I am highly considering making my lightweight 68 impala, to be powered by a compound 4g63.

This has been a thought for a while but now I'm about to pull the trigger.
My only concerne is if the engine will have enough torque. As it will become a high hp DD.

Whats the curb weight on that big boy? Compound charging will def help your torque curve, drastically.

Id say for sure milk as many CC's as you can out of it. Go with the 2.3 or 2.4. Thats obviously going to net you more torque. But damn, thats a big car. Even "lightened" is it going to be under 4k lbs?

It won't be that bad. Those thing were like 4200lbs with a big block. Bigblock is like 900lbs. What's a 4G weigh?

What's a GVR4 weigh?

Take a guess how muck power a inline six that could have been in that car would have? bout 90hp.

That would be cool but it called a xt

i forgot the apostrophe LOL

Those cars were powered by a v8 for a reason, they have torque. I feel like just to race a GSR swapped civic from light to light would be a challenge. Power to weight ratio says youll ruin things before you could make it go fast.

If your worried about torque, why not put a 2.3 or 2.4 in it? A 4g64 with 9:1 compression would pull that thing along pretty well, and still be pump gas friendly.

Ill go one better than Ray^,
screw the 4g63 AND the complications of TT'ing a v8 and just go with a supercharger. Simple. My neighbor has a few 'rods with anywhere from 350 to iirc a near 500ci engine.
Let me tell you: A supercharged, fully built 383 puts a 4g to shame. BUUUT, hes running near 700whp on a car that weighs no more than 2100lbs. You have to factor that in. But his setup is just dirt simple compared to the complexity we face with tuning. It really is, i was surprised by it.

I think its a neat idea you have but thats a cool car, Go with a supercharged and stroke v8 and enjoy how SIMPLE things are. Plus, youll be making more HP per $ thatn a 4g engine. My 3 cents

I still own the 327 that came in the car. Along with a 2 speed powerglide.

I do not want carb anything. I have been doing extensive research into TT sbc's.
The problem is i cannot buy individual parts that aren't ebay crap that won't last.
Wrenchrat and nelson racing have some really awsome parts but only as kits, and i want to piece the baby together how i choose.

Everyone says the impalas are heavy cars... you remove the engine and thats 610lbs right their. It wasn't easy but I've picked my 4g63 engine up by myself to load into a truck, so it couldn't have been more than 270lbs entire engine. so I'd save 340lbs on engine weight. which would make only a 295lb difference between the two cars. They also make fiberglass everything for this car, hood, fenders doors, etc.

The amount of room under the hood would be great and easy to work with, it would stay auto RWD and possibly get a really short geared 700r4 transmission with a high OD for interstate usage.

My position is: I have a GSX that has everything I need. wireing ecu ecmlink. Fully built 9:5:1 compression, All I would need is a larger HX40 to compound my tdo620g, another external wastegate and a second fuel pump and larger injectors/along with meth injection. All fabrication would just take time.
Lightweight wheels and driveshaft, and buschur adapter plate. Possibly a billet converter to save on rotational mass.
That stuff aside I have a great gsx with a fubar'd awd AT. I'm at the point I want my 68 for looks, and the 4g63 CT, for power.
It seems to be a reasonable feat. And man I've been kicking it around for over a year.. I could care less about keeping an old car original, it's just not me.

This may become a failure, or it could possibly be one of those that everyone remembers that went down in the books.
I'm ready for either fate and won't be satisfied until I find out.

Thanks for the link, this is my model, 3,904 lbs 1968 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe 327 V-8 Turbo-Fire 275-hp Powerglide

98 gsx hatch 3,269lb with stock 210hp.LOL So the wieghts might not be so far off in the end.

Do it i love this stuff

Do it and take lots of pictures.

Hell yes, do it and make a good write up with lots of pics! :hellyeah: I want to do this one day, but honestly i'd use a 2JZ....but obviously you already have the 4G63 and that would still be a pretty cool setup, again I say do it.

If nothing else it will be pretty awesome to do a burnout next to some big mouth mustang owner and have them all confused about wtf is going on under the hood. :thumb:

Hell it'd be nice regardless. Don't forget about the crusty nasty looking mustangs that came with the turbo 4 banger in it, those things can be reeeally quick. If you can get that heavy car on a diet then I say go with a 2.4L 4G63 with a compound setup if you're just stuck on making it have a 4g63 for its heart. It should pull it along fairly easily.

How much do you figure the 4g63 with a compound setup would run compared to the weight of a v8? I never kept up with weights of motors, but I do know the 360 in my Dakota is a heavy bastards for sure. You could always do a LS1 with a STS turbo setup in that car and it'd be pretty badass and it should get decent MPG to boot.

Although I love the 4G63, Its really tuff to compete with displacement.

Nelson Racing Engines - Twin Turbo Big Block Chevy = Win

Now try and purchase a part.
You can't. Call that number and purchase a part.
You can't. I've tried many different times. They are beutiful I agree completely.
But I'm stuck in a position where i have to make a choice, go ebay junk on my 327,or swap the fully built 4g63.

I am going to wait until after winter around Feb 1st to start my endevor.
