Yeah so I sound like a few others on hear, but I really haven't found a clear answer on this. I had recently purchased a 99 gsx automatic and thought it needed a starter. I heard the starter run before i bought it and figuared it was the wrong starter. I went and got a new starter and replaced it. Started cranking it, sure enough, the grinding noise was still there. So I went back to the auto parts , got another starter, and tried that one. Still the same grinding noise as before. I checked the flywheel on the car and found no teeth missing, but the starter side of the flywheel was chewed up. It almost acts like the starter isn't engaging. like it is only catching a little bit of the flywheel. Any ideas any one?

I had this IDENTICAL problem. Make sure that the bolts that hold the trans to the engine are tight, also loosen your starter to where it will move, and push it towards to flywheel while tightening, these are the two things i found wrong with mine. after doing both, problem solved :)

Did you pull the motor or trans when you tightend these up or did you leave them in. Also did you disconnect anything, like any members or mounts? Did you just open the hood and start finding the bolts and start tighting them? It looks just like the starter was only catching like an 1/8 of an inch of the flywheel (which is mostly grinded off now). Did this happen to you?

i had this problem and it turned out the parts store sold me the wrong one. they sold me one for a 2.4l check the part #s cause the two look exactly the same but one kick out further.

Can you verify that there's an alignment plate between the engine and transmission? If this plate isn't there it can be hard to get the starter properly located.

The is the plate supposed to be very thin? If so it is there. I brought it to the shop I work at so they can take a look at it to come up with some ideas. They think It may be the flywheel but again, there are no teeth missing or broken. I have a very good feeling that it is some type of alignment issue.

does anyone know what the starter is supposed to look like that would go in this car. Advanced auto has one that has an oval hole in the nose cone, but that isn't the style in my car right now. What is the right one:hmm::ohdamn:

i found that there are A lot of different staters for eclipse's

Try buying a used one from dsmgraveyard or mitsubishi graveyard or a part out from a local club member or OEM from JNZ.

Well found the problem after bringing it to the local dealership. The torque converter was put on backwards. Which ended up grinding away at the thrust bearing and cap. Only available fix you might ask, new motor. cheapest new long block I found was from overbore.com based out of hudson falls new york.

I have this problem also with my 91 talon I bought from a kid who said it needed a flywheel. It had an autozone starter on it when i bought the car which would not even turn the engine over at all. I thought the starter was bad and decided to buy a Napa starter. I can start the engine up but with grinding so severe I instantly turned off the key. I can turn the engine by hand with a half inch drive ratchet with the starter off but not with the starter on. Some how the torque converter/flywheel assembly has been drawn closer to the starter causing a clearance problem. My plan is to replace the torque converter/flywheel assembly and the flex plate. If this Is the wrong approach to the problem someone please let me know before I spend the money. Thanks.

before you go that far, make sure the transmission is tight on the engine (meaning the bolts that join the two are tight), i had this problem CONSTANTLY...I tightened the bolts (two were loose) and found that my starter was not the right shape (mfg problem), and replaced it under warranty, the problem is gone, as has not surfaced yet. thats also sitting outside in -35 degrees in the winter, no grinds :)

This turned out to be a wrong starter issue. Three auto parts store had a starter that the nose was longer in length that the factory one that was supposed to be on it. Since the factory one wasn't there when I bought the car, I had nothing to go by until I bought a '92 eclipse with a bad motor and discovered the differance in the starters. Ended up pulling the motor out of the Talon and dropping it into the Eclipse. Hope my son appreciates the car because it's been a pain in the butt !!!

Yeah, it's because I'm still working on the car. I bought it for a project when my son got his license so there has been no rush in fixing it. Also I bought a house in that time so that took precedent over the car but I thought that I would at least give everyone an update on what I found. My current problem is pulsating idle which I have to research and fix otherwise to the shop it goes. I replaced the end clutch for the overdrive issue and tomorrow I'm gonna take it out and test drive it so I will let you know how that turned out as well. Thanks for the reply.

After the end clutch rebuild, the overdrive works like a dream goes in and out nice and smooth. Thanks IPT Trans for the great video !!! The surging idle went away after I got back from my test run. It was doing it when I pulled it in the garage and put it in park. I shut it off for a few minutes, restarted the car and it stopped pulsing. (SO WEIRD !!!) Even after I revved her up shut it off again and restarted it. Anyway, we'll see what happens in the future to come after I hand the car off to my son this month. I want to thank everyone for there input on my issues. Everyone has been so helpful and if I have a tip for you, I gladly drop it for you. Everyone take care.
