thanks that's great info.
I'm not trying to drag professionally but I do take it to the track often and very rarely drive it on the street. I just want to hit my goal of mid 11s. So a stock tranny would be capable of it? For the converter to stall my turbo (50 trim) would I need to use nitrous or would it be possible without it?

What kind of 60ft's are you getting on the auto?

I couldnt tell you what stall speeds you will need. I havent switched over to auto just yet. Try asking the guy who just put up info on the 10'' converter. A stock manual trans will be fine you will just want a LSD. Make sure you can hit 1-3 gear without ginds or lock outs and a good 6puck clutch will get you there.

I pull 1.68ish with 26x10x15 MT with a solid 6puck clutch leaving the line with 16psi@6000rpm (60mm turbo, 57mm turbine wheel)

Well, I went to the track last night for the first time in a few months to test out my new Quaife LSD. Last time I went I got a personal best of 14.1@113 with a 2.4 60' with the stock open diff. The LSD made the car feel completely different. I was having a lot of trouble getting a good launch and was getting wheel hop (which i wasn't getting before) so much the wipers were coming on in first and/or second. I lowered my launch to 3,500 RPMS and my tire pressure to 28 psi and managed to squeeze out a 2.3 60' (my best ever) and ran a 14.2@111.

Slicks are high on my list but I really want to get a 13.99 or better on the street tires first. Any other ideas to get a better launch with the Quaife on street tires? I have AGX/Eibach Pro suspension set at 1/8 (soft front and stiff rear). I lowered the front tire pressure to 26 for my last pass but the time slip didn't print so I have no idea if it helped or not. I've heard mixed reviews about running lower pressure on street tires.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I also working on a few ways to squeeze some more power out of the 14b but I also feel I have room to grow with my FWD launch.

Well, you could get as low at 24 or 25 lbs on tire pressure. Not sure I would go much lower. Honestly, it is probably just a seat time thing with getting comfy on the new setup. 3 or 4 passes doesn't seem like that much. Go make a water box in the driveway and mess around with it. I know someone who does just that :).

I should not tell all his secrets but my cul-de-sac has seen a few short passes.

I agree 100% that I need more seat time as it feels way different then it did before with the open diff. At the same time I want to make some more improvements before going back to the track. To add, I drive around the water box and don't do burnouts (again, I have heard mixed reviews when it comes to street tires).

Your getting there bro. I honestly lowered my tire pressure down to around 16psi to get a good launch with my street tires. That's a call you will have to make though. Slicks are definitely the way to go if you wanna really launch that thing. Just keep trying the more time behind the wheel at the track the better.

Y don't burnout with street tires will only make them more slick. At most a little chirp just to clean out any rocks and stuff.

Good point on driving around the water box. My buddy is using slicks so we actually make a water box for him and kinda stage the car. My bad guess I had too much barley pop today watching MSU lose. BOOO!

here I am at the 2011 shootout enjoy

That red FWD is moving!

wheel back spacing is 5.5 and I am running a 5 mm spacer as well, fenders are rolled pulled and cut

Tearing my 91 Laser down for a winter build. High compression, 14b maxxed out and a steady diet of E85 will be in it's near future!

Well fellas, sorry to let anyone down but i went to the darkside and went AWD. However this leaves me with some goodies some of you might want. i've got the stage 2 TRE FWD trans with Quaife LSD that's never been to the track and never been flat shifted (only half ass flat shifted mmaybe a dozen times)

Also have the fidanza 9lb FWD 6 bolt flywheel with fairly new friction surface for sale and my weld drag lites with slicks on them (comes with lug nuts and spacers too) the slicks need to be replaced though, but the rims are perfect, they've only been through 2 sets of tires as far as the usage life on them
