Street Build Resurrection of the Red 90 Talon

1990 Eagle Talon TSI trying to save her life from the previous owner and its alot of work but a nice base car. My youngest son, who also races this car has nicknamed her "The Red Baron".

I bet that is possible! :thumb: I'll need my videographer with me (my son).
Have a look. I don't know if I like it or I don't. I need to drive and see how good I can see over this thing I've had hidden for about 8 years

Ok, I BLT'd the car today and right at 21-22 lbs, the TB gasket started leaking on the firewall side. I am running a JMF Drag Manifold and had an issue there before but thought I had fixed it, obviously not. Anybody else have this issue??? :idontknow: Even tho it has this massive boost/vacuum leak, she still picks up and starts moving out FAST AS FK. I will pull the 1g TB and see what is going on with the sealing surface as soon as she cools down.
That's what's up today. So far so good but still knocking on wood. 🙏
Runs pretty dam good for having that boost leak. I can't wait to see what the 280R's do and how she pulls up top! The car has about 25 miles on it and the motor maybe 5 hours.
🤞

I never did but seems like most people find it's the throttle shaft seals that need to be replaced, even though it might look like the problem is with the sealing surface between TB and manifold.

Oh no, it is most definitely the mating surface seal. I've been thu shaft seals and this has nothing to do with them. When I "wiggle" part of the TB/Manifold gasket, it is most definitely the issue. Behind the throttle shaft between the 2 intake bolts. I might see if they happen to be loose but IDT so. We will find out though! :thumb:
Then it is back to being holy terror......
Back in 70's, we would take the throttle plates out of carbs and replace the shaft bushings so shaft seals are nothing new to me, although I am sure they are not thought about by the general crowd probably. Thanks for the suggestion anyway! Appreciate any help. 😊

Hey Marty, on my s90 I just lightly pasted some rtv on the gaskets and I’ve got no external leaks at all with 50psi tool pressure on a blt :thumb:

Also don’t forget to do your “vacuum pulls” LOL, I know you know, I was going wot on my engine on wastegate to like, 6500, then 7000, then 7500 and everything seemed to work out great LOL, forgive me I know you’ve “forgotten” more about engines than I’ll ever know LOL I just want this engine to live and kick a$$ and take names:hellyeah:

I started doing the same thing a while back. Little dab of the right stuff and everything seals to 50psi no problem. I even started putting a light layer on biss screw plug

I'd just be breaking even BUT, would have all of my car buddies around! :thumb:
And yes, plenty of motor engine breaking (not breakin) by letting the revs bring the car to a slower speed!

Alright, boost leak fixed PERMANENTLY. I made a sandwich plate, put a gasket on both sides, and that's all it needed. Boy those cams sound "rough" :)

It's been on the White board since we put it up. Good Eyes Solomon! ROFL

Just to be clear on the problem with the intake flange and the throttle body.
1g Throttle Body - 60mm
JMF Drag Manifold opening - 70mm
Hmmm :hmm:
The sandwich plate was just an adapter from 70 to 60mm.
Anyone running this setup will need this and they are EASY to fabricate.

Well I'm glad it's something that makes sense. I was wondering about it! Big waste of Wonder.
Oh maybe not. I vaguely remember about 30+ years ago, 2 guys got a Nobel prize for "Watching and Wondering". Or at least that's how they wrote it up in Science News mag. Which was on paper, and I've had trouble trying to find online archives of stuff that old. Bummer. It's almost like history started all over again with computers and internet.
Ok, reverie ended!

I took a short vacation so I am back home, ready to work on the car, only to find my pickup with a DEAD battery and won't charge, the I30 Infinity has a water pump leak that is A bi*** to change and the Talon needed some love, so I get to work on the Talon....I got passed the 21lb boost leak at the TB, fixed. Found the next one around 35ish. Blew the coupler off of the end of the turbo. GD that was LOUD (about 12ga shotgun loud)!
I called it quits for tonite and will reinstall the coupler tomorrow 🤞
I am ready to get a good log and see what all needs to be adjusted.
My ears are still ringing (worse than normal). ROFL
Marty

I took the car for a breakin drive and ended up passing 2 cars while logging. I've never seen these numbers before, BUT THEY ARE JUST NUMBERS.
I kept the rpms to only 7500 and boost to only 20psi.
The car felt STRONG, a bit jerky at lower rpms, but the cams are not little.
More to come!
Marty

And a short video of her......

Those numbers are so wrong. ROFL When I see more airflow, I will think more about it. It is flowing only 41lbs so it's around 410hp, by guessing,.at 20ish lbs of boost. I think my MBC line was leaking before this, allowing me to reach 34lbs. Now that that leak is fixed (I had to have my son listen for me as my hearing is getting worse), I think the MBC is working correctly now and I will crack her open the next drive, while logging, to see if she will give me more. Ultimately, I would like to max the compressor out on this setup, which is about 40 or so. I'd take more if the turbo will give it to me!

Darn the old hearing.
I check my hearing every so often with this online Tone Generator. (Yes that's my Link - Verified by me 😉 )
Right now I can hear pretty good up to 6,400 Hz. As I pull the slider to the right from there I lose it pretty quick and hear nothing by about 7,500 Hz. That's pretty bad, but my perceived loudness below 6,000 Hz is pretty even all the way down to about 30 Hz. So that's still good enough to appreciate music and voices and live acoustic instruments and good recordings. Below 30 Hz, my pretty good headphones don't do much down there. But low freqs aren't usually the problem anyway. That's where subwoofers are usually better than headphones.
This tone generator plays sine waves for you by default, and displays the frequency in Hz.
If you push the button that shows what musical note you are nearest to, it gives you a whole chart.
Be careful with this thing if you are wearing headphones. The default frequency of 440 Hz is a good place to set your volume. If you go to a frequency that you can barely hear and raise the volume there, be sure to lower the volume back down before you go back to a freq that you can hear better.

Oh one more thing - on that generator page, don't push the big button that says "Next" or "Start" or however they label it at the moment. That's some spam that takes you to something that somebody wants you to download. There is a link below it to remove the ad, and that works to remove the spam if you want to get rid of it. Anyway, you don't download anything to use this Tone Generator!! You use it just like it is already there on the page. The correct button to start the generator is "Play".

Huh, What??? ROFL
That dam coupler blowing off sure didn't help the hearing!
I'll test out what I can't hear, but how do we know what we can't hear if we can't hear it so is it hearsay......but I digress......
Dam, that almost sounded "political", shit.:ohdamn:

Marty, how was your last day at work? Fun?
Idk, I wasn't there ROFL
My doctor has had me off of work to the last 2 weeks because of my arthritis in my back. I had been working 6 days a week for 4 months and it was killing my spine.
I had a GREAT DAY FRIDAY. No work, drove the Red Talon for some breakin miles and forgot about it. I did go down and turn in my keys/badge and get my refrigerator and personal items from the wall like my 30 year service award plaque.

The weekend was tied up with picking up around the house for a family cookout yesterday with my son's and grandkids, my mom, my ex and her mom and a few other relatives and close friends so I was wore out from that. I have to limit my car time, when the back starts aching, I just quit and let the old back try to relax. It IS a weird feeling since I have worked for 44 years total, even when in college.
I recommend it for EVERYONE!!! 👍 😍
Thanks for REMEMBERING ME, that was really nice!!! No going away party, no "Thanks for all of your years of dedication", I'm just glad to call it quits.
Now, the scary part is, how much will Uncle Sam and Insurance have their hands in my pension? Will I have ANY extra $ to play "cars' with you guys??? I hope so, but my $ won't start coming in for 60 days so that is concerning. I have tried to save $ for bills for that period and my house and cars are all paid for, so I am crossing my fingers! 🤞
