Sandblasting the valve cover? [Merged 11-8] sand glass bead beads media baffle grit

If you grind the top of the rivet off, then you can place the baffle back on what is left of the rivets. Then weld a same amount of filler rod on top of each rivet. Then hit it with a hammer mushrooming it over.

I had thought of taping the valve cover and using some screws as well, but just never really thought it a good idea. Would really suck if one vibrated loose and dropped into the valvetrain. But then again . . . I'm a bit paranoid :)
It's good to be paranoid, that's exactly why you don't put screws in because they will come loose over time and wind up where they shouldn't be.

So what do you do to keep the JB weld from coming off and falling into the engine followed by the screws.

:beatentodeath:
There's always a possibilitie somthing can go wrong, there is always that "what if" I will post some pics of what I mean tomorrow, it is also possible for the baffle in its stock form to fall off,its happend before. :beatentodeath:

Wow, that's pretty funny.
I'm looking forward to seeing what other pearls you come up with for as long as you last here.

Steve

 anyway these are the steps that my friend has taken..tap the valve cover, loctite (red) in the screws after that a dab of jb weld, I highly doubt that there going to vibrate out after that, you have to remember loctite is what holds all you vital engine bolts on?? I dont really see any other way of reinstalling the baffles unless you rivet them back on?

That's hella ironic, I painted mine almost exactly the same as your black one. To get the textured look I used bed liner and then duplicolor metalic black and cleared over that with 500 degree clear and baked it for about 4-7 minute intervals in the oven at 200degrees or so. Cant complain, it looks pimp.

How do they powdercoating companies avoid this when media blasting? Are any of them bolting these down to an old head so nothing can get on the inside?

They don't avoid the problem; they hand-wave it away. "Don't worry, we clean it really well before we send it back to you".

Using an old head wouldn't really fix the problem, either; you'd have paricles getting past the oil cap, the half-moon, etc. You could make a jig for the job, but honestly, what vendor is going to bother making a sealed jig for a single application like this? :)

I realize the average shop that would media blast would not do this, but someone that specializes like bonehead performance might. The halfmoon stays on the head side so that wouldn't be a problem and the gasket could be glues to the head. I'd think it would keep out 99% of all that crap. Just a thought I had.

I just recently had my motor re-done by RRE.. I purchased a powercoated valve cover from Bonehead performance to dress up the new motor.. I took it down to RRE and they refused to put the cover on the car.. When I asked why they shook it in front of me and you could hear sand on the inside.. I really thought bonehead would know better than media blasting.. Da well.. $100 piece of junk... I could take off the baffles and get it welded.. But now I'm hearing thats no good?? this sucks...

Hi, i was just wondering if removing the baffle will cause any problems? i thought it might cause more oil to come out of the breather filter or pcv.
Please let me know because i will be running a valve cover without a baffle.

thanks

I know its relatively easy and cheap to buy a new valve cover. But I am kind of wondering myself because one of my valve covers has loose baffles, and I dont want them coming off on there own while the engine is running. Has anyone actually run for a while without the baffles.

The reason is because i sandblasted my valve cover and then powder coated it. I removed the baffle to remove all the sand from inside the baffle area.
Any inputs welcome.

You'll lose a lot of oil out of the PCV and breather. You can try it but I don't think it will work to well.

I bought a valve cover off someone locally. When I got it off him, I didn't ask whether it had been sandblasted or not, but after talking to him this morning, it turns out that it was.

I know the dangers of running a vc that has been mediablasted like this, so I'm wondering what I can do now to ensure that there is 0 media in it still. I really dont want to risk my motor in any way.

Also, how does one shave a valve cover?

soak it in a parts cleaner and scrub the hell out of it. pay close attention to the small nooks and crannies that the media can still be in.

soak it in a part's washer and soak it some more, its very hard to comepletly clean
a blasted VC.

Get a Dremel or something similar with a couple different bits and grind down the letters on the vc.

I agree with them ,soak the hell out of it,then soak it some more ,mine was sandblasted and i have had no problem for over 40 000kms so.just after u soak it us a clean rag scrub it then Rince then use a dremal with a soft wire tip on it to ensure u get everything out, thats what i did.
