timing belt broke while drivin, chance of bent valves?

Ok I was driving down the road going 30 mph barely pushing the gas and all of a sudden my timing belt broke and I shut the car off imediately. Did I mess anything up?

99.9% chance valves are bent and pistons have nicks in them. Get to taking that head off. Enjoy!

Listen once you tear into it, your going to be like, Rebuild time.... The smarter thing to do, is to buy a Used motor for around 200-300 and drop that thing in. What I did and will never look back, and the motor I got was just rebuilt. Just look around.

Yeah, I am in the middle in getting it towed to my place, but i was already in the middle of gettting things to rebuild my engine so should i still find another engine or take mine apart, see what damages i have and go from there?

Individual parts are expensive. You might find a deal on a broken down junker that doesn't have the same issue (bent valves etc.) so you might be able to take the two engines and make one that works?

Just throwing that out there, haven't looked into any of it.

Because $2-300 rebuilt motors are EVERYWHERE!!!! Dumbest advice I've ever heard!

Take the $300, go get the head rebuilt, spend another $180 on an eBay timing belt kit, slap the car back together, and call it a day!

My opinion but i will never buy anything to do with my timing from ebay, And well we will see, I havent pulled the head, but im doing that in a little bit and will let you know if anything happened, if there is damage, I am getting a diff head. Should i get a 6 bolt head?

The choice is up to you, but when I was in similar shoes, spun balance shaft bearings and deciding whether to buy a built engine or have mine rebuilt, I decided to reuse my current block and head and just build it up. That way you know exactly what is in it and you get to decide what goes in it. The only trick is finding a solid DSM shop in your area. I would never trust my engine to anyone that isn't thoroughly familiar with the 4G63.

And I agree with staying as far away from ebay as you can when it comes to timing components. OEM is expensive but I trust it.

I was in the same place as you a year ago. When I baught the car it was jumped a tooth in timing. Only a few valves were bent. I took the head off and sent it to a machine shop. It was about 300 bucks to fix my problem.

You have bent valves just send it to a machine shop they charge you 200-300 but you'll get new stem seals new valves and you'll be good. Just don't forget to get a new water pump now that you doing timing and get all new pulleys and this be a good time remove that balance shaft.

Utp a timing belt on it and check the compression. You might have lucked out. I have twice.

Im not bashing on ebay, You just dont know what your going to get some of the time. Is it worth building up the 7 bolt or should i find a 6 bolt? I know it depends on what i want to do with it but I am asking for advice.

what good does it do to spend your money and time replacing the motor with another used motor that you dont know if it will blow a timing belt next week

fix what you have and learn about the work, see if you can enjoy it

As someone said, if you do have to send your head out, and your going through all the work. You should replace all your belts, and water pump. It wouldn't hurt to replace head bolts and studs. I spent the extra 200 on stock parts to get it done right. That's where I started and now I'm doing my own build.

What are you nuts, I have bought 3 6 bolts for less than $200 in the past month. Complete engines. You just got to look around.

Idc what you think, All I know is that both my DSM's have very new engines in them . O you are in joilet... Wow maybe I could have shared my wealth of 6 bolt crap I don't need seeing how I have a abundence... but yeh.

1. I drove to indiana - Go ahead look up my spun bearing story, I had a $200 rebuilt 6 bolt in 3 days later .
2. Drove to wisconsin - Traded to a rockford DSM'r, for some blocks and heads.
3. Dixon IL - Traded for rebuilt 30k 7 bolt NA with nice internals from Brownfinger, a member on here.

As for the 6 bolt vs 7 bolt, both are great and "crankwalk" isnt as common as people on here make it seem. There are alot of 7 bolts throwing out enormous power with no crankwalking issues. Either way you go you will have a good engine you cant beat the good ole 4g63. Oh just to further the proof a 7 bolt is good i just sold a GST with the same 7 bolt engine that came from the factory with 200k miles on it and running strong.

Spend 3 hours and put a timing belt on it then check your compression. You may have gotten lucky and harmed nothing. I broke one and didn't bend anything. Give it a shot, worst case you have damaged pistons and valves. You wont know until you try.

Thanks for all your input, I Already was going to rebuild my engine, it just had to be a perfect time that my belt decided to say fu to me so im glad I got some input from my dsmrs. I Dont have a clue on what i will do, but I will let you guys know what i will do next, Tommorrow i have a long day getting dirty.

absolutely have bent valves I was doing 60 when mine broke and i bent all 16 my total cost to rebuild the whole top half was $400 so really the work is gonna be the worst thing

Bent for sure depends on how bad they are bent need to pull the head and see. Then go from there.
