Okay so I pulled the turbo. Oil and dirt and grime.

The comp wheel is toast. Housing isn't great but probably usable. I can still see machining lines under the contacting area. I am trying to find a new shaft/turbine wheel, because it has some minor contact as well. It's probably usable but not ideal.

If I can't find the turbine shaft I will probably clean it up and put a new comp wheel and rebuild kit into it. Should work okay, but it wont be perfect.

I have leads on lots of evo turbos but dont want to downgrade.

I found the turbine wheel, compressor wheel and rebuild kit for about $250....
so do I do that or just buy a chinese big 16g? any thoughts, opinions?

I should mention that the replacement comp wheel is kingugawa, rebuild kit is generic/ebay, and the turbine/shaft is generic China.

So basically it would be a Chinese internals turbo when I am done. So why not just rock a Chinese turbo for the same price or cheaper?

Ordered: 1 kinugawa t3 turbine shaft, 1 kinugawa t04e compressor wheel, 1 turbo lab America rebuild kit. Looking for local places to balance it. There is a place in northwestern wisconsin that does it for $55, but that means another week probably.

Might see if they can turn it around quickly for me. Otherwise its probably going to be DEC before I can get this car back together.

Glad to hear that you didn't go full Chinese trash. You can get some rest knowing that it's at least partially quality parts.

I wouldn't necessarily call Kinugawa quality parts... I think it's just a Chinese brand name. That would mean the wheels and shaft are Chinese. The rebuild kit is probably Chinese, but I paid an American middleman to have "America" in the name of the business I bought from (Turbo Lab of America).

I wont be able to sell it with a clear conscience... Any potential buyers (in the future) will have to be okay with the components I selected...

So, you may have seen my post trying to get info about the turbo I took off this car.

It's a Precision DSM flanged turbine housing, 50 trim compressor.

I ended up with the wrong turbine for this turbo when sourcing components for rebuild. Now I am trying to figure out if this housing can be machined to accept the turbine wheel I have.

Alternatively I could swap it to T3 housing of proper size, but that would require a new manifold, o2 housing, and likely some exhaust rework. Also considering cutting my losses and buying a used 16g, which should be an easy swap.

The compressor wheel I found is correct, as is the rebuild kit.

This turbine is 56x65 and the original is 51x65. Shit!

After speaking with G-pop shop the best plan of action for saving this turbo is likely going to be sending it off to them. I suspect some material from the turbine wheel has deposited itself into the turbine housing bore (it doesnt seem to match any available wheels and seems possible judging by surface finish inside the bore). They said that is possible, and it can be cleaned up on a lathe. They also carry the replacement turbine, so they could do all the work needed to "save" this turbo.

I plan to ship it out to them after work today.

The other plan I am considering consists of throwing that turbo away. Then, swapping my T3 BB Garrett 50 trim setup from the silver street car onto this car. Manifold, turbo, o2 housing, and downpipe. Then I can run that turbo on this car until it pukes, and also upgrade my silver car (which has the built engine) to an HX40 or similar sized turbo on a Morrison divided T3 manifold.

I really need to figure out what the LONG TERM plan is for all of these cars... If this one truly becomes a drag car, then why not upgrade it now and forget about changing the silver car....

Well, I am a dummy. Sent the turbo off... probably should have thrown it away. Rebuild starts at 395, plus wheels/shaft, I am probably looking at $700+. For a turbo I dont even want.

I regret it already. If I decline the service I still have to pay $75 for accessment according to their website.

So best case scenario I wasted $100. Worst case I spend 7-800 on an ancient turbo that doesn't suit my needs that well anyway. Probably couldn't resell for more than 3-400, if I had to guess.
Why me so dumb?

Okay, so G-pop shop wants $600 for a new CHRA with a billet comp wheel in this turbo. I told them to hold off.

back to trying to decide if I should pull the 2.3L and put it in this car with a big turbo for drag racing, or just build the 7 bolt 2.0L in it, and add a big turbo.

Either way I want to push more power on the drag car than the 50 trim will flow - so do I cut my losses now? hmmm...

So I got more information from G-pop.

Full rebuild with new CHRA and billet compressor wheel - $600
Full rebuild w/ new CHRA and cast compressor wheel - $475
Full rebuild and upgrade to PTE 62/62 spec - $800

I am leaning towards the PTE 62/62 spec upgrade. Should be good for over 60lb/min.

Changed it up. Purchased a holset hx40 7+7 60mm comp, 10 blade turbine, aka Super 40.

Should be good for a couple extra ponies. Now to figure out what car it will go on - the silver car is most likely.

This black auto awd might be on the back burner until I race my neighbor in his ZR1 vette. After I show him a decent race in the street car, I may end up building a dedicated drag car. But that is a tall order. His vette makes 750 factory ponies and 700 factory foot lbs. His best run to date is low 11s with no traction.

I have never been to the strip, and if things work out right, I'll get the boot on day 1 (lacking safety equipment).

Does anyone think this PTE 50 trim is worth selling? Or do I let gpop just keep it?

If you think you’ll get booted at the track, get the most you can before full send. This is what I mean

Easy off the line and do a 3rd gear wot pull so you can make any adjustments tuning wise. Once you’re satisfied with the data log, just work on your launch and don’t bother with the light and let the other car go first so you’re not distracted. Lowering your tire pressure will help with your 60’. I run 20psi tire pressure and I think some run as low as 15psi. If you’re using nlts, practice the first to second shift since the rest are easy imo. Once you get that down then full send! When I ran my first 11 second pass, they gave me a warning but Idk if that depends on the track.

Thanks for the advice! I am also pretty curious. I have done a bit of launch and 1-2 shift runs when I was working out 0-60 mph times (3.63 best time - not great), but that was on a street, not a track. I also wasnt using NLTS, so that is something to train on before the time comes. I did find that lowering my tire pressure to 25 helped quite a bit, but didn't venture much lower than that on the street, she got pretty mushy on turns.

I will probably try to get some dyno time before she sees the street in the spring. I have tuned many people's cars on a dynojet (never a dsm funny enough) but never my own. Then basically follow your suggested plan of getting the car down that day. Launch, then 3rd gear, then putting it all together (hopefully ) when its time to line up against the vette. I have also seen him spin in place with literally zero grip so maybe I will get lucky and will humble him a bit.. Classic American Muscle guy with zero understanding of what a 4 cylinder and turbo is capable of.

We are good buddies. His car was north of $130k.

His best 0-60 mph is 3.2 seconds, so he has had a few decent launches... I bet him a 6er of Miller Lite. Its a fine pilsner .

Been emailing Matt at Morrison fab. Leaning towards his divided t3 hot parts kit. Might make for decent spool on the big old hx40. Maybe @1990TSIAWDTALON could share some info about spool on hx40? Like a log or two?

I'm on an open T3. My son runs rhe divided T3 on a HX35. It spools really quick. My open T3 is late but DAM....she hits hard.
Have to ask my son if he has any logs to share. Happy to share mine if it would be any help tho.

I waited on my GSX. It was for sale for $2600 but I waited....and waited....thought he sold it, then I got the ring. Picked up the "Phantom" 90 GSX for $1600 with the VRSF FMIC still in the box. She is running pretty good after fixing all the little things. Took me to work all week last week!

I am open to seeing any logs with hx40s, but specifically I am doing twin scroll, with a 2.3L, e85, 5 spd. I have seen several 2.0 hx40 dyno charts. Only a couple with divided setups.

Matt wasn't sure of anyone using the stock holset 16cm housing on a proper twin scroll. With the added benefit of a little extra displacement, I think it will do okay. He mentioned that he is planning that same setup on his own car right now.

I have been looking for a 14cm housing but I can only find aftermarket housings in that size. I really dont want to kill my mid range and I am worried the hx40 will do exactly that.

If it does, I will just put the hx40 on the auto car and put my dbb 50 trim back on the street car. 400 ft lbs before 4000 rpm is hard to let go!
