Starter grinding after bellhousing swap

1992 laser rs turbo AWD

My starter grinds when I go to start my car. I just replaced my bellhousing after the other one broke. I did not remove the flywheel but i was wondering if there are different style starters for the awd cars?

Nope, Starters are all the same, AWD and FWD...

try some washers on the starter bolts maybe it will help level out the starter so it wont grind. just a thought

Have you tried to move the starter around, the bolt holes for the starter are slightly elliptical which allows you to move the starter up, down, left, and right a small amount. I would see if possibly the starter is to far away from the flywheel teeth, causing your grinding noise.

theres not much room at all to adjust up and down ive tried it.

well i guess im gonna sell it or part it out ill take 1200 anyone?

AWD and FWD have different size flywheels and starter plates.

This will do absolutely nothing but make the bolt not thread into the starter far enough. It will in no way effect the starter's ability to reach the flywheel.

The bolt holes for the starter DO NOT determine the location of the starter. The hole in the starter plate is what locates the starter. The starter fits tightly into the hole in the starter plate and won't move from there.

If you didn't change the flywheel or starter plate than there is no reason for this. You might not have the starter centered into the hole in the starter plate or the solenoid might not be kicking the gear out all the way. That is about the only possibility here.

I had problems with my conversion from non turbo to turbo, need to get the correct starter plate.

I reused the starter plate so it should be the same as before, I tested the starter Its good.

Also I did just get the bellhousing swaped which means the trans was torn apart to replace it do you think the shop that fixed it assembled my trans wrong???

The transmission has nothing to do with the starter other than mounting. The starter engages the teeth on the flywheel to crank the engine, nothing in the trans is involved. You could literally start the engine with just the bell housing attached.

The only possibilities are misaligned trans or faulty starter.

Ok just checking I thought that could be it since I did everything else FML

If i was missing a dowl would this make it grind, Havent check to see if they are there.

Also is it possible to put the trans together wrong so it makes it to hard to turn that the starter cant turn it?
