I have a 97 gst automatic that I just purchased. When I bought it I thought the starter was just bad as you could hear it spin and not touch anything. Turned out that the starter ground the teeth off of the converter and it's self. So I replaced the starter with one from AutoZone for an automatic fwd turbo. Then I replaced the torque converter with an ipt high stall. Everything went back together now it sounds like the starter is just barely touching the tc and it obviously grinds. Everything is in line and tight. The starter plate is there and lined up. Connections are good to the starter. The previous owner had a used trans out of a 95tsi swapped in. The only thing out of the ordinary I noticed is that the oil seems to be filled two or the quarts high which I will be fixing tomorrow. Any ideas on what this could be would be greatly appreciated.

I've looked at almost all the similar problems and No one has posted solutions so hopefully I can get one.

Is what way is it not touching the TC? Is it in the diameter of the cog its self or is it in the forward and Back movement of it?

You have to match the starter with the transmission, even if it was a swapped out one. This is where the previous owner failed in doing the swap and you got a busted up starter for results.

Where you did an aftermarket TC, you're gonna have to find a starter to match the gear ring of that TC.

I do not think it's in and out as much as up and down.

Starter does match because I made sure that the new one fit to that tranny being as that everything is the same no change. Ring gear for the converter was set for the 97gst. This car is an automatic and always has been. The starter is for an automatic

Anyone have any suggestions?

Are you sure all is well with the starter plate? All the bolts are tight on the flex plate and the TC? Is the ring gear more chewed in any particular area or is it being taken down pretty evenly?

Just to give everyone an update I figured the problem out. The starter has a lot of room to move in my car , more than other cars Ive worked on so I had to hold it in the correct postion from underneath while someone else tightened it from above. Thank you for your help.

It shouldn't. That's what the starter plate is for. It correctly locates the starter in the proper place. Either you have the wrong starter plate on there, or someone grinded the hole larger.
