OEM GSX Shift Knob?

Just to add a comment to this thread ….
According to CAPS, the correct OEM part number for a leather wrapped shifter knob for my ’97 Spyder GST (OEM Leather Equipped) is MB962959. According to "Mitsubishi Parts" | Online Parts & Accessories Catalog the price for this part is $51.83.

When I did a Google search on OEM part number MR263906, it brought back this link: http://www.mitsubishi-motors.ro/files/accesorii/Catalog_Accesorii_Galant.pdf If you scroll down to page 4, you’ll see that MR263906 is a Galant option for a leather wrapped shifter knob. The price for this at "Mitsubishi Parts" | Online Parts & Accessories Catalog is $14.61

To me it appears they’re identical units? I’ll be definitely ordering a MR263906. When it comes, I’ll post a picture of my current (11 year old) beat up knob vs the Galant knob (MR263906)

Side note ;)

There are 4-5 black leather shift knobs listed for the 2g GST's (& the same amount for Grey), one being MB962959. This is the "expensive" knob, listed for ~$52 US. This is the one thats listed for my car as well as the 95-97 GSX's. The other knob MR263906, is the "heavy weight" knob, which as far as I can tell is the exact same, except for the extra weight. This is the knob thats listed for the 98-99 GSX's & goes for ~$15 US.

Ok Guys,

As promised, below are some pics of the shifter that came with my '97 Spyder GST from day one vs. the weighted MR263906 that everyone is buying (price of $14.61 @ "Mitsubishi Parts" | Online Parts & Accessories Catalog

Things to note:
1) MR263906 is taller than my factory supplied shifter (1/2" taller)
2) MR263906 does weigh quite a bit more - check out plastic vs. steel shot to see why
3) MR263906 does NOT screw on to my B&M short shifter too well. The threads do line up, but when it gets down to tightening the shifter all the way, it stops not where you want it to rest. I added some Teflon tape to the threads and it got it pretty close and then with a monkey wrench added a little more force to make it line up. Since the factory one has a plastic inside, it makes adding threads (to tighten where desired) extremely easy

Hope this helps

I really wished that the weighed knob was short like the original factory GST knob.

If you want any more angles of the new one or the stock leather one (I believe my bro still has it), let me know.

Ok guys, this will clear up everything ....
My factory supplied shifter is indeed shorter than MR263906 (Galant?) - see my previous photos posted. I reinstalled the OEM knob and took some photos. I then installed MR263906 (Galant?) and took more shots. When installed they both appear to be approx. 7" high. Reason being is that the MR263906 (Galant?) pushed the shifter boot farther down the shifter shaft. The photos below should explain everything.

The metal one really doesn't "feel" tall. It feels natural and shifts great.

When I mentioned not "feeling" the knob I mean that I didn't like it. My stock knob doesn't leave a gap between the boot at all. I might still give it a try though because God knows Im not spending $55 on an OEM knob.... might as well get a GReddy counterweight if I'm gonna spend that much money even with the negative comments I've read about them....

Geez, I can't believe the factory shift knob costs so much.

I knew what you meant. What I meant to say is that the heavy knob doesn't seem like it sticks up higher than the factory one. Peepers just confirmed that they sit about the same height even though the heavy one is taller because the threads go up higher in the heavy one.

Peepers:

We had the same problem with the shift knob on a B&M shifter. We experimented with a bunch of different washers and finally found the right combination of 2 of them to use. We put the washers down on the shifter then threaded the knob on and it stopped threading when it was straight because it dug into the metal in the knob. This might have pushed the shift knob up a tiny bit but hardly noticeable. I thought of teflon or electrical tape like you did, but I thought the washers would be a better solution for repeated removal/installation of the knob. I installed/removed the knob several times in a row and the washers did not shift - the knob came to rest in the forward position every time.

Any of you guys think about getting the stock EVO VIII leather shift knob? Thats the one I have and I absolutely love it. Its small and screws nice & low on the shifter. Honestly, I love how its shaped. Its like a little baseball.. feels awesome.

pic right after I installed it along with my genuine B&M short shifter..

Think of it this way.. You want to feel leather in the hot sun, or chrome? Which will burn your hand more? Or on cold days..

I hated my greddy for cold or very hot weather.

How about using a nut?

I got a small question. Do those 2g B&M's shorten the side to side throw too, not just front to back?

Yes! I have one too and love it. I've had mine for quite a while now, but I can't seem to find any pics.

Can you elaborate on the whole washer idea? What inner diameter? you placed them so they stay at the tip (where the threads are) of the shifter so the knob will thread better? Or what was the point of that?

Also, are there really issues with the weighted knob threads being the same thread pitch of the shifter? (I have a B&M BTW)

Thanks.

We got washers that sat a bit below the threaded part to act as a stop when the knob was threaded on. This helped to get the knob tight and able to line up properly. As for an ID of the washers, we just went fishing in our bolt bucket to find two that allowed us to do what I mentioned. I removed the washers (this was done on my car) and the knob sat fine, but my brother thinks it was hanging on the shift boot plastic ring. Now it doesn't line up properly anymore so we have to come up with another solution.

I have an authentic B&M and the threading is the same. I can't speak for the knock offs though.

I see where you're coming now.

Well Ill see what I can come up with once I get mine. I'll post with some feedback.

Thanks

i rock the evo shift knob too. the ring on my old boot was cracked, but i used some electrical tape underneath around the shifter to hold it up... worked great ant the knob look nice....

I know this thread is old but I have been referencing it for the past week or so trying to get a new shift knob. I ordered one of the ones stated on the first page (the weighted one for $18 or so) and hated it. It is taller and looks stupider than my OEM one. Apparently those knobs were on the 1999 models. I have done some research and found that the part number for the one that came with all 1995-1998 GSX's with gray leather interior is MR166531. They sell for $70. That part number is specifically for the gray knob. And obviously in a 5-speed pattern. They also come in black. I don't know that part number because my car has gray interior. If you email [email protected] they will be able to tell you any part number you need based on your vehicles VIN #. This is pretty convenient for interior parts because a lot of them are slightly different based on the year and colors of your car. JNZ Tuning also has as good of prices as any other online OEM sellers. Hope this helps someone in the future so they don't make the mistake I did.

I'm not a fan of (no offense) novelty shift knobs. I'll stick with OEM.
On a side note, my 97 GST has the leather option, but has a rubber steering wheel and shift knob.

Rockin the 2g leather, just feels good to me. But i was thinking about getting one of those GReddy diamond ones Part #: 14520502 anyone hear anything good?
And (off topic) does anyone know where Zmann42087 got the seats in the second picture the look good.

The one that is supposed to be taller is overall universal then?
I'm running the typical 2g shift knob in my 1g, and am really tired of hitting my knuckles inside the boot and would like something taller but I don't want the big banana-dildo stock 1g shifter.

So if i am looking for a oem 2g short shift knob without gap but still heavy. Which one am I going for? Thanks
