Another reason why you should have hood pins! [Merged 7-7] hood pins

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Most people who don't want to put in hood pins don't because they don't want to drill into the CF or whatever, Personally, I think if you're dishing out the cash on the hood (for a good one around 400-500) you can also spend the extra 20-50 for the pins. Not just to protect your hood and windshield, but also to protect your own ass and everyone else driving around.

If it's cleanliness you are concerned about, drop some coin on the new aerocatch pins.

Here's a link to one of the many places that sells them. I didn't get them for mine obviously, but only because I was more concerned with function over form, and didn't want to spend the extra $75 to make them look more pretty.

Its ok if you keep your original latch. The owner before me lived on a highway and jumped on one day forgetting to latch his hood pins. The hood fliped opened shattered the windshield. The roof got messed up almost like it ripped off its henges and dented the roof. What an IDIOT

It doesn't happen just on the highway. I know a guy who had his CF hood fly up at 35mph without hood pins.

Still no sign of Dzus fasteners. Pity.

The only problem with DZUS fasteners is that they require you to create a place for the base of the fastener. Without a bit of fabricating you just can't use them and most people aren't familiar with them at all, but they are a good alternative

Rau (as well as many professional track cars) uses them to hold his body panels on.

They have the same basic function as a hood pin - to retain that given panel.

DZUS fasteners aren't as strong, so you would need more per panel. And installation can be more of a PITA, due to needing more mounting places and the fact that they are all grip range specific.

For a bolt-on hood, I would use two hood pins. For a lift-off hood, I would use four hood pins. And for any other removable body panel (on a race car), I would use the DZUS fasteners.

Well, what the heck. Hood pins need to be installed, too. Bit of strap steel, touch of welder, Dzus spring installed. Small difference.

The problem for most comes at the "touch of welder" portion though.

Has anybody ever considered of a "magnet" hoodpin? Two semi-powerfull magnets, along with the stock latch?

i just recently added a VIS OEM cf hood, and added the sparco hoodpins. to many stories of hoods flying up and cracking the window. i dont wanan have my 500 dollar investment go down the grade because of an extra 20 dollars

I'm still waiting for someone to do it right, and put the hinges at the front. Like sports cars are supposed to be.

I have Old school Celicas to look off of for that. If I can figure out how to do it without mangling it, I might go for the reverse hood... Assuming it's possible to do without it being called Rice ROFL

Wow, Im glad I stumbled across this thread, I'm in the mix of getting a carbon fiber hood and never thought about getting hood pins, figured the stock latch could hold it down just fine. Good to know.

That's the same hood I have on my car, and these pictures told me how important it was to run hood pins. It's no fun having a hood fly up on you (My CRX did just that). LOL my car is even the same color, no kit for me though HAHA

For those concerned about looks, and about aerodynamics, look into a product called Aerocatch.

could you find a magnet strong enough? or are you suggesting an electromagnet? Would that rob your alternator of current?

Interesting idea, but for the magnet to be strong enough to effectively keep the hood down under high speeds, I would imagine it would be quite difficult to manually lift up when you go to pop your hood.

so i got a question, i got sparco hood pins, i got the part about drilling the hole for the pin, im maily worried about the little screws that go in the top of the hood, how are people keeping those from backing out, i know they come with little metal things to screw into, but id think you wouldent want to screw them in, then unscrew them to make sure the metal clasp piece is secure. how are people drilling the top part of the pin that latches? say, as in the sparco pins.

what im referring to is the screw anchors, did you guys use them or not?

Took only one day out of the shop for this to happen. Can finally take pictures and tell everyone how important it is for you to have hood pins on your cf hood. My last hood I put them on and I finally decided to get a VIS evo hood. Put it on and I was on my way to A-Class body to get an estimate on the car. Drove a half hour away and my hood flew up. Was latch all the way down and it still decided to come up doing 50mph getting on the turnpike. Glass flew in my face and made small cuts on face. Luckly I had glasses on so I wasn't blinded, just couldn't see and it was about to rain. Made it all the way home (I know the risk). Just wanted to share my experience.

Anyone know what this bodykit is, or what it consists of. It looks great. Bravo to the owner.
