Hood Pins [Merged 11-8]

I am going to install my VIS OEM style carbon fiber hood tomorrow night and I was wondering if anyone that has installed this pair of hood pins could help me out.

I am looking for the distance from the top of the radiator support to the top of the pin.
Or I could I get the measurement from the top of the top bolt to the top of the pin.

This could help me get my install done fast and without possibly messing something up.
Someone let me know if they can help me out. Thanks.

Why do you need to measure it? Drill holes in your radiator support, install the hood pin bolts, put some paint or toothpaste on top of the bolt and slowly place your hood on it. Open the hood, drill holes in your CF hood from the bottom (do it very slowly, used the smallest drill bit and the slowest RPM you have on your drill) and install your hood pins.

Because it would make it a lot easier. The geometry of the hood closing on the pins at the right hight can help me out. Having the pin at the right height when I go to make the mark for drilling will be perfect.

Damn I don't have Sparco Hood Pins. I know what you are talking about though and how it would help you. I wish I knew when I went to install. It would have helped a hella lot. Good luck, hopefully someone helps you out.

If you say so... this has been done many times, and the most accepted way is the way I told you. Measuring has room for error, you can't anticipate the slope of the hood because the top part of the hood is not flat, compared to the bottom. Sorry, I can't help you further, don't have measurements for you.

Good luck with your project.

Better yet, use both methods. ROFL

Aight. I expected more from this forum but it's whatever. Sometimes threads take time.

A search for 'hood pins' will give you 415 threads. Even if 2% of those help you, you won't need to start another thread about installing hood pins.

There is a tech about installing hood pins in the Tech Guide. There is also a tech article on VFAQ about installing hood pins on a DSM.

I already gave you the easiest way to install hood pins. Is there a reason why you are trying to re-invent the wheel when this has already been done by hundreds, if not thousands, of DSMers?

What exactly did you expect from this forum?

Measuring hood pins and then installing it is not a way to do it, if you feel so strong about doing it that way, go ahead and post back about how you messed up your measurements, couldn't factor the angle of the hood from top and how you ruined your new carbon fiber hood.

A simple reason why you can't use someone else's measurements is because they may decide to install their hood pins at a different location that yours. So not only will you need a radiator support to top of hood measurement, but also a fender to radiator support where hood pin bolt is installed measurement.

Here is a pic of my car with the hood pins that I have.

If you install your hood pins at the location where I have them, you'll need to cut the bolt short and take your headlights out. Read my posts for more info on that here - http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=271180&highlight=hood+pins

Well, from all my searching 80% of people put their Sparco pins here:

You didn't mention anywhere in your posts about installing your hood pins in that location. Hopefully someone will give you some measurements, but personally I wouldn't do it based only on measurements.

I have a VIS OEM-spec carbon fiber hood as well as Sparco hood pins. I have my pins installed in the location you say 80% of people do.

As far as installation goes, I used basically the same method DGajre described. Just take your time marking/measuring your drill point and drill slowly. If you drill too fast the carbon can overheat and hairline cracks will develop around the hole. They'll look like spider veins.

Other than that, you're good. Its really not as bad as you think. I remember I was a little nervous about messing up a brand new hood too but its easy once you get started.

Good luck! :thumb:

Thanks man. I've always liked your car. I've looked at it numerous times on this forum. :thumb:

I have them on my CF hood, I will post a pic. I beleive these are the worst Hood pins I have ever used, they come open way to easy, I use a zip tie to hold them closed. and they are misserable to keep them ligned up. But if you want to install them good luck here is a pic of them on my CF hood.
