Hood Pins [Merged 11-8]

the pins that are on your hood right now are actually pretty high quality. They're the same ones I installed on mine. what's wrong with them???

Nothing is wrong with them, they just look like girl's hair pins. I don't even know if that is they way it is supposed to be installed. I prefer the flat install like other hoods, nothing sticking out. Maybe I'm being too anal about it.

The hood pins you are asking about are not locking hood pins. They will look the same as the ones you have except for it having a "ring" type instead of the "hair pin" style you have. By the way, do you have any daytime pics of that hood, it looks sweet.

I know they don't "lock", but from the descriptions I found they flip over and hold the hood in place and I'm trying to figure out how they hold the hood in place. I'll just order the damn thing and figure it out. If I don't like it then at least I have the black scuff plates and jam nuts instead of the shiny one.

No I don't have any day pics yet, I have to charge my digital camera, we moved and I can't find the charger. :toobad: I got a lot of other stuff to my car and I haven't taken any pics yet, which is why my gallery is empty. :(

The silver Sparco's will rust at the pin/loop area. Mine did.

The ones with the cotter pins, or "hair pins" as previously called, are of much better quality than the ones you are thinking about buying. The way those second ones hold down the hood is that the straight pin slides through a hole in the rod that comes through the hood, then the ring flips over and sits up against the pin on the other side of the hole, which is supposed to hold everything in place. The only problem with that design is that over time with the ring gets more and more worn out it will become really easy to move and when you hit a bump it can flip over and then your hood pins fall out, and woosh, there goes your hood over your car and smashed into a million pieces by the car behind you. Stick with the cotter pins, they are much more reliable.

Yes I am worried about someone stealing my pins. I'm so paranoid that I have another sealed pack of hood pins in my glove compartment. :( I thought about getting the lanyard cables (or whatever they are called), but someone can still take the pins out and steal them.

The last thing I want is the hood flying open, so I guess the flip style hood pins from ebay are out.

Wow, those aerocatch pins are nice. I don't know how I could cut that much material off from the hood? I like the locking ones and they are black. :thumb:

i put mine on and i got hood pins off ebay the kind that stay on your hood and dont come off. i think these will cover your old holes and look better

The pins he is talking about are the same pins I have in the garage...similar to these:

Just search Hood Pins Eclipse and you will find more. Even though I really like the AeroCatch pins, I too am wondering about how they will work on an Eclipse hood. And at $86 non-locking and $97 locking, that's quite a lot to spend on something I might not use.

If the other pins don't work out (hole coverage-wise), they make those grenade style hood pins with the wire so they won't be stolen.

It looks like the scuff pad might be around the same size.

I have a Vis hood coming tomorrow and I already have a set of sparco hood pins. Could somebody please reply with some good instructions on how to install these hood pins. The instructions I found are very broad and I am very edgy about installing these pins. I need to know how to drill the holes, where to drill.. all that. Thank you in advance..

On a 2g, you can use the holes that are already there...just remove the rubber 'thingies' and use those holes. I also have the sparco pins

Mine:

Wow, didn't realize that spot.. That's great.. and about drilling in the hood. Is there a certain way to do it or tips for it??? I've seen people screw it up and then they get the cracks in the hood branching off of the drill point...

Use the smallest bit you can find and go at the slowest RPM on your drill. Take your time to drill the holes. Start from the bottom and drill towards the top (unless you have 2 layers like my hood where you need one hole in the fiberglass structure and another in the carbon fiber one. You can use paint or ink or something to put on top of your hood pin bolt, place the hood on top of it and now you'll know where to drill.

This is where I drilled mine:

The bar with the hole that the pin goes into is flat and not round.. how did you drill a hole for that.. did you just drill one really big hole?

I'm guessing this question is for me since we are talking about the sparco pins. Well, i have no idea. I bought the hood with the pins from a friend of mine so the drilling was already done. :)

Who you talking to? Are you talking about the big hole at the bottom of my hood?

I think so.. Do you just drill one big hole and three tiny holes? or do you drill a smalle hole for the bar to go through and the 3 small holes? in other words.. how do you get the bar that is screwed underneath the hood to come through the hood...
