hello every one. my name is matt and i have decided to get rid of all my mustangs and mustang parts and get a dsm. my first car was a 91 gsx and i loved it, but 10 years ago i didnt know what i know now. i plan to daily drive this car and throw some small performance into it. im torn between the 1st and 2nd gens. ive been reading the forums and all the stories of cw. as far as quality of the stock parts, and the price and availability of performance parts which is better?

2g all the way they are way better looking 1gs look super old like a 70s car UGLY but they do run better....get what you think will work best for what you car wanting to do

Well said.

In the end you can make both look good with time and dedication.

Spoken like a true ricer :D.

They are right though ultimately it's up to you. You do sound alot like how I felt a couple years ago when I bought mine. I wanted something that could run 13s with a few bolt-ons while staying smog legal in CA, AND get decent gas mileage when cruising.

I ended up getting a 1g, for one I like to drag race more than road race (talking tracks here people not street), and the largest factor was the 14b and 6 bolt. I wanted something bullet proof and didn't want to have to swap turbos to get some respectable E/Ts.

I had a chance to get a stock 95 AWD talon in decent shape but needed some work for a simple trade (for a wrecked mustang coincidentally), or buy a nice 91 AWD talon for $900 that needed a trans. I went with the 91

I look back at it now and don't regret it at all. It had 106k miles on it and I've put 20k miles on it so far and despite what others say about DSMs this one has been damn reliable (knock on wood). Only had to up the boost and put on an exhaust to get in the 13s, now has a ported o2 housing, even less restrictive exhaust and a supra side mount and it's probably even faster now.

Gets 29 mpg freeway and averages 20 with mixed driving (as long as you stay out of the boost)...

The only thing I wish this had that a 2g does is a little more compression for more efficiency, I really have to drive it softly (little to no boosting) to get decent mileage.

That said I look at 2g's and am so glad I don't have:

- cheap vibrating ugly interiors
- un-framed door windows which flop around like a 70's E-body mopar
- ugly dash
- crappy feeling shifter
- small shit T-25
- possible crank walk

They boy have pro's and con's, just matters which pros you like most and which cons are deal breakers...

yeah dude you have to go by which one YOU personally like better. my first dsm was a cleeeeean 2gb gsx, i loved it sooo much. it was a sexy, sexy car, and i swear girls cant help but look twice at those things. plus, all i had was an injen intake and an axle-back exhaust, and that thing screamed. i beat tons of swapped hondas and v6's in that thing.

now a daily drive a 1ga, and i love it too. its not quite as good looking (in my opinion), but it does have its own cool look, i personally think the old-school sports car lines of the 1ga are badass. its just a mean lookin car, especially if you sleep the headlights half way down.

with both cars, your gonna have at least some problems, thats just something you gotta accept when you get a dsm. but, parts are pretty damn cheap (especially for the 1g's) when you know where to look.

and they are both going to have that awesome performance feeling you get with the turboed all wheel drive. 2g's weigh more but make 20 more hp so id say theyd be damn near head to head in a stock vs stock race.

so yeah, pretty much, it all comes down to which one you think looks better, cause your gonna have about the same performance (especially since it will be a lightly modified daily driver).
but i dunno, id have to say get a 1ga, who doesnt love those pop-ups, come on!! plus, a 1ga will have an EPROM ECU, and a 6 bolt. remember, 6 bolts are good to like 400+WHP on STOCK INTERNALS!! thats outrageous!

i mean honestly, how many car makers can say that their stock internals can handle DOUBLE the factory HP?!?!?
damn dsm's are so awesome LOL

A 2g has a stronger drivetrain, an engine with smaller rods than a 6-bolt 1g, but has an overall better engine. The engine has a full main girdle, a lighter crank(which are capable of 1000hp), stock for stock a 2g will spool the same turbo faster and make more power at the same psi and rev faster, has a better designed head that flows more, and right now i can find at least 100 people on this site that make 500whp+ on the stock bottom end. A 1g does not have NOT have better cams or throttle body. The 2g has a throttle body that was actually matched to its power level, unlike the 1g, and the same goes for the cams, so when you start going faster you just swap a 1g throttle body and some good AFTERMARKET cams. Did i mention that the whole suspension in a 2g is....just plain better. A 1g has more tuning options, other then that the same parts are available for either car, neither has more, neither has less. The stock turbo on a 1g(14b) is better than a 2g(T25), the difference in spool is small, very small. The 14b can actually make(more) power, there are people running 11's with them, the T25 is a joke, it run out of steam so early and its made out of plastic. A 2g is a little heavier. The MAF on a 2g is superior. A 2g will rust. a 1g has a little stronger fuel pressure regulator. A 2g has a higher flowing exhaust manifold, that wont crack. Only some 1gs have 4-bolt, all 2gs have 4-bolts. Only 95 and some 96's have eproms, but some 97's and all 98-99 have flashable ecus, and an evo 8/9 ecu swap is only a couple pin swap away. There is though a free speed density p[rogram for 1gs. All cars have recalls, all cars have problems. Dont even worry about crankwalk(a silly name that ricers made up to replace the term "thrust bearing failure"), in all reality crankwalk is extremely overrated, less than 1% of all 2gs have had any report of it.

Did i miss anything?

If your worried about mostly performance and like the more rugged an race car look of the 1g then go that route

1gs are lighter outta the box and are fully blown race car from the jump, from the look of the dash to the slim body.

If your worried about styling an that sick wide body look the 2g has and looks are more important to you but you still want to run a 13 on the street without breakin you bank then go with that.

I have owned both I LOVE BOTH but i own a second gen now cause i want something that looks pimp as f***.

Either car you can make fast with enough money i just think 1gs are easier because the weight difference an the 6both is already there.

Being that it's your first DSM, I'd definitely go 1g. They are a little easier to learn on, a bit less complicated and it's a bit more tricky to destroy a 6-bolt. Much easier to mod and get more power out of.

If you're going based on looks, go 2g, unless a 1g is more appealing to you looks wise, then it is a no brainer. The other advantage to the 2g is that parts are a bit easier to find. As our 1g's approach 20-years old, parts, especially new and OEM are becoming a bit harder to come by. I anticipate in the next couple years early 2ga parts will be hard to get as well. As for aftermarket, you should be fine for a while, though some of that is getting harder to find as well.

Buy an Evo

/thread

Did you read the thread?

That doesn't answer the question unless evo came in 1g and 2g versions. I am pretty sure he isn't buy an evo because its more expensive then a DSM. Thats the lure of DSM, fast and cheap. If he wanted a brand new car or relatively new AWD with a 4g63 then get an evo.

As long as he gets a DSM im happy BUT since were picking sides im 1G all the way!!!

I drove a few 2g's na and awd or fwd, none of them feel the same as a 1g, it makes me feel like I'm driving a chevy truck with a bench seat. The interior geometry is all jacked up on top of that.
1g seats are perfect for daily driving,

Ya I read the thread. It was a joke man.

But to me DSMs are all the same. Evo is just faster out of the box, cheaper tuning available, nicer interior, plus 2 more doors....it's cheap like a 2g true, but the seats alone make up for it.

If I could do it all over again I'd buy a 1g shell and build it from scratch. Having to build my 2g and carry a loan on it sucks balls. :notgood: And if I had to carry a loan on a car I was modding I'd buy a clean Evo.

Think of it this way since you were into mustangs, 5.0 LX coupe or 5.0 GT from the same era? The 1st gens are like the LX coupes. You see a clean one on the road nowadays and know the driver means business. Only look he's going for is mean and fast, no extras, all business. Hate to say it but "Original Gangster".
