Hey everyone. Have a question and a few concerns. 98 AWD talon auto was driven with wrong size tires on rear (after strict instruction not to be driven). Problem is the rear end went up in flames. Now I'm in the process of either fixing it or selling it. My question is Will any rear diff from a 95-98 automatic fit or only specific years? also what else could have been ruined from driving the car with different size tires? Anything to worry about tranny wise? Thanks for any information

Did it litterally go up in flames? How where the tires installed. Was it a missmatched sized just on the rear tires, or was it also missmatched from the front, and rear tires?

Yeah it literally went up in flames. luckily they caught it in time. larger tires on the rear then on the front:notgood:

95-99 Talon/Eclipse rear from an Automatic will work just fine. The only other thing that usually gets damaged from using wrong tire size, etc is the viscious coupling. I would install a new rear end (Just need a center section) and then see how it does. If the car acts like the tranny is slipping until you get to upper gears, suspect a burned VC.

Some friends did some research for me. Apparently there are 3 different gear ratios for the automatic rear diffs...... Do I need to find the exact ratio or will either of them work? There are no markings on the current diff in the talon:\ Any chance someone has a spare diff? Call me stingy but 1300 for a new diff is more then I want to pay if I dont have to.

From what I have seen and read, the auto only had 1 rear ratio and the 5 spd had 1 ratio. To the best of my knowledge, there was never a change amongst them. Regardless, you need the same gear ratio that your car was equipped with unless you change tranny to mathch the rear.

Yhe other parts that could have been dameged are the vicious coupler(already stated) and the center diff. I would check and repair/replace as needed before driving the car again.

I double checked the ratios using my factory Mitsu manuals. 95-99 all used the same ratio for AT (3.307) and for MT (3.54). The T-case ratio did change after 97 due to some internal tranny ratio changes, but the rear diff stayed the same. You should be just fine with any 95+ rear end as long as it's AT. If there is no tag on the rear you are looking at, remove the rear cover and count the teeth on both the pinion and ring gears. Divide the ring gear (large gear) tooth count by the pinion tooth count and you'll have your ratio. And all rears are LSD (except GVR4, Galant GSX and Summit/Expo/Colt AWD). At least according to the shop manuals.

Thanks for clearing it up. I'm pretty sure my friends got the information from Mitsbushi/chrysler dealership nearby. Not really surprised the dealership doesnt know what their talking about.
