Cleaned my grounds and looked for potential electrical issues, came to the realization that I will have to rewire the whole car at some point in the near future, the cables are old, it was giving me an issue with starting the car.

Your car will run again like a champ after you finish!

So its been some time since the last major update!

But its been moving along over theast few weekends! Its ALMOST COMPLETE!!!!!!!!!

We need new exhaust hangers as they were wrong and too small of a hole, and also we ended up with GL5 trans fluid so thats being rebought for GL4. So this should all be here this week and by NEXT weekend its possible to start it and likely have it on the ground! WOW. Will be great once this happens as then once all ok and checked for leaks etc I can then get it booked in for our MOT which is a yearly inspection to make sure its safe to be on the road. If all goes to plan by the end of sept this will now be off my hands and back with the owner full time where he can drive it for a few months before it goes back to sleep for the winter months as salt gets spread as he never drives in that.

These pics are also slightly delayed now as mostly all hardware is now torqued up, front droplinks are now the correct way as i placed them on the outside vs inside while i had it all in loosely for mock up, propshaft is now rebuilt and back in and bumpers fully on with lights and ALL new led upgraded bulbs! Want to make sure people see it stopping and indicating afterall LOL

Talon Restoration update!

Well..... What a day! Got super scared at one point and thought the engine was gone but was safe. Will fill you in below.

So during the week, we order a bunch of parts as we needed them based on last week's issues,

These were.
* Exhaust hangers in the correct hole size
* GL4 Trans fluid
* Grommets
* New trim clips as some of them were broken from age.

They all arrived about wed-thurs so in time for today. I got working on the car after picking up some FRESH 99 oct 0% ethanol fuel ( The good stuff only being used )

The hangers went on nicely then i proceeded to fill the trans with new GL4 after draining the old fluids out. I wanted to not mix or risk keeping GL5 in there even though it has not been in for long anyway and has done so few miles in the last few years either.

Pre topped up the PS res and bled the rack as much as I could with the engine off.

Primed the engine for oil pressure and then got it running and was nice to finally hear it run again! We now have a decat mid pipe as we don't require a cat pre-92 cars and as it is a 91, this means we can ditch the cat which was aftermarket anyway (no rear o2 sensor) and this will free up a bit of power, and a nicer tone in the system.

Once warmed up for about 15 or so min's I dip the clutch to put it into gear and have it moving to hear the parts move and lube the gears up with the new shockproof I put in now.

This was the SCARY PART!!!!!

Knock knock KNOCK knock! Holy crap really... The engines knocking??? So I turn the engine off and thought a sec. Went through the process of how or why, I checked the oil and it's good, loads in there but I drain it anyway and do a service on it and a new filter in case. See nothing out of normal but smelt of fuel a bit so had me wondering if an injector was leaking and washed it out and spun a bearing. I start the car again and knock knock knock etc etc and I rev it and it gets louder as I rev so I shut it off again! As its just me at this point I don't want to run it for longer than I need to so the owner was on his way down and once he arrived I started it while he was in the bay and said it sounded like plastic! So I get under the car and he starts it and I see in the corner of my eye the alt belt is wide in 1 area. So I yell kill it.

As the engine stops the belt shows at the top it's split??? It's a new belt from the timing job I did in 2022 and has been fine so I think it got dislodged and snagged and when split causing a flapping sound like the engine knocking. So I whip the belt off and cut 1 rib off and on 3 ribs now put it on and start the car up. PRAISE THE LORD zero knocks!!!!! All smooth and as it once was. So as you can imagine was super scared as I never touched the engine doing the chassis so for it to go would baffle my mind. The only part done was the air box was re-painted and some covers/brackets. Hearing it smooth made me happy and panic was over YAY.

However, the PS cooling pipe has sprung a leak as it was quite corroded and even though it had a very light blast must of dislodged some rust sealing it up. so that's something we will be replacing.

But the wheels are NOW ON woop woop.

OTHER NEW PARTS INSTALLED TODAY.

dudes custom parts shifter kit (inside and out) only parts not used were the plastic bases as, one. Plastic here i don't like and will soften on the base and 2 he had an older shifter kit that used alloy bases so those stayed and will last alot longer.

New rear led fog light as his old one was off to one side and was red and ugly in your face.
This new one is central, black appearing and subtle but also brighter once on. I fabbed up some stainless brackets and painted them black for mounting to the bumper bolts.

Another new addition is I opted for a small hidden catch can, this was due to the intercooler having oil inside, and wanted to help protect it a bit more long term. I added filtering inside like my alloy cans I used to make and this is easily emptied once jacked up for a service. It's mounted via 1 bolt from the transmission.

Other than this rollercoaster of a day it was still a WIN! Will be fully finished next week and then be able to have a small test drive once the PS cooling pipes changed and not spewing fluids everywhere (that's the fluids you see on the cross bars)

So it's nearly done. Looks AMAZING AND LIKE NEW UNDER THERE, Im super happy with the outcome and the owner is loving the work, a lot of time was taken to bring this back again. It's a HUGE task and from what it once was to NOW it's amazing the difference.

If I heard that, I'd literally make a poop right there in my shorts.
Haha my heart started to beat fast! I questioned alot of things but could not figure out why or how if i not done any engine work. But i tried to check it out but as not being able to get under it while starting (listening to the pan) i could only go by sound. So once it was fine my heart relaxed alot more but right there its a sinking feeling and the biggest ? At the time.

Welp... gave her fresh fluids, made necessary changes in ecmlink for speed density switch and tried to fire her up and FAILED... cranks and no start. Got it to fire a couple times but dies within a second or two. Checked spark plugs they're pretty ugly so I'll put fresh ones in tomorrow and try again

Talon Restoration update!
1 : This is the CLEANEST undercarriage I have ever seen one of these vehicles and it brings a tear to my eye.

2 : I've had a similar issue with a "knock" that scared the heck out of me. Turned out to be my alternator bolt had backed out and the alternator was "rattling" in response to the engine RPMs. I was sure that my fresh build was FUBAR until I had someone rev the car while I was under it listening and spotted the alternator jostle around. Put my finger on the bolt and it went away. I can't explain the relief I felt.

Thank you, Its been a task but its looking amazing now.

I think any car guy hearing a knock is bad and all our hearts beat fast wondering why / if its knock. We all assume the worst. It helped to have 2 people for sure as it can be turned on/off fast. Still no idea why a rib decided to split off causing this but its a new one to me. Saved in the memory banks to check again if i hear it on anything else.

Thankfully managed to sleep knowing it was all ok.

Got my shortblock back on friday evening and been wrenching like a madman to try and get the long block done so i can drop it in. Block is 85% done. This was as off 1 this morning. Hopefully by tomorrow i can drop this thing in.

Fired up the new motor, had a small leak on the turbo drain but all else seems good!

Congrats! I've always had that drain issue and I'm sure it's not you're first time. I read on here to put two gaskets LOL. So I did and it works :D

Got a pic of the turbo drain?

Cleaned and reassembled the throttle body, used sealant on the metal gaskets to seal off any potential leaks. Hopefully the turbo oil supply line leak is fixed. I replaced the copper crush washers, we'll see what happens when I fire it up tomorrow. I'll install the '97-'99 bumper cover and headlights sometime this week.

It's an oem drain from a 1g. I use the oem gaskets and place two on the end of the drain that attaches to oil pan. The top sealed fine but if it leaked, I'd do the same. (Top being where the drain pipe connects to turbo.) Did you still need a pic?

Nah, I was just curious as to what it looked like. I'm sure it's similar to the 2G.

They're exactly the same. I used crushed washers from harbor freight for the head feed.

Progress was made!

So turns out I didn't think to go set the injbatteryadj tab for my new injectors. :ohdamn: LOL Set that accordingly and wouldn't you know it?! It started right up! Idled for a bit then died. Adjustments definitely need to be made but I was just happy to hear it run LOL.

Here's a log I'm definitely a noob with tuning and SD but I'm broke so I gotta figure it out 😂🤣🤣 Here's the log if anyone would like to look and provide input or help.

Started pulling apart the car to change the power steering rack. For those of you who have done this job recently, which retailer did you go with for a reman rack?

I used detroit axle if i recall correctly. Getting the sway bar back on was the worst part.

I got my long block fully assembled yesterday. I was able to drop it in today. But my friend dropped my black top cas on Saturday when he came over to give me a hand and i knew it was 50/50 on it working again. I primed the motor and no fuel LOL. I was 35 mins from my house so i'll bring my two spare CAS's and see if i can get it to fire tomorrow.

On my 1991 gsx. Straight swap, didn't have to adjust at all. I did take it to get aligned and of course, they fixed wherever I was off.
