I'm looking to convert my car to auto after breaking my 5 speed (again) and I'm trying to do this the easiest way because it's either buy a complete car that has everything in it and get it home to me just for the drivetrain parts, or buy the pieces individually. I'm just wondering if there's any other diff's that are compatible with a 2g auto transmission such as 1g's, 3000gt's, etc. so that I'm not having to look for an individual diff which I feel would be much harder to locate. Thanks!

Pretty sure 3kgt is an option, but I believe it requires a custom subframe to mount it. Maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong here.

Why not talk to @dacowgod or call Miller Import Parts and just buy a whole auto swap??
That's much easier, probably cheaper and you'll get all the parts you'll need.

Just run the stock LSD if you aren’t doing some ridiculous Red Demon build, many have taken it down in the single digits without problems.

I did my Awd and manual swap by gathering parts and not buying a parts car. I'll never do that again, buy a parts car and have it all there at your disposal.

I take it as he is asking if there are other options for a rear diff so I suggested running a stock LSD rear diff for an auto car, I wasn't talking about just the carrier.

I believe his underlying concern is the ratios being different.

Sealing carriers is an option, but the whole diff would be easier and better. Usually one of the vendors I mentioned has a couple full swaps available, if not individual parts. I'm also guessing he wants a 2g trans for lockup (and his car appears to be a 2g).

I'll agree a stock 2g auto diff is best, going for a different piece adds alot of cost into changing things. If you have wanna drag race like a baller, swap a ford 8.8 in. Better yet, do an IRS one from a mk8 or Cobra and hybrid axles, lil customizing the subframe (ok alot) and never worry about the rear diff again :D

ahh i misunderstood how you were meaning it. my bad. i do agree the simplest would be to use the stock diff. but as far as ease of conversion he could find any 1g/2g auto ring and pinion and swap the gears. the pns were all the same for the gears.

pretty much just need to swap in a 3.31 ring and pinion from any auto dsm, and I think and evo 4+ ring and pinion would work too.

Otherwise if you don't want to setup a ring/pinion you'll just need to find a complete 2g auto rear diff, and axles if its not the same (lsd/nonlsd) as what you have. Nothing else bolts in. I wouldn't bother with 3/s parts unless your trying to go 7's.

So just to be clear, I can pull the guts out of a 1g auto diff housing and throw into my 2g housing? If so, this will resolve my issues. Thanks.

Lol. Nothing I WANT to do. But it's either this or keep pulling my transmission. And being that I hate doing that more than anything else on this car, I'll just swap to auto and be done....with a ratchet shifter.

This is what I'm looking at, except I'd wanna take off that cover when installing and rig up a shift boot to cover it. I don't need a gear indicator being that it's really easy to know what gear you're in. Lol.

Try and make the boot look something close to this.

Look into the B&M ratchet shifters as well. Certain models are lower profile and have a screw-on shift knob so you can easily make it look 5-spd still. Friend of mine in TN did that to both his 1Gs and it looked immaculate. SUPER fun to drive too, my God.

Also, it can be trickier than you might realize to know what actual gear you're in. They can be tricky SOB's to get into park or know if you're in 4th or 1st. A gear indicator from ForcedFour goes a long way.

Just buy a ppg and a reasonable clutch. I have less than $5k in mine brand new, but you gotta be willing to do the work. By the time you get the auto parts rounded and play musical convertors a few times you won't be much farther ahead.
