My wife has a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado ( Yes I realize the first problem LOL ) anyway we seem to be having issues with the transmission. It does not seem to want to shift into 2nd gear (Auto) and for a time we could turn jeep off let sit and restart and it would correct. Now this no longer works.

I can high ref and push it to 33 mph and will shift into 3rd and be fine from there.

I am gonna take it to AAAMCO and have them test it but figured it try here as well .

How does it downshift? Does it skip 2nd or can you slow to a roll and get it into 2nd? Can you manually shift 1-2-3? No codes?

It sounds like it could be a sticking ball in the valve body. Check some Jeep forums and see if anyone there is having the same problem and what they're doing.

I will skip 2nd... I tried to go from first gear to 2nd and it will act like nothing happens

You can take it to a shop and have them plug in and try to manually shift to 2nd using a diagnostic tool. If nothing happens it will probably be your 2nd gear solenoid which would need to be replaced. If it clicks over and says it's engaged then it is most likely a stuck ball or clogged tube in your valve body. May be able to fix this with a trans flush, not just draining and refilling but running a full flush with a trans flush machine. This runs fluid through valve body, clutches and torque converter.

On older GM's (like early '90's and earlier) we used to avoid messing with the valve body at all for problems like this. You could have a perfectly running / shifting 25 year old truck, then you flush the trans and now you don't have 2 gears because you moved some dirt into the valve body; PITA!

Anyway, hope this helps. Let me know what you find out.

Thank you yes gives me some insight.

Tomorrow I am going to buy my 2 replacement cv axles and get my car buttoned up so i can get her jeep in .
