Wanting More N/T Power [Merged 9-18-09]

I just bought a 95 Eclipse, something like 191k miles on it, I paid about 1.1k for it.

It was well maintained, as I know the kid I bought it from.

Its a non-turbo variant 2g, and the little 420a is good but not enough for me.

I don't ever wanna go turbo[I like a little kick, but i'm not a speed demon, I prefer good handling over straight speed], so I just need some help with a few bolt on questions.

Are the Tsudo N1 Ebay Exhausts any good?

What would you suggest for an Ebay Air Intake?

How about Ebay headers?

Also, my car has no wing/spoiler/whatever, and I really like the wings that hug tight to the window on the Talon, will that thing fit on my Eclipse?

I personally have a TSUDO N1 3" exhaust from ebay and it sounds great. It is also very affordable. I would suggest not to get an air intake, just get a good air filter for your stock box-i didnt notice to much of a difference with mine so i wasted my money. As for headers, if you do decide to get headers, i would not get ebay. I've had 3 buddies with ebay headers crack within 5000 miles or less. Megan racing makes a good product, ive run them for a few years without any problems at all.

Ebay headers and exhaust can be purchased cheaply for your car and they will be fairly high quality. Do a search for ebay exhaust and you will find a lot of threads about them for turbo cars. Simply read those threads and any name that is well recommended for the turbo cars will likely have a high quality variant for NT cars. IIRC the catback portion of a NT is actually the same as a turbo car as far as routing and hangers go but you will want smaller piping (in general) because you want to maintain exhaust velocity while turbo cars will have a tendency to perform better with massive flow.

eBay is hit or miss with just about anything you can get from there. I've heard the Tsudo isn't as high a quality as some, but have no personal experience. Ultimately it's your money and your car, you could try eBay and hope, or just go start with high quality from the beginning...the choice is yours.

As for an intake, where do you want your power?

Has anyone on here who is badmouthing ebay so far even bought an ebay exhaust? I have and it was not only a great deal but incredibly nice quality. Ebay is not hit or miss when you do your research and exhaust happens to be one area where ebay companies are blowing the old name brands out of the water. Intake pipes are in that category as well. Also when it comes to ebay headers I have heard nothing but good when it comes to ebay headers for NT cars and mixed reviews when it comes to EMs for turbo cars largely because turbo cars put way more abuse on exhaust components.

If you want to go with a budget minded build as I am, I suggest getting the japanimportshop tsudo n1. It is the highest quality knock off you can get. Buy the cheapest hard pipe and filter combo that they offer on eBay. You can always spray the pipe black to make things look nice. You will need new couplers and clamps because the ones that come in the package aren't the right size. Headers, I would invest in Megan racing. They are brand name but they are more budget minded yet are top quality. Hope that helps.

I'm looking for decent power, nothing crazy.

More then what the stock has, which is like what? 140 at the crank?

I figure with a header, exhaust and some kind of intake i'd be making 180ish?

I bought an Ebay exhaust about a year and a half ago and it's still going. It was an N1 style and it has such a deep tone I was glad it didn't sound like a Ricer. Also got a test pipe from them as well about the same time. Together they make a great pair.

As for all the other Ebay stuff yeah some not so good, just do your research and find out about the product and how people like it. There is alot of crap on there but there is also alot of great deals if you know how to find them.

No way simple bolt ons gain you 40 HP. Hell, even 20 is a stretch.

I have an ebay header, exhaust and downpipe on my esi talon and honestly if you leave the silencer on (if it even has one) it doesn't have that ugly pitch of a sound as for the header it has been doing it's job.
Give it a better flow if you get the full exhaust system as well.

i have a 1997 eclipse rs with theese mods on it obx racing adjustable cam gears, msd coil pack, msd super conductor wires, energy suspension solid motor mounts, a b and m short throw shifter, energy suspension shifter bushings, etc.. maybe more i dunno about LOL and a fresh and i mean fresh brand new crate 420a i took ac off and am only using power steering on my harmonic balancer so what else can i install on my eclipse to get more power....note there is no exauhst on it b ### just put new motor in and is the obx intake manifold reallly worth buyin??? thanks dsm 4 life:hellyeah:

do a tiny bit of searching and you will find most people are very unhappy with the OBX manifold, it is prone to cracking, and has many fitment issues, you would be better off just getting your current IM ported and polished. as for more power and upgrading...

one more question, do you have cam gears with stock cams?

one more question, do you have cam gears with stock cams?

You can actually get a hair better power and noticably better fuel economy by playing with the cam timing on the stock cams. IIRC it's +2* intake and -2* exhaust gains a little better grunt and a few MPGs

Someone correct me if I have it backwards.

just seems that if you are going through tha trouble of the cam gears, you would throw on after market cams while your at it, and get a LOT more grunt =P

so i jut purchased a 1999 eclipse and i dont really know anything about them. i recently had a mustang but i wanted a tuner car and its completley different. and i dont really know what is good and what is not. i am wanting to spend about 1500 dollars on bolt ons so just let me know what is the best thanks

Here is what you can get for $1500:

Walbro 255
Air Intake
Exhaust
Lighter Rims
Suspension

Just search the site to find more. There is an Upgrade path. Things you can do to make your car lighter. Everything you can think of, it is here in this forum. Use the search button and just browse around. You will be amazed by the amount of information that is compiled here.

If you want the most bang for your buck, swap and replace factory & smog restricting components. (i.e. header, exhaust, cat, intake, etc) There you would see the most performance gain. On a 420A honestly, theres not much that can SIGNIFICANTLY get you horsepower, but it will help. Also, small things like (clean TB, valve breather, seafoam flush) help too. :)

Auto parts stores should carry it like advance or autozone. There are a couple methods to use it.

1: Pour quart can into each cylinder via the spark plug holes and let it sit over night. Next morning suck out as much as you can and then start car. Let it run until the smoke stops then change oil and replace plugs.

2: SLOWLY spray or suck up the fluid into a vacuume port on the intake manifold while the car is running until all of the can is empty. Keeping the rpms around 1-1.5k. Replace plugs.

3. Both 1 and 2 for best clean. Number 2 first then number 1 to get the rest. Clean off the plugs after you suck it up and re use them for the second part then put in the new ones after it's all done.

you can also pour it into your gas tank to help clean the fuel system.

On another note, the exhaust components wont net you much hp right away. The are almost worthless if they are your first mods, but as you mod more and more you will see much greater improvements for them. Think of it like this, if you breath in through a straw, it wont be much difference if you blow that out through a straw or 3inch tube. But if you breathe in through a 3 inch tube then you will want to be blowing out of a 3 inch tube, if that makes sense... (go with 2.5 inch exhaust if u staying all motor though)

I think some mods listed best bang for the buck are the UDP, a CAI.., nitrous and turbo. But once again, the steps in the upgrade path section provide the best route for staying all motor, just use the search button, there is ton of info on this website.

You can even run SeaFoam in your oil prior to an oil change.

In my opinion, the best mods I have done haven't been power related. I wouldn't still be driving a DSM if it weren't for the small things that improve driving experience, such as tires, urethane roll stoppers, suspension, short shifter, (and all accompanying shifter modifications) &c... I prefer driving my current 2gnt over my previous turbo-cars that had not had such improvements made.

An UDP does provide a small but noticeable improvement in power everywhere; from idle to redline. Bullett (amongst others) have seen rather large gains by using an AFX ECU or MS. I believe Bullett even mentioned once that it was his opinion that MS should be one of the first power mods. done to an NA

I can believe that. Removing the factory choker that they call the ECU and replacing it with MSnS would be a huge gain by itself.
