Spyder Starter grind

Hello community. I have a 98 Eclipse Spyder with a 2.4 motor. I recently replaced the starter and in doing so it grinds badly. I’ve reinstalled it multiple times but the it’s always the same outcome. After many failed attempts I put washers to see if that did anything but that didn’t seem to work either .

Are you sure it’s the same as the starter you removed? Make sure it matches what kind of trans you have, auto or manual.

Yes it’s an exact match. It’s an automatic

If its an auto parts store starter, their books have all been wrong for years when it comes to the 4g63 and 4g64 starters, they seem to only give you the right one around half of the time, their books say that the auto and manual take the same starter and thats not correct, I usually tell them that its for a Talon or maybe a 1g and have them give me that starter instead, there is a long nose starter and a short nose starter, you likely have one thats too short, if you or the store has your original compare it to the one thats in there now, pull it off and set them side by side if possible, do not continue to try to operate the starter, you will tear up the flywheel and need to replace it if you do.

I cant tell from the pictures that Vatozone has on their site for that part number, they have every angle but the one needed, go figure. Look at these pictures and you will see that there is a difference between the starters, the obvious difference in the pictures is the size of the opening where the gear is on them, one is way bigger than the other one, these might just be stock photos and might be just the angles but I can tell you that they are very different on the length of the front part of the starter from auto to manual. I can tell you for a fact though that Vatozone has the wrong numbers in the book.

Starter plate broke off when the the mechanic I took it to removed the trans. It didn’t grind before then. Would a spacer on each bolt mimic what the starter plate did ?

Possibly, definitely seems better than bolting on without it. Is that what you meant by you tried putting washers in the first post? Hopefully someone will chime in that knows better than I do.

Yeah . I might have to go to the junkyard and see if I can get one off a junker. What’s the proper term for the plate called?

Try kannapolis auto parts, at least he will know what a starter plate is.

So a mechanic changed the trans and broke the plate and it’s been grinding since then? Or did it work for a while?

I took the trans to a mechanic to get it manual swapped, he didn’t do it.

I took my car back and he gave me most of my automatic parts broken. The starter plate was in two pieces and I didn’t realize how important it was so I threw the other piece away.

I installed the automatic trans back in with the OEM starter and it cranked fine but then it started grinding after a while.

I think your next step in fixing this is deciding if you want to do the manual swap yourself or not, and then proceed with pulling the trans and replacing the starter plate with a new one matched to whichever trans you choose.

It took me 6 days total to reinstall my auto trans without any prior knowledge or experience. I don’t feel confident enough to install a manual trans on my own.

You do need that starter plate or the missing piece needs to be installed under the starter to get the right shim on it.

I’m going to order from STM tuned. Those silver metal cylinder pieces that fit at the bottom sides of the start plate. Any idea where I can get those ?

I believe you’re talking about the dowel pins. They are important also if you don’t have them. If you’re already making an order with STM, they should have them also.

I can’t seem to find the right ones. I have a 4G64 and from what it looks like, STM only sells 4G63 dowel pins. Can they fit a 4G64?

As far as I can tell, they are the same. I searched that part number on a Mitsu parts website with my vehicle selected as a 1999 Spyder GS 2.4 and it pulled it up. Maybe someone with access to ASA can do an extra check to verify for us.

The dowels would be the same, they can both use the same transmission.
