Toronto,
I was wondering if anyone on here is useing one of these batteries?

I am looking at the PC680.

http://www.odysseyfactory.com/specs.htm

My main question is if I will need the Metal Jacket. They say it is for high heat applications. Does under the hood classify as high heat?

Also how is the battery for a street car? If you leave your lights on does it go dead really fast?

Thanks

Adam

Personally, I don't have one-yet, but there are many guys on the csm forum(4g61t.org) that use them without any problem, and many have performed a 4g63 swap so I know it will crank your car over. I would think that under hood would be considered high heat.

Well, this is one of the battery that we use in our evo kits. Now, under the hood of the evo is probably not as hot as a dsm because of the vent but, I would not see why you would need a shield. It would also depend on what you plan on doing with the car, if it's a street car than I would say that it would not be needed but, if you road race or something like that than yes, it may warrant this. If you are concerned though and do not get a shield I would say just get a battery relocation kit and put a regular size battery in the trunk. This is what I did on my 95 gsx and it is simple and cleans the engine bay up quite a bit. But if you have a stereo back there I guess you would be limited on your options.

nope...i'm not using a shield. a couple of other 10 sec. 2Gs aren't either. i'm daliy driven, so are the rest.

Also you can go to: www.gotbatteries.com and look at a Genesis Battery. A whole lot smaller, than the oddyssey and works great for me.

Thanks again guys for the help.

I think I will go with the regular Odyssey battery as it is a lot more for the metal jacket version and if I don't need it then I can find other places to put that money.

I looked at the Genesis version and it appears to be almost the same battery but I can't find someone up here local to purchase it from.

"v2ner" How well does the battery work? Does it easily drain fast?

no, it doesn't drain fast. i've had mine for a year and a half now. i drove it last winter with the heat on, stereo on, and rear defrost on. either my alternator's indestructable or it's got to be the battery. i'm storing it this winter though. good luck :thumb:

I've got the Odyssey with no metal jacket. What I did was mount it in the stock location and then made a simple aluminum sheet metal shield for it. Its been an awesome battery for the few months I've had it, but my car is race setup. I have noticed on really cold mornings that it has a harder time cranking over, but it does it.

I got one, relocated in the rear. It works just fine for me. I remember looking at the metal jacket option and how they recommend it for under the hood applications. I would personally just play it safe and buy it.

Out of curiosity, have any of you guys or gals heard of, or tried using a Braille Battery?

Braille Batteries are 11.5lbs with 360CCA's. They can be mounted however you choose and use top or side post design. :thumb:

The price on the pc680 is off.

And here is a couple comparison pics of the stock sized battery and the pc680:

That Braille Battery looks pretty good. A little lighter and a bit better cranking amps. But it is a lot more coin.

Does anyone know if you need a special recharger for these Dry Cell batteries? Or will a regular automotive battery charger work?

You are correct about the price, that comparison chart must not be current. OMG

Yup, a Braille can be charged with any 12v charger or be jumped etc like any normal car battery.

Will all of these batteries work with the automotive alternator? I know the Odyssey does but how about the others?

The NRG is 280CCA and the posts are $15 extra. The size and weight sound good though :thumb:

kicker91laser, yes these all can and will work with conventional automotive alternators.

I currently run a Hawker Energy PC 925 with a metal jacket, and this is my second battery in two years. The PC 925 does not like starting or sitting for a couple of days in cold weather. Despite living in Canada, it rarely gets below freezing here. I would think that this battery would not be suitable for people who just use their cars on the weekend and see temperatures below freezing.

I keep a charger on the battery when I don't use it for a couple of days to gaurantee that I can start it. Because of my Magnus SMIM, there is no way I can use a stock sized battery.
